IT’S official. Newcastle have confirmed the signing of Kalyn Ponga from 2018 but they are refusing to give up hope of snaring him for next season.

The Knights released a statement on Monday, stating Ponga has signed a four-year-deal starting next year.

The 18-year-old remains contracted to North Queensland for 2017 but Knights CEO Matt Gidley hasn’t ruled out welcoming him to the Hunter next season.

“As it stands, we are excited about Kalyn joining us in 2018,” Gidley said.

“Should the Cowboys decide to release Kalyn before the conclusion of his contract, we would certainly welcome him to the club at an earlier date.”

The rich contract is worth around $600,000-a-year and includes representative bonuses which would see the teen earn well over $3 million when activated.

A talented fullback, Ponga has played two NRL matches to date, both in the 2016 finals series with the Cowboys.

“There is no doubt Kalyn is a very talented and exciting young player and his signing is definitely a coup for the club,” coach Nathan Brown said.

“We look forward to further developing his talent and welcoming his family to Newcastle.”

Newcastle signed Ponga for $600k…

Surly lichaa would be a good money ball signing? 1 year contract, club option for another year?

The experts on here would disagree.

Meanwhile we run out with a part time center in our spine at 9.

I honestly think Simpkin will be ready to go for rd1, if not rd1, then certainly by rd10, he is our future 9

He isnt even in the top 30…

He can be promoted to the top 30…

What’s interesting is Harry on a public ferry. Probably loves the $2.50 all day pension transport.

Isn’t there a ferry race on the harbour today? Maybe they’re in it

Just seen this on a South Forum

“Some interesting news from a friend who knows a bit of about the inner workings of a few clubs. Take it as you will.
Doueihi had a meeting with Roosters yesterday, Contemplating a move there.
Tedesco HAS apparently done his pec and Roosters are in panic mode. (Feel for him if in fact true)
Apparently we should be expecting an announcement next week Tues/Weds if he agrees.
Interesting turn of events.”

I can actually see this happening where Roosters will get AD and he will turn out to be a SOO player… We will sit back and say if only we increase our offer by 100k…

What if he does his acl?

For those that suggest we get Lichaa, he may not cost much however ,it would mean that he takes up a spot in the 30, So if we do get AD and JL, that leaves us no room to pick up anyone else. So if Stefano does come available this year we could not take him.

100%. I can’t believe people are even mentioning his name. I’d upgrade Simpkin way before getting Lichaa

Read yesterday that you have a 25% greater chance of doing an ACL on the other knee coming back from one.

Added to this the fact AD is yet to est himself as either a FB or 5/8, I’m happy with the Tigers approach.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Billy Smith…

If the figures are accurate, I’m not a fan of BJ for $1.8m over 3. Too much $ and for too long

”.

So what’s the hold up with Leilua?
The Radiers centre wants $600,000 for next year and 2022.

Isn’t that 3 years? As you said, I’m happy with a two year contract…

Our cc team was deadset awful last year. You can’t have a team of teenagers playing against men every week, having someone like Hoffman who’s versatile and experienced is invaluable. Ask Wenty.

Didn’t we have Reynolds, Packer, et, nofo (start of the season) playing cc last year?

Tbh, I’m ok with him as a cc signing, just not sure his experience will be the difference in dead set awful and finals footy.

Geez, Tommy Talau is a big specimen.

Sky’s the limit for the lad.
Looks like an elite athlete.

Looks don’t count. I hope the kid comes on but I’m worried he is going to be a flop.

What do you base that on, from what I’ve seen and read about him he seems to be a student of the game, very competitive and obviously has some pedigree from his old man.

Interested to know why you think he’ll be a flop.

He is highly rated on here without any performance that justifies that rating. When Tedesco, Moses, Brooks, Woods, Benji, Robbie etc came through they looked the goods. We haven’t seen anything like that from Talau.

I hope he kills it but at the moment I think he is hyped too much. It’s like we are desperate for a new star (which we are).

We all have a lot of hope for him because Benji has been quoted as saying he’s the best junior he has seen since teddy.

IF we get AD and JL someone from last year is going to miss out.

Will it be up-and-comer Momo? Or big earner Mbye? Thompson or Jennings? Seems like there’s no space for Reynolds either…

This isn’t necessarily my opinion but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Madge go with:

Doueihi
Nofo
Leilua
Mbye (GK)
Jennings

CT and Momo to miss out.

Yep.
I agree.

Talau next in line.

Could Talau play wing?

Imo… yes

Big and fast. Wouldn’t look out of place.

He should play centre. JL should not be purchased because he will block Talau 's pathway as well as eat into money. We have at least one very good winger coming through without having to push Talau onto the wing to accommodate JL.

I have to agree mate. We need to stop buying named players past their prime.

All the talk is Talau is a gun, why spend big bucks on someone to block his pathway. I also think Momo has the potential to be as good as bj.

Momo has 5/8 skills? Where did this narrative come from lol

I believe someone posted a podcast where he talked about playing there as a junior

The $$$ for both the players named are very worrying.

If we are matchingbthan thats definitely overs for a good entre past his.prime and an average irst grader i
At best

BJ is only 28. Hardly past his prime. AD played fullback in 3 finals last year. Do you really think they would out an average first grader at fullback for a finals series?

Apparently Souths think hel be a really good 5/8 so when Benji retires then who knows. I say try and get both and Stefano. Then apart from hooker the side looks half decent .

Talau and momo are also good 5/8 prospects to replace Benji next year…on a lot less than $600k (reported salary for AD next year)

@Russell said in Signing Suggestions & Rumours:

Well then, I was correct.

He has been paid 125k to date.

All we have to do is get him to sign for 375k. and for Souffs to release him.

We get a bargain and he gets his 500k.

Everyone is happy.

What about the $600k contract for 2021 that he has with the bunnies?

That equates to $975 over 2 years…

Lucy, Musgrove, Clark and a couple of junior rep players to add to that…very exciting
