@stevied - personally I hope we get AD, AJ and Gagai but there is no way that is happening. At the same time we have to be careful. We went hard when Ivan was here and it was a disaster.

I think AD on 500k is okay considering our position but not a long term contract. 500k for an established half in the comp is worth it. He isn’t established but he looks like he could fill that role.

As for your question - it’s all conjecture until it’s official.

You lock your good players up full stop. Before him Korobeite left and after JAC Papenhuyzen went. These are franchise players who bring the crowd and bucks into the club. Too late now…

That is a bit over the top. Neither of these guys are franchise players. I don’t even think those players exist in rugby league.

We still haven’t recovered from their losses. Disgraceful retention and the club deserves to wear the black eye and answer why Taylor and Potter were put in charge of coaching.

Losing those guys was nothing compared to losing Tedesco. We’ve also definitely recovered. We aren’t doing any worse since those guys left.

As much as I think AD would be great for us. At 500K, it sounds abit risky IMO. Who knows, maybe we need to take the risk for a possible reward. South’s cap management sounds very dodgy and I think they need to offload him to be at least half cap compliant. Like many have said, If souths pitch a bit of $$ (which I doubt) then definitely.

When you consider that (reportedly) McQueen is on 400k, Jennings 400k, Nofo 450k, Reynolds 800k, Packer 650k: Douehi at 500k sounds good value.

We have a ton of money to spend and he’s the kind of player that will make us a better team without question. And he can slot into the 6 once Benji retires. Would be an astute signing imo.

For us it’s potentially a good signing. For Souths it can’t be working. The problem is all these figures are just plucked out of the air.

The Sydney Morning Herald

By Christian Nicolussi
January 15, 2020 — 7.06pm
Adam Doueihi is weighing up his immediate future after South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett told him he is free to chase a starting fullback position elsewhere after making it clear Latrell Mitchell will get first crack at the club’s No.1 jersey.

Bennett admires Doueihi and is happy for him to see out the remaining two years of his deal, but also informed him on Wednesday he would not block any early release from Redfern.

Only two days earlier Bennett said he faced some “hard decisions” about how to squeeze the likes of Doueuhi into a back line that now features Mitchell, Campbell Graham, Braidon Burns, Dane Gagai and James Roberts.

Doueihi was given his NRL debut by Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire and is a Balmain junior. The Tigers also need a starting fullback and have well north of $600,000 still in their salary cap for this season, but have so far baulked at Doueihi’s price tag, given his current deal is heavily back-ended.

The Herald understands Doueihi stands to collect about $500,000 this year and even more in 2021. Souths do not have to move on any players to be salary cap compliant and it remains to be seen if they will pick up any of Doueihi’s tab should he leave.

Adam Doueihi could be the man to make way after Latrell Mitchell’s arrival at South Sydney.

Tigers boss Justin Pascoe told the Herald on Tuesday: “Having cap space at this time of year allows us the opportunity to be strategic and leverage off other clubs who might have challenges with their ca space.”

Bennett took one look at Mitchell train on Tuesday and was clearly convinced his star recruit would more than make the successful transition to fullback in just eight weeks.

Doueihi was initially told by Bennett he would be playing five-eighth, only for Cody Walker to sign a two-year extension in December. He was then informed by the supercoach he would be the starting fullback, only for Souths to the sign Mitchell.

“Some of the boys here have played some great football for us, but the end result is we couldn’t walk past the opportunity to take Latrell,” Bennett said on Monday. “This club is about success. We want to have the best team we possibly can here and we believe he [Mitchell] is going to add to what we already have.”

New recruit Latrell Mitchell shakes hands with Souths coach Wayne Bennett on Monday.

Doueihi’s best hope is securing a utility role off the bench, which he could easily do given his ability to play anywhere in the back line. A tall playmaker who impressed at fullback towards the end of last season, Doueihi would even start a few games during the Origin period with Dane Gagai a Queensland regular and Cody Walker and Mitchell a chance to earn a NSW Blues recall.

Such is the depth in the outside backs at Souths that it was easy to forget Bryson Goodwin had also returned to the club on a one-year deal.

Before he made his NRL debut under Maguire at Souths in 2018, Doueihi spoke glowingly about the coach and said: “Madge was pretty keen on me and he was probably the main reason why I did come here.”

The Tigers have three spots to fill on their roster, including two before the start of the season. They remain hopeful Parramatta will release teen prop Stefano Utoikamanu, who they have already signed from 2021.

Souths continue to hold out hope they can land their own front-rower, Jai Arrow, a year early from the Gold Coast. Should they land Arrow, the foundation club will be among the favourits to take the NRL title.

The Titans are open to granting Arrow an early release, but only if it is worth their while.

Thanks for posting that, hopefully we get him.

How the hell is he on 500 000 though!!!

Souths can chip in some if he comes to us.

500k for Doueihi is nuts. That is really poor cap management and they get Latrell and Arrow ? For that amount of money he is better at Souths.

FWIW

Getting desperate now, How about saving your money for JAC.
Is Madge like Cleary can only sign players he used to coach.
Souths suck savs don’t help them out.

Because JAC isn’t coming. Why would he come? Would ruin his rep chances…

Come on… this is nuts. Some posters are so negative at the moment. Chill fellas. I know everyone has an opinion and a free mind but geez, the sun comes up tomorrow - even for WT supporters.

How delusional to believe that if you go the Tigers you cannot make rep teams. It’s not anywhere near that bad.

I can’t see that changing. I would back those 4 if we have a strong no nonsense pack which can roll us forward for 80 minutes.

I was thinking that spine looks alright if they all play to their best. They can all play. I reckon the pack is starting to come good as well.

They don’t have any weapons out wide to throw the ball too though.

I don’t think any of us are pleased with the recruitment.
On the back of 10+ years of failure we really needed to do better in the player market, especially considering the warchest.
Not to say our management didn’t try their hardest.

Frankly, our roster is arguably the worst in the comp and to be honest, one the worst I’ve seen in 40 years I’ve followed Wests/Balmain.

If we finish the dreaded 9th or 10th again it will be because we had some encouraging performances (which are inevitable over the course of a season), and this may once again serve to vindicate the players, management and some fans that we have the right squad and are heading in the right direction. Obviously we all want to win games and compete, but let’s not kid ourselves, every win with this roster is just another chance for us to pull the wool over our eyes and thus walk blindly in a fool’s paradise.

I’d almost rather us finish 15th or 16th and in doing so recognize the need for a serious roster overhaul than go through the emotional turmoil of nearly making it, getting heartbroken again while having to justify our roster at the end of next season.

  1. It’s no worse than last year.

  2. Recruitment hasn’t finished yet.

Great points. In fact with Leilua musgrove and hopefully Stefano it is way better than last year on the additions.

The pack minus hooker is fairly strong.

I’m liking the look of our pack a lot! It’s better than Souths pack imo.

If Souths can’t get Arrow early I am really interested to see how they fare next year. The game is won up front so without a quality pack I don’t believe their backs will shine as well as they could.

Same here
Murray is a gun.other than that pretty shallow pack.

Brooks & Benji will have more time and space.
I’m getting excited 😜

Same 🙂
Especially if they get good ball from dummy

Yes! Thats Why I’d also like to see Mbye start as dummy. Brooks creates some opportunI ties when he runs wide of the ruck. But we have lacked the pace out wide to capitalise.

Mbye is pretty quick as well. It’ll get him involved around the middle of the ruck. Maybe the spine will look something like this:-

1 Thompson
6 Benji
7 Brooks
9 Mbye

He didn’t take a swipe at the club. Spoke highly of Maguire and Adam Hartigan he just wanted to play at South’s and Russell Crowe wanted him to and so did his family.

There is no need for us to take it personally. We can wish him the best, accept his decision and still think he made the wrong decision.

Tigers actively looking for a top line centre as a point of need now (that’s from with-in the organisation) Content with forward pack.

Any more details on this point ? For instance is Mbye set for the centres ? My take is Mbye must be considered for the 1 or 9 if we are after a centre.

We got problems.

Unfortunately this is correct. There are some positives but our 1 to 5 and spine are an issue. Our pack is developing nicely but it’s not a pack that will roll over every team in the comp. There are a lot of younger guys in the pack that we need to step up over the next couple of seasons.

1.Mbye 100% fit he’s one of the better ball playing fullbacks 8n the game…smart kid, ill back for a Star year
2.JAC if we don’t sign him we are in trouble
3.Talau/jennnings probs our weakest position…think Jennings will start and Talau might pop in…a combo of Talau JAC would be very nice in the future
4.momo somehow always finds the line
5. nofo attacking weapon nuff said
6.benji
7.brooks
8.Aloiai
9.walters or grub (whoever can play 80 and offer good ball, on the plus side both come with a kicking game)
10.Mikaele
11.garner
12.leilia
13.Twal (Big minties solid defence lacks the imapact for prop imo, would alllow thommo to come on for 20 with Twal 0laying 60

14.thommo
15.MCk (our second rowers can’t get through 80)
16. Packer or clakre (big body prop)
17. Musgrove or stefano (impact prop)

I for one love thommo but I believe he isn’t starting 13 standard…I’d love to see him come on for 20 mins in the middle using his handy step an acceraltion…also has the ability to tackle his guts out. This would allow us to have two big men on the bench and a second rower

You want to play Corey at lock for 20 mins each game?

Well he would provide backline utility, but if not needed yes, 10 to 20 mins in the middle looking for offloads jinking around…he wouldn’t be taking hit ups or anything, but feel he could be an attacking revelation there…his defence is also very solid

Idk man it sounds like some video game fantasy.
MCK is the bench utility who covers the backs.

Your bench is beyond ineffective to me.
Sheens style, carrying Fitzy and Beau Ryan on the bench for the last 5 mins of game time.

We all know our best rotation was when Potter ran,

  1. Sue
  2. Taupau
  3. Gavet
  4. Seumanufagai

Full wrecking crew bench.
Id like us to get back to something like this.

  1. Che Kam
  2. Mikaele
  3. Musgrove
  4. Stefano or Packer

I like this idea but I think we will need a reserve hooker on the bench. We don’t have a recognized first grade hooker in the team. I figure we will have to run with one on the bench for a while at least.

No way you’d turn down a contract double the size. We’re either the worst destination imaginable, or they’re making up the rest of the contract somehow. Thinking it’s the latter. The difference was too great for that not to be happening in the background somewhere. Next minute Rusty sets him up with a Ferrari as a welcome gift.

I’m thinking it’s the former.

If this is the case why ??? Personally I don’t see it. The only reasons I can see is Madge trains them too hard and they aren’t a glamour club. Those reasons compared to the money to me don’t make any sense.

Is there any other possible explanation. What if he really wanted to play for Souths ? Maybe he isn’t as interested in money.

I wish we got him. I reckon he is exactly the player that we need and he could turn us around. I also think we will be fine.

Now it’s fallen through I think we are floundering around trying to make up the shortfall, asking other clubs for their cast off backs, so late in the off season, but it’s just not working as players are happy to stay put, if they are able, at this late stage.

I also think we haven’t lost our marbles and paid overs for the wrong players. It’s harder to make signings for us because we are after talented players. We also appear to be buying juniors that may come good because you need some talented kids coming through.
