Re those changing smoking laws. The Byron Ex Services club did a reno job every change of the law - never once did they let the smokers down.
Yep,every viable Club adapted to the OHS/RBT/Pokies/Smoking etc laws, our Club has been poorly run for Decades with lots of rumours of Staff with fingers in the till and this was Decades after Humpreys.
It already been mentioned the challenges the Club had with the changing demographic in the Balmain/Leichhardt area but the Club was sitting on Millions of Dollars of land and had met the criteria for entry into the NRL and yet put their handout for the ‘fools gold’ to merge with Wests’s.
I remember a Newsletter a few years back where they said they would be paying ‘market value’ rent on the new premises when they were eventually built, anybody that has a IQ over Moron would know they couldn’t service their Debt and run the Leagues Club profitably if they paid full rent on the premises.
Patronage at the Leagues Club had dropped off since the 1980’s as mentioned in a previous post but it was still ticking over.
Anyway sad Day,only hope now is the Administrators comes to a deal with a White Knight which is unlikely now we have given away all our assets.
I feel sorry for all the hard work and sacrifice by the Members in the 1950/60’s to get the Leagues Club up and running only to see it thrown away by decisions made on the basis of poor advice from people that only had $ signs in their eyes.
He’s going Ok but not having the impact he had early in the Season,he and Matulino were probably the 2 best Forwards in the Comp. for the first 6 or so games.
That’s to be expected when they are targeted, like in the early games, and getting smashed every game.
Hope Matutlino,in particular, can manage his injuries for the run into the Finals,if he does we might make the 8.
He will get plenty of rest when grub is good to go
Yeah, but how much more can Reynolds battered body stand,i can’t see him lasting another 3 Seasons.
Benji is going Ok but needs Brooks to be more consistent and attract attention away from his(Benji) plays.
Too many poor decisions, and especially grubber kicks, by Brooks in the Newcastle game.
I’m gonna buck trend and say I wasn’t completely convinced with Benji last weekend. Definitely more controlled than Brooks, but also less of an attacking threat than Brooks.
FWIW i agree,if you look back at Benji’s time with us from around 2008/9 forward he always starts the season well, the accolades are rolled out,he’s on all the Footy Shows etc. but his form slowly drops off as the season progresses for what ever reason. His time with Potter is a good eg. of this,he had the attitude/ego all he had do was run on the field.
Anyway different Benji this time around with the ego under control and i hope he has a great season and his current form is not just a ‘dead cat bounce’ as his career winds down.
Right from the start this whole things was never planned well , The Tigers probably should have sold it to Harry ( Meriton ). The guy seems to get things done , you only need to drive around and Meriton are everywhere , Poor Decisions , people out of their Depth and Stupid Councils and Action Groups have all help Dig the whole this old club will be buried in , How would people like Keith Barnes feel about this and many others who played for the club or used the club as a meeting place for a feed and a drink , specially the older folks who do meet at these types of venues for a cheaper Feed and get together , real Shame
Yeah, absolute tragedy,i agree with all of the above, there are several ‘Directors’(who couldn’t be trusted to put out garbage bins’) and a couple of ex-Balmain players that should be ashamed of themselves.
There were members at the time that predicted all this folly, once the Club gave up ownership we were gone,it was just a matter of when, where and to what extent.
I also feel extremely sorry for the post WW11 members that fought and scaped to get the Leagues Club up and running,in a prime location,in the first place.
He was going great last year until injury hampered his form, if he is fit he will be a good signing.
Yeah ,great player if fit ,Souths sure missed him.
Still a gamble thou.,like Ballin & Reynolds there is a question mark on him surviving a tough season but time will tell.
Most online bookies have us Fav. for the spoon so some tempting odds out there for the Tiges to make the 8.
Love the ‘Óils’ but saw them live at the Northern(Great Northern?) Hotel in Byron back in the 1980’s and they were terrible. We drove down from the Gold Coast for the night and it was a shocker of an evening, they performed in that big barn like room the Hotel had back then,Garrett was pissed or doped or both and the packed crowd were yahooing and carrying on where you couldn’t hear properly.
That was the first time the four of us had seen them live and we were just shaking our heads that a top flight Oz Band could perform like that.
Marshall was offered a contract by Brisbane for next year but decided to get in contact with Cleary to ask if the Tigers could offer him a deal.
I’m not sure that bit about the Bronco’s contract is 100% true but good to see him end his career here.
I think the Union experience was a good one for him as far as his character goes, hurts at the time to have your ego bruised and come to the realisation your not as slick/good as you once were and it was also good to see him having a go in the Bronco’s Reserves.
He will be a much better person this time around, not the egotistical Prima-Donna that left us.
A guy walked into the local welfare office to pick up his check.
He marched straight up to the counter and said, "Hi. You know…, I just
HATE drawing welfare. I’d really rather have a job."
The social worker behind the counter said, "Your timing is excellent. We
just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a Chauffeur
and bodyguard for his beautiful daughter. You’ll have to drive around in
his 2017 Mercedes-Benz CL, and he will supply all of your clothes.
"Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You’ll also be expected
to escort the daughter on her overseas holiday trips.
This is rather awkward to say but you will also have as part of your job assignment to
satisfy her sexual urges as the daughter is in her mid-20’s and has a rather strong sex drive."
The guy, just plain wide-eyed, said, “You’re bullshi**tin’ me!”
The social worker said, “Yeah, well … You started it.”
The investigation has concluded with no charges laid - sounds like a huge cover-up. I understand that there was some kind of statute of limitations but seriously if a crime has been committed then any player involved ought to be punted (sorry, couldn’t resist)
The particular task force may end but the Info. they collected will be still active for years to come, may be used at a later date in a similar criminal investigations if they decide to target individual Crims. or players taking bribes or avoiding Tax.
