Just wondering where people worked as their first job after their HSC
I currently finished my HSC, got amazing results, but the last month has been such a pain finding work
It’s completely my fault coz I should’ve started applying before the exams, but just wondering how people got their jobs in this period.

BTW now that my HSC is finished, u will see me heaps at Tigers home games !

I know the feeling. Finished my HSC a few years back, couldn’t find a job to save my life, mainly because I never worked during school so being 18 years old with no experience made it very difficult to find a place that wanted me. Eventually a family friend offered me a temporary job for a month or so as he was short staffed for that period (a few of the women were having children), but while I was there, a few others resigned so I’m still there now. Ironically, after I started at this job I got callbacks to 2 of the ones I applied for previously. So it’s not impossible

Had a few friends in the same position, all of which have found jobs now, you just got to stick with it and you’ll find something. However a lot of them got a job through people they knew.

i worked at pizza hut for 2 weeks last year, and work in my family business for over 2 years.
for some reason, i’ve gotten so many rejections but no one ever tells me why i got rejected and other people did :S
hopefully, this doesnt happen when i finish uni and look for a real job… 😦

My first job after school (SC not HSC) was at Pink Panther Printing as a Despatch Controller, which is now defunct afaik. Working for pittance as i was only 16…think it was only something like $4.50 an hour!!

Best advice my grandfather ever gave me was this…once you’ve got a job…and if you decide it’s not for you anymore make sure you have a new job to go before you move on.
Now i wish i’d paid more attention to him as i’ve been unemployed for over 18 months now and am finding it impossible to find anyone to employ me.

I worked in the Pizza Hut call centre while starting Uni.

I was let go about 4 months in as they monitor random calls and thought it was rude to presume someone wanted a BBQ Meatlovers pizza because they pronounce three as free. In my experience this was the case so I saw nothing wrong with it

Having finished school twice I have 2 first out of school jobs. When I knew all there was to know about the world and life I left school at 15 to persue a Traineeship at the Waterworks at Lithgow.
After returning to school in 2010 to do 11 and 12. Just after finishing i’ve jagged a job at the Bottleshop in Blackheath, which will do until Uni rolls around next year, or is steady enough if i decide to defer. I’m going to be a high school teacher in the humanities departmend
HSC Results were awesome too Tig Prmz, glad to hear you went well too mate.

My first job while at school was as a paperboy. Didn’t mind it, good exercise but hated riding into headwinds uphill during winter.

I worked at K-Mart during uni before landing my first serious job with Computer Sciences Corporation when I finished.

It was a struggle for me when I finished in 07, unfortunately for me I started school when I was a week before turning 6, and so I finished my HSC only a couple of months before I was 19. So straight away I was at a disadvantage age-wise to some other kids who were still 17. It didnt help that I didnt work while at school so I decided to do a Diploma in Business Management at Tafe. I thought that would help me out but as it turned out it prevented me from doing traineeships when I finished.

My first job ended up being an apprentice chef based on my work experience at school and gaining a cert 2 in Hospitality from school, it didnt work out and now I work part time as a shift manager at Maccas and also with my old man who is a builder/painter. I’m still hoping I can get a full time role in business admin though.

after completing year 10, in 1980, I left school.
first job I eventually got was being an apprentice auto electrician, in falcon st, crows nest.
started there in early Jan, 1981.
worked 44 hours a week, got pad $88 for it.

turned out to be a great opportunity.
met some very good people, who opended doors for me to be involved in motorsport, as long as I was prepared to put in effort.
this experience gave me a great grounding for my current job.
                          trainee radio tech…

I didn’t think my results were good enough for Uni so I got a job with my next door neighbor in a ventilation manufacturing joint. I was in charge of the plasma cutter. It was boring dirty work that cut my hands to pieces.

One day I decided to check my mail, saw I had a Uni offer so I took it. I only lasted a month. It was the pits,

I did six months of Uni and then got a carpentry apprenticeship for a company that puts glass in to ugh rise buildings…

What ATAR did you get?? I was srsly expecting 94ish, but I ended up getting just over 99… I was sooo over the moon!

Many people here seem to suggest most of these jobs they got were due to connections 😦 I guess I’ll just wait and see if anyone calls back. Feels like a big step going into a world with men LMAO =]

Guys 1 piece of advice Don’t set your sights to high A job is a job and an employer is more likely to hire someone who has a job over someone who does not

Even if it means getting a job at Woolies ,KFC ,Maccas etc It is a start

Exactly right Happy, there’s a big difference between experience and skills/qualifications, I learn’t that the hard way! Its all about taking little steps up and and not only that, there will be the odd little step back too, but its how people bounce back.
