Funny how quick the decision was by the NRL regarding the Burgess cap.
Our one for Ben Mato took forever.

It is the offseason. Do you officially know how long it took between Tigers submitting Mats vs NRL decision? Did we submit before the GF?

I think they were all handled in adequate time - Tigers have had ample time to start putting Mats’ money to use prior to 2020.

Time frame or no time frame the Burgess call is crap …and it shows to me how stupid the NRL thinks we as fans are

Their own medico was the one saying that Burgess could be back by the 2022 …what that didn’t suit the poor ol Wabbits and Wusty’s time frame

I’m fine with that. Why can’t a player retire due to legitimate serious injury and not have to penalise the club for having signed them to a contract, take it off the salary cap?

I don’t think you understand what I said …Burgess will be fine to play again 2022 …Rabbits don’t want to fork out dead money for Burgess so they organize a post footy job for him

No I understand and I’m fine with it. I don’t think any team should have to fork out dead money on the salary cap, so long as the player gets his contract value. I don’t think teams should be penalised on salary cap if a player decides to stop playing for any reason, be it legitimate injury, personal reasons etc. Why should you be forced to wear the cap penalty for a player who isn’t even part of your playing group any more?

Why does a team have to cop the full salary cap if their player chooses to retire, for any reason? Whether or not his injury is legitimately career-ending or not. I’m not going to get into the nitty-gritty of medical opinions, but it’s not as straightforward as “he’ll be right to play in 2022”. Medical opinions are guesses not guarantees. And even if it was that straightforward, we are talking about 24 months out of the game and trying to get back to elite performance / status?

I say open the floodgates, let teams organise post-footy cushy jobs for their players, because it’s been happening for as long as rugby league has been a sport, not just GI and Burgess. You don’t reckon Cooper Cronk knew he’d get a coaching job from Roosters after he retired? Before he even joined, perhaps.

Gonna disagree big time …if we continue this trend clubs will purposely over-sign players on contracts that they can’t possibly meet

If you sign a player that chooses to retire because you purposely added two years to his contract to retain him …God help the game

Not getting a starting spot with the Dragons says more about Mary McGregor’s judgement than LL’s talent!

Dunno that back row was a pretty damn fine thing at full strength

’m afraid it’s not something you can choose to disagree with because it’s not an opinion. We signed Josh Reynolds, Russell Packer and Ben Matulino before the 2018 season.

It is an opinion. I don’t consider the three you mentioned to be particularly high profile players. Reynolds was discarded by the Dogs, Packer has a high profile for non playing reasons, and Matulino was past his best. The only thing high profile about them was what they were getting paid.

100% selective memory on your part. The Dogs’ cap was knackered so they couldn’t make Reynolds an offer (also, every single free agent who moves clubs presumably didn’t get a better offer from the club they were previously at). Packer was coming off a massive season with the Dragons where he’d been talked up all year, also gettin recalled by NZ mid-way through the 2017 season and playing every game for them in that year’s world cup. Matulino was lower profile but highly rated, and he was 28 - no reason to think he’d be past his best.

You’re also refusing to engage with the main point I’m making: we didn’t get turned down by other major free agents in 2017-18, which was - again - the only other time we’ve had money to spend in pre-season for the past decade. Look at the list: who were the players we pursued that wouldn’t sign for us? We signed badly (as did basically everyone else who acquired high-profile free agents that year). That’s not the same thing as players not wanting to sign for us.

re Packer, he had broken down mid season for Saints (after a very good first half of the season). Legend has it Mary and the Saints staff all got up and clapped when he announced his deal with us (as they were so happy he had made his fortune after being in jail). Saints offer was about 400…ours was 650 plus.

That off season, yes, we did get players to come…but we paid massive overs for Josh and Packer. Not just “overs”, but massive.

And we added a fourth year to their deals…just to make sure. Josh Reynolds, with a history of hammys, four years.

It was absolutely irresponsible from Cleary and Pascoe (who sat, smiled and signed off on it all)

I do not care if we finish last in 2020 as long as we never do that again.

Yes, throw overs at the absolute elite if you can get a current origin player…

But never, ever, throw massive overs again at broken down players past their primes.

To be clear, I don’t disagree with any of this. All I’m saying is that there’s a difference between (a) the Tigers have signed badly when they have had resources available, and (b) good players won’t sign for the Tigers. They could both be true, but what I’m saying is that while we know (a) is true we really don’t have any evidence of (b).

Re B, I have been a supporter for 40 years and we have never been able to sign elite talent (other than Poms looking for a chance)

I know that is not empirical, but it does seem clear elite players do not want to join us.

When was the last time we signed a current Kangaroo?

Edit: adding to that, when was the last time we also signed a current Origin player?
Ellery, we don’t need to sign players, we need to keep them. How would we be going if we still had Tedesco, Koroibete, Addo Carr, Woods (?) Moses, Nathan Brown etc.

Add Taupau ,Sironen , Fifita ,Gower , Tatola , Lodge ,Gavet , Ava , Suli and JMK …

Probably need something bigger than a Sombrero and Nick Politis cloned twice

Luciano Leilua ready to take game to next level at Wests Tigers

By Adrian Proszenko
December 7, 2019 — 4.57pm

Luciano Leilua is angling for a starting spot. One at his new team the Wests Tigers. If that all goes to plan, maybe even for the Blues.

“I want to play consistent footy each week and try to make my way up there to representative footy,” Leilua told the Herald. "Just go from there. [State of Origin] has always [been a goal], but first I have to play well for the club and everything will work out.

“Definitely the next step is to play good footy and work towards that goal.”

Leilua has left one joint-venture club for another. He was released from St George Illawarra to join the Tigers, a move that allowed Trent Merrin to return to the Red V. Ostensibly, he’s a replacement for Ryan Matterson, another back-rower that released and found himself back at Parramatta.

For Leilua, the move has come at a good time. The Samoan international had made 43 NRL appearances since debuting for the Dragons in 2016, but felt he needed a change to get to the next level. It’s only taken a handful of training sessions with his new Tigers teammates to convince him he’s made the right decision.

“I’m excited to play here,” he said. "A new coach and a new bunch of boys as well, I’ve fitted in really well, it’s been an easy transition. Definitely, it was a good time for a change, I wasn’t really feeling it over there.

"I’m really excited now and looking forward to putting my head down and working hard.

"Making this change, it’s a great opportunity for me to try to get that starting spot.

“It’s been healthy competition at training, everyone has been fighting hard, so it’s been good.”

Leilua gives the Tigers something different with the ball in hand. Like his brother, Raiders centre Joseph Leilua, the 23-year-old possesses the ball skills and unpredictability that Tigers coach Michael Maguire felt his side required to threaten opposition defences.

He won’t have to wait long to show his former club what they are missing. He will return to WIN Stadium for the Tigers’ opening-round clash against the Dragons.

“If I get the opportunity to play against them, that would be good,” he said. "I’m not really focusing on them, we’re focusing on working hard on pre-season, taking it day by day.

"I don’t have to prove anything to anyone, just to myself. There will be a bit of banter, of course there will be. It will be a bit emotional but it will be good.

"Obviously it was my junior club but times change and you have to move on with life.

“I was a Dragons fan but I was also rooting for (former Dragons teammate) Benji (Marshall). Whenever Benji played, I went for Benji. It’s going to be good to play with him again.”

Don’t know if anyone has noticed but we have two games in 7 days in Qld

The 24th of April v Titans (my 51st year since it was legal to be nude day ) and then the following Friday it’s magic round v the Peptides

Anyone thinking about going I’ll be there with bells on and without the ball and chain or the kids

Two easy wins if I go …haven’t lost in Brisbane since 2004 and apart from the 2009 debacle loss at the GC

Maybe we could organize a few catch ups …

No problems with the interview …the whole "did I get dropped because of the no singing " sounded a bit Mundinish but the cards will fall what ever way they fall now

Bit of patience required

Nothing wrong with it at all. Lot of people have tin foil hats on today…

Please reread what I said …I said it sounded a bit Mundinish …lot of people need to stop reading into everything today

Not arguing with you Happy, but I actually thought his thoughts on race and anthem etc were pretty balanced and measured, nowhere near Mundine levels. I hate identity politics but found myself thinking “yeah fair enough”.

I was surprised at my reaction to the video. Not only do I want him at the Tigers, I want a beer with him.

Of course if he goes to Souffs he is a total scumbag.

Just when he sort of danced around the whole getting dropped for not signing the Anthem at SOO

Yeah I wouldn’t have minded going pig hunting with Latrell and having an ale or three afterwards

Then again I didn’t need any stimulants after a night of pig hunting …pretty wild stuff as I have mentioned previously …pure adrenaline is better than any drug you could even think of doing
