Really?

I mean really? This has gotta be the weakest position in our history.

Lawrence is a club stalwart but he only had one or two good years at centre. He was never “very good”. (subjective i guess)…

I would say Wests Tigers as an entity has had no more than 3 “very good” centres. And certainly none for the best part of the last 15 years, i.e. since Whatuira.

Its ignorance in the extreme to suggest Lawrence was never very good pre hip injury.

By far the best centre I have ever seen play for the Tigers and I have been following since 1970

Puhhlease!!!
Get real!
I said he had a good few seasons. Maybe he was “very good” for two seasons. But “BY FAR THE BEST CENTRE???”
And Since the 70’s???
OMG
Are you Chris Lawrence?

It seems that no-one on this forum can EVER knock Lawrence or Brooks!!
Now he is the greatest centre we have had in 50 years???
WHAT THE??

If you ever wanted evidence that the Lawrence love-fest has gotten out of hand then this is it!

Firstly, just from Wests Tigers era we have had better players at centre. Whatuira was MUCH better. Halatau and one of my all-time faves Buddha were fantastic. At least IMO their centre careers were “very good” for at least as long, if not longer than Lawrence’s.

From a Balmain perspective in the 80’s, 90’s…I can’t remember too many great centres but Brasher played many years there and is in another class to Lawrence. Obviously.
So was Gary Schofield. But craziest of all @larry you think he is better than Ellery Hanley…

I mean, really… Lawrence better then the black pearl. Well I never. This has gone too far.

I took this comment a bit seriously until you rated Kevin McGuinness above Chris Lawrence. Let yourself down at this point.
You need to remember Lawrence did his hip before his prime. He could have been a great centre but only as good as the 6 inside him.

On 2 occasions in the first half Brooks died with the ball on the last tackle. Happy to spend his $500,000 elsewhere

The usual trolls just love these emotive threads

We have pea hearts who tank and dog it… We have players who show the slightest bit of ability can’t wait to get out… We have players undermine and knife others in the back…
… And we have some here who give it to a bloke who gives it everything every time he takes the field

Well said Ink, totally agree.

100%. if he wasn’t a first grader Ivan wouldn’t pick him. This forum only highlights blokes that have no idea. Every club has a dozen clubman and Chris Lawrence is one of ours.

Skandalis, Gibbs, laffranchi, Payten wasn’t a bad pack. Gibbs very underrated

rugby league is dying in MacArthur. Wests Tigers and the NRL are to blame. The AFL has moved in and now it is only a matter of time. Tv and greed have killed the goose.

He is now the 16th player to sign or re-sign since Cleary came on board

With more to come, Ivan has certainly been a busy boy!!

Biggest recruitment drive I’ve ever seen at this club! So nice to actually have some money to spend on decent players, after all the years of drought and signing one or two fringe players per season.

Starting to look like a whole new backline for 2018, hopefully with some speed and defensive skills 😃

Not just biggest recruitment drive at this club - I can;t remember any team completely rebuilt to this extent in one season!

In 1991 the Wok bought Gillespie, langmack, Thomas, wynn, Rampling, Gibbs, Farrah , & dymock to compliment henjak, Lindner and if it wasn’t for the roosters we would have got terry hill. Transformed wests from easy beats to semi finalists in 12 months. They could have won the comp that year but for injuries and a couple of poor passes from Jason Taylor

Only the Tigers would get into a bidding war with a Reserve Grader…

If he goes to Cowboys, who will that squeeze out thats worth looking at?

agree - buy reserve graders get reserve grade results waste of money

You can’t build a team exclusively by signing other people’s first-grade players - you couldn’t stay under the cap. There are lots of examples of players that were on the outer at a club for one reason or another who went on to be very good elsewhere, so saying all reserve-grade signings are rubbish is patently stupid. Especially when you’re talking about someone like Lolohea, who basically everyone acknowledges is a first-grade talent who may be lacking in application. This isn’t signing some career reggie who’s never sniffed first grade, you know.

Here you go:

  • Leilua (unwanted BY THE KNIGHTS for goodness’ sake)
  • Rapana (out of the game completely, signed via reserve grade)
  • Tapau (not being used by the Bulldogs when the Tigers signed him)
  • Austin (not being used by the Panthers when the Tigers signed him)
  • Cheyse Blair (unwanted by Manly)
  • Brenko Lee (not featuring for the Raiders)

This is literally off the top of my head. There must be dozens of them.

…yes and im willing to bet none of the above were offered $500k plus a year to move clubs from reserve grade apart from Austin who was a first grader at the time. big difference
