https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/wests-tigers-meet-joey-leilua-prepare-to-offer-doueihi-a-deal-20200120-p53t3f.html

Wests Tigers have cranked up their recruitment drive by meeting Canberra giant Joey Leilua on Monday and completing the finer details on a contract they will offer Adam Doueihi in the next 48 hours.

Leilua met with club boss Justin Pascoe and coach Michael Maguire about swapping Canberra for Concord, despite having a year to run on his deal at the Green Machine.
Joey Leilua could be joining his younger brother Luciano at Wests Tigers this year.

The Tigers signed Joey’s younger brother Luciano for this season and are desperate to beef up their stocks in the outside backs.

Leilua, who stands to earn about $700,000 this season in his final year at Canberra, was already told he would not be offered a deal in 2021, and could do it tough to nail down his starting right-centre spot now Curtis Scott had arrived from Melbourne.

While the Tigers are yet to offer Leilua a deal, their pursuit of Doueihi is expected to get more serious in the coming days.

The Tigers have about $800,000 in their cap and can easily accommodate both this year.

South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett informed Doueihi last week he was free to pursue a starting fullback spot elsewhere, especially with Latrell Mitchell to be given first crack at No.1.

Doueihi was given his start in the NRL by former Souths coach Maguire and signed with the Rabbitohs at the time because of their lack of depth in the halves. The chance to be Benji Marshall’s long-term five-eighth understudy also has appeal.

Having the 190cm right-footed Doueihi and left-footed halfback Luke Brooks as the playmakers would seriously excite Tigers fans in future years.

Marshall, 35, next month, is held in such high regard at the club that Tigers officials are more than happy to entertain the idea of him playing on again should he feel physically and mentally fresh at the end of the season.

The Tigers have three spots to fill on their roster, and have not given up hope of luring teen prop Stefano Utoikamanu away from Parramatta a year early.

In Doueihi’s case, the big sticking point for any move will continue to be money, especially with the Lebanon international on a back-ended deal and collecting more than $500,000 this season, then over $600,000 next year.

Souths have already told Doueihi they are happy for him to see out the final two years, and they can accommodate him in their cap, but his best hope of playing could be off the bench.

Doueihi, a second cousin of dumped Wallabies coach Michael Cheika, had interest from the Waratahs before he signed his first NRL deal, but a return to the 15-man code was not on his radar.

"Rugby hasn’t been discussed as an option,’’ Doueihi’s agent Sam Ayoub said on Monday night.

In the space of a week or so, Joey has gone from 600k to 700k and WT from over 1M in cap to now 800k in cap 🧐

And yet, It also states that WT can afford both, so go figure.

Hedging their bets

Someone’s got to.

What do you mean when you say St. Pats has a high opinion of itself?

I mean that St Pats tries to position itself as one of the fancy schools in the area, but it’s just a regular Christian Bros with average sporting and academic achievements. And everyone likes beating them in any endeavour possible.

Shame they don’t play League anymore; there’s so much energy wasted in schoolboy rugby, that has no long term purpose within the 4th-ranked dying football code. You’ve got all these kids in ISA / CAS / GPS schools, the latter with their faux exclusivity and horrendous school fees, plying away at rugby to then play Shute Shield or maybe jag some pointless Super Rugby spot, until the powers close a franchise down.

Very, very sad, don’t you think?

Missed the fight. It looked choreographed.
Those x3 shoulder shots were a laugh & 1/2

The purse was 200k cowboy & 6m Conor.
Like Diaz said, looked fake. Probably paid

And the circus continues - UFC cash cow gets a pass yet again. The fight game is a joke.

Couldn’t of said it better myself.
Pathetic card.

Hows the ridiculous co main event.
A pathetic women fight that was so uninspiring.

A chance to have a stacked card that so many casual fans who tune in to see their hero Conrad fight… really missed out on a huge oppurtunity with such a poor card.

Did u have to work today bra?
I’m just happy knowing i didn’t take a day off and lose money to watch this joke.

Regular day off for me.

Did you pay to watch that crap ?
Seen better fights in Coles car park …

Hahahah HobboKnows 😏

Now that that garbage is over and the McGregor train is back on the tracks, let’s see him fight someone worthwhile. Hope Gaethje gets a chance to blast his head clean off.

Word to that.
Gaethje or Masvidal wont fold like Cowgirl.

Masvidal would have to be next. Gaethje would be an ugly fight!! Mac prefers that

The NRL are like a Bikie club. They need to open a chapter in East Sydney, South Sydney Brissy & Melb. From the Tele this morning:

"James Packer joined Russell Crowe and Wayne Bennett to help Souths land Latrell Mitchell. Aaron Francis/The Australian
James Packer joined Russell Crowe and Wayne Bennett to help Souths land Latrell Mitchell.

The movie star, the master-coach and the money man — how could Latrell Mitchell say no?

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal James Packer joined Russell Crowe and Wayne Bennett to form arguably the greatest, and certainly the most extraordinary, rugby league recruitment team ever assembled.

Packing two Golden Globes, an Academy Award, seven NRL premierships and more than $3.5 billion, Packer, Bennett and Crowe combined to deliver the Rabbitohs a future South Sydney great.

Just a day after Bennett met the runaway Rooster at a secret location in Sydney, Packer flew to Coffs Harbour on his private jet to join Crowe and Mitchell for a private dinner, catered for by a personal chef.

While details of the dinner at Crowe’s luxury Nana Glen estate were revealed by The Daily Telegraph last week, Packer’s attendance and involvement in the bid were kept a closely guarded secret.

Until today.

The casino mogul and Crowe teamed up to convince Mitchell that South Sydney was his new home. Mitchell travelled back to Sydney intent on becoming a Rabbitoh.

After knocking back South’s first offer, Mitchell agreed to sign last Sunday on a one-year deal with another year option in the club’s favour. The deal is estimated to be worth $1.4 million over two years.

Despite signing a deal worth less than the $3.2 million he had been offered by the Roosters over four years, Mitchell is content with the contract that could amount to just $600,000 should Souths not exercise the second year.

The Roosters were stunned that Mitchell accepted the deal after he reportedly “laughed’’ when they made him the $800,000-a-year offer.

Avoiding an ugly showdown with their oldest rivals, the Roosters backed away from a compensation demand and released Mitchell from the final year of his deal.

But on one condition.

He must pay out his former manager, Steve Deacon.

ADDO CARR LINKED TO BUNNIES

With the dust yet to settle on the Latrell Mitchell deal, South Sydney have already been linked to another NRL big name.

Less than 48 hours after announcing they had signed Mitchell, there are noises emerging that Souths are now interested in Josh Addo-Carr, the man known as the Fox, and preparing to offer the Storm a player swap.

South Sydney have reportedly shopped Alex Johnston, Adam Doueihi and Dane Gagai to rival clubs."

Souths aren’t getting JAC. Roosters in pole position, us burning gas in hot pursuit… just remains to be seen if we’re driving the right direction

I can see many people on here still giving it to the club for not having a major signing yet…I tend to sit back and wait until something positive is released by the club, when that is,I don’t know…
From seeing what is going on atm,I honestly believe that Madge and co don’t want to make the same mistakes like in the past;I also believe that with so many young guys in the system atm,Madge seems to want to create from within…I remember when we had some great young players when Sheens was here and he got that legend Gareth Ellis to the club, that was great…maybe Madge is working on the same formula as it seems to work for us…just my opinion though…

The biggest mistake is to do nothing, even a poor mistake is an attempt to fix the problem we have. But saying this, we just need to limit our exposure, spending $500k to attempt to fix a significant hole is in my view, worth it.

Doing nothing fixes nothing

I can see what your saying Lidcombe, however, how many holes did we try and fix before to no avail…Ballin,Reynolds come to mind…they did something and fixed nothing…
Im saying that Madge and co are being significantly more wary with the money they have to get the right player at the right price …they are doing something but are more careful than in the past so it seems…

Sure fire way to not fix it though is to do nothing.

You don’t do damage to your cap and immediate signing prospects by “doing something” like signing 2 or 3 players at overs for long terms e.g. Reynolds, Mbye, Jennings etc.

Conversely unless we do something we won’t be competitive in 2020. Backline is atrocious. Need to roll the dice and not be scared of mistakes of the past. No point sitting back watching the comp just pass us by.

Doesn’t matter what we do for 2020 we “ain’t” going to win the comp.

However, if we don’t do anything stupid, (buy people we need, not that we can fill a gap with) we can put ourselves in a good position to buy those players, promote those players and give the whole dam comp a shake for 2021 onwards.

There are very few players you would really want to grab on the market at the moment ( one may come on the market) - however there are a lot of players coming off contract at the end of this year. Yes there will be more clubs looking that have money but I doubt they will have as much as us.

I would hardly say our backline is atrocious, not the greatest but with our improved forward pack we can easily make the finals this year. Yes, that is my opinion Avo, not yours, I do understand.

Great post, Russ!

Can someone explain to me how we were offering LM anything from 800k to 1.1 mil for 2020 when now its being reported we only have 600k in the kitty. The media just make things up.

I’d say they can clearly see how tightly run this ship is now, and can only try to derail us.

IF JAC is moving this year - it is to WT. Dogs cannot and will not be considered next to an official offer from us - which hasn’t happened yet - and it shows just how far we’ve progressed… nobody really knows until a signing’s made, but JAC + Doueihi > L.M + Johnston. 650-700k for Josh and round it to $1 million for both when the Bunnies start to play ball. Dominoes to fall so watch this space!

Rorters have plenty to spend now too and will probably get him

Absolutely. Always our biggest hurdle when we compete with cheats from the East for a signature. Praying it turns out differently👌🏽

Dogs seem to burn us a lot as well and in this instance have the players necessarily available to facilitate a trade. Maybe having to force JAC’s hand. It’s really very pathetic with all the smoke and mirrors attempting to hide something so obvious in plain sight. The prodigal son wants to return and you’d hope Madge will put out a serious feeler to them this week/end - just basing that on his previous coaching role under Belly !
