I really liked the idea of getting Cust. He fits perfectly with with Maguire is doing. Tough, well-priced, talented. I’d be shocked if we go anywhere near Widdop as he seems too old compared to what we’ve targeted so far. Wouldn’t be surprised to see one of the big contracts loaned to someone else for next year. Even paying half of it allows us to throw solid cash at an up-and-comer
look at Parra and newcastle it takes time to turn the titanic around
They’ve both done it MUCH faster than we have. 9 years on and we’re still shuffling around. They get a spoon or two, clear the decks and sign superstars. We’re a joke.
Give Madge a further 2 year extension and let him do his thing.
We still let Cleary and Panthers off way too lightly. We should have insisted he take one of the bad contracts with him to the Panthers or no deal. He screwed our cap for years and we settled for 500k outside the cap. Not good enough.
It’s a little bit more complicated than saying they’ve done it much faster. They have had stability in front office and coaching on Parramatta’s behalf and an influx of serious wealth on Newcastle’s behalf (and even then have Newcastle achieved much with it so far?) .
On our side we have had Humphreys, Grant Mayer and Pascoe in the front office plus Sheens, Potter, Taylor, Cleary and now Maguire as coaches. That’s 8 people involved in key recruitment and decision making in 9 years! You will NEVER achieve any success as an organisation with the unclear vision that amount of change brings. Sadly, I would say we wrote off 7.5 years there, which is unfathomable for any business. Really, if Maguire and Pascoe don’t succeed here I don’t know why the NRL would keep us around. Aside from their financial donations they’ve never had enough resources or leadership themselves to help us out.
Teams/businesses need strong governance and we’ve simply never had it until now. Without it you become a novelty, a hobby, like the Newtown Jets. Belatedly though I think we have our ShiP in order.
If I look objectively at the 17 it’s arguably the worst Tigers side I’ve ever seen.
Overdramatic. How’s this one, Rd 19 2002, 46-14 loss to Broncos:
Better forwards perhaps back then though tbh. But the backs were terrible
And even then the forward pack was average, a couple years away from hitting any heights.
Can sign all the wingers in the world but till they find a forward leader, fix the spine and get a real goal kicker they are going nowhere
Forwards are fine. Halves are the major issue
@supercoach is right though, they are seriously missing some mongrel in the pack. Perhaps they just need a year or two more to grow because there is certainly talent in that group.
I thought the cutoff for signing players was yesterday but it seems clubs are still making moves.
If we signed Saab it would have to be as a development player joining our top 30 next season or we would have to move someone on as our top 30 is full.
Maybe he will stick out the year at dragons and join us next season
Saab will nit be coming as a development player.
We would have to move someone on then. If it’s me I’m giving him a development contract for the end of this season, he can still play first grade, then promote him next seasons. It’s a loophole to sign players if your top 30 is full.
The story says he’s being released for next season.
Your question asking whether we back the coach or the playing group assumes there is a rift. News to me. Do you know of a rift? If there is a mutiny I’d sack every player who is part of it, no matter who they are.
Isn’t it funny what a few losses in a row leads to…
Simple solution win football games and everything goes away…
I also think it’s funny that whenever Maguire has a temper tantrum he’s too hard and the players hate him. Bellamy does it and he’s bringing out the best in his playing group!!
Sure but I don’t think Bellamy has always been like that either. And he’s had Smith, Cronk and other intelligent, highly successful players there to support his message.
The amount you pay for him would allow the purchase of a young x factor player the calibre of Ponga. We need to target an outstanding talent such as the young NZ player all clubs were chasing when 16 who is now at the Roosters.
We have done a great job of signing young talent already but we need tough experience players to bring them on and show how to handles the bad times… Clearly the ones we currently have don’t know how to do it so need a change.
1st action would be to get another captain that can be an on field captain and not a by stander
Fair call. But there’s no way we can offload Mbye at full cost. Do we offer him to another club and foot half the bill, around $400k? Who’s our captain otherwise? Not Marshall, not Brooks. Aloiai is smart enough imo.
The reality is that next season will be more of the same. We’ll be able to throw the money around for 2022 w/ Mbye, Reynolds, Packer all off the books. It’s then we’ll start complementing a promising forward pack with a damaging backline.
