I think Tigers players and other clubs will still see us as soft even if they did give up some money. I like the addition of Joe O but I see losing JA as losing our second best forward (after Luciano) so I think this isn’t much of an improvement overall. People are getting a little overhyped about our signings. We’ve basically signed players unwanted at other clubs on small contracts. I like the signings but it’s silly to get hopes up about this season. Adding Joe O and keeping JA would have meant better depth and a stronger pack, I don’t think we’ve achieved that yet this season. Tamou is certainly an improvement on what we have, but he’s a year older and he might not have the commitment to play hard this year on his final contract. Overall, the clubs making good signings but we’re still too impatient to get rid of players or coaches as soon as they get a little upset. We’ve seen Melbourne, Eels, Penrith and even the Titans handle such demands with more conviction. It seems like every time a player or coach requests a release we talk tough and then release them within a week. I really think JA could have been productive for us this year, irrespective of what has been said.

The players at the other clubs didn’t burn their bridges like JA did.

But it only shows future players how they go about these sort of disputes if we let players go because of their public talk. Ignore his public comments and tell him he’s either playing for us or not getting paid. It’s simple and they’ve signed a bloody contract and just like we’re doing with Packer and Reynolds both parties have to honour that. It’s just really short-sighted and weak by us. This is the perfect year and the right sort of player to take a stand on. He’s an average footballer and we’re going to be an average team next year (if we’re lucky), you’re not disrupting anything by standing your ground on this one. And if it really doesn’t work out and we have a potential signing coming in then we can just release him when it suits us. But right now we’re making another team stronger and we’re looking like pushovers again, because we are.

The way to prevent that is the NRL changing the rules in this area, not us fielding a weaker squad to prove a point.

In saying that it appears we get $100k+ compensation for releasing him. That doesn’t paint us as weak.

Nrl are currently in discussions with Easts,Souths and Roosters rite now to determine whether contract enforcement was in their favor…and as theyre all stacked with imports we’ll leave the status quo excatly as it is

Great constructive reply.

… a sense of humor always welcome on Forum!Nothing we say aint gonna change too much

We had a chance here to stand up to these players, and instead we caved.

I genuinely don’t understand why people think this. The Tigers said they weren’t going to just release Aloiai without a replacement. Such a replacement became available, and they were able to use the cash they were going to spend on Aloiai to secure him.

Pick an option:
A) Stick Aloiai in reserves and don’t replace him on the first grade roster, to make a point that we won’t be pushed around.
B) Stick Aloiai in reserves and sign another prop, using money that could have been used to strengthen the squad elsewhere.
C) Decline to release Aloiai until a suitable replacement can be found, find one, sign him and then release Aloiai to free up cap space for said signing - thus making a like-for-like swap.

You’re totally welcome to believe Ofahengaue isn’t a good replacement for Aloiai. You might be right. But if the club thinks he is, using Aloiai’s money to get him is clearly the best outcome for the 2021 roster.

Joe O is not a replacement for Aloiai. There was plenty of room and funds for both. I don’t watch Broncos except for when we play them, so I don’t know much about our new player. I’m hoping for good things though.

Gaining Joe and losing Josh are two unrelated events.

The problem here is we said we would not release Josh A unless we received a financial advantage. That was a very public statement. And now WT have said we received a payment for Josh A (good to hear) but we’re not disclosing how much, WT just wants us to trust them. Maybe it was a high enough amount, and really if the figure was publicised, only WT are in a position to adequately judge whether the figure meets their criteria or not for it being a ‘good enough’ amount.

It is just very unfortunate that there was no deterrent for players stitching us up again. And a lot of us said this last time with Matterson. So who’s next? Nofa? Twal? Mikaele? Talau? Liddle? I’m guessing it’s more than one next time. Wonder how that will go down.

That is so true…were now a serial a soft touch whomever we improve who decides to bail mid contract…oh its ok…we’ll find someone else to replace you…go rite ahead.
And compensation…well,thats a secret
Not the way to run a business

Piss weak management… getting no players in return for the snake…

Aloiai’s salary is off the Tigers’ cap, and the space created has been used to sign Ofahengaue.

Do you think the Tigers should have restricted themselves to only the Manly Sea Eagles roster when it came to finding a replacement for Aloiai? Because the fact that Manly wanted to sign a prop suggests to me that they may not have that much available in the prop position.

I wish people could be more realistic about this sort of thing. Aloiai spat the dummy and acted unprofessionally, but the Tigers’ choices were (a) to just live with a roster spot taken by a guy who doesn’t want to play for them but they still have to pay, or (b) be creative to reassign that cap to a suitable replacement. By waiting until they have a replacement, the Tigers are “playing hardball” with Aloiai AND looking after their own interests.

“But why do clubs never release players to the Tigers early?” Well, perhaps it’s because a lot of the players we sign early are on development or minimum contracts and thus there’s no incentive to let them leave. If Parr and Penrith had to replace Utoikamanu and Laurie they’d only have minimum salary to do so - basically it would mean a kid or some guy off the street. The Tigers had the opportunity to use Aloiai’s money to sign a rep prop with freight being paid by his old club.

Time will tell if Aloiai or Ofahengaue is the better player, but it’s pretty clear that Ofa was a better option FOR THE TIGERS IN 2021. Any talk of getting tough or setting an example would be, clearly and undeniably, at the expense of the quality of the 2021 playing roster. That would be the stupid move, not arbitrarily demanding Manly “make it right” or taking petty, vindictive action against a player who clearly doesn’t want to be here.

We still have the $$ put aside for JAC cld have used this to buy JO/Robertts and still have plenty of change.Personally Im disappointed we cldnt keep JA for 2021…its one step forwards and one backwards
History now
Musgrave a key signing to lock up(whatever that means with WTs)…he looked our best when on the park

If thats true about Aloai,Im embarrased about yet another rollover
Genuinely gobsmacked we can roll over for a 3rd tim,e when most others dont.
We need new management…seriously

We need new players.

WE definitely do…but not giving up one of our best!!

He is a good prop, not worth $600k so will be gone in 12 months anyway.

Agree…but weve gotta learn to manage our cap both ways.If we get stuck with the Packers and Reynolds for their full term, then lets ensure our guys who weve invested in and improve get to play out their full contracted term too.It works both ways for other well run clubs
We are definitely NOT in that category
And the empty promises of mowing the lawns are just that
What sort of precedent does that …well…confirm…yet again

I don’t care about the precedent as it doesn’t fix this, if we didn’t have Packer and Reynolds then maybe we could afford to play hardball. That is not where we are though so we have to act in a way that improves our roster, playing Aloiai in reserves doesn’t fix our roster. Let him go and get someone else here, who is a part of our future, instead of wasting money on a weak minded individual.

Nothing "fixes"this…but its about preventing it from happeneing again…and again

There’s no doubt, WE’RE A SOFT TARGET. !
The MEDIA says we have to release Aloia so that’s what we’ll do.
We’ll probably send him over to Brookvale in a stretch limo and foot the bill, just to appease the pigs at News Corp.
I respect the Storm more for their hard edge demands for a quality replacement in the JAC negotiation. The very player they requested (and we protected) is now pee-ing us up against the walls of The Daily Telegraph building.

We are going to be compensated - have you forgotten that already. Just not with a player.

We aren’t getting compensated at this point. Compensation would require Manly giving us something in return for releasing Aloiai. The proposed deal now is that we just get Aloiai off our books and therefore we sign someone else.

We did the same thing with Matterson and it allowed us to sign AD and LL.

My opinion is that we should have kept Matterson and we should keep Aloiai. These guys were our best forwards and close to best players in their last season with us. It just seems stupid to release quality players because they spit the dummy.

We should be compensated but I think the writing is on the wall in that we sign JO and release JA.

But how do you know we weren’t compensated, they don’t have to tell us?

The Pom came on here and stated exactly what I’ve stated. We are just getting Aloiai off our books. The same thing happened with Matterson.

I could be wrong but there is no evidence at all that we are being compensated. The evidence that we have even though it’s poor evidence states that we get no compensation.

I don’t like it. I reckon it’s bad. In stating that I understand the club just wants to get a team together who wants to win and we don’t need players there who aren’t committed.

Yep the dummy spitters always just get their own way with us in the end.

Dummy spitters (Moses, Matterson, Aloiai) - whaa, whaa I don’t like it here, I want to go play over there, I’m not gonna talk to anyone unless I get my way, I want a bigger ice cream!

WT management (rhetoric) - you are a very naughty boy, you won’t get your own way, you are contracted to us and you will see out your contract, either by playing with us or sitting on the sidelines for a season, we will not be used as a doormat for disgruntled little boys anymore!

WT management (reality) - it’s ok little guy, daddy doesn’t mind, here’s a nice ice cream, now go over there and play with your new friends, as long as you are happy.

Actually, the way it ends is we’d better give you the bigger ice creamin case you throw a tantrum in front of the others and encourage them to duplicate yr behaviour.By giving you want you want, that will never happen…well, for a 4th time surely?
