The Tigers continue to reshape their roster with a number of key signings and re-signings. The club will soon announce the recruitment of Luciano Leilua to fill the void left by the departure of Ryan Matterson. The Dragons had at one point contemplated a Leilua-Matterson swap, although the latter instead returned to Parramatta.

The Tigers have exacted some revenge on the Eels with the signing of young gun Stefano Utoikamanu, who is expected to make his NRL debut next season. Utoikamanu has signed with the Tigers for three years from 2021, but they will accommodate him immediately if he is granted an early release.

The Tigers, meanwhile, have stepped up their pursuit of Latrell. The joint-venture outfit has tabled a three-year deal from 2021, which will effectively become a four-year offer commencing next season once the Roosters officially grant him a release. Given the premiers are paying more than $14,000 a week to a player they no longer want, they are keen to get the NSW and Australian centre off their books.

Latrell Mitchell’s manager Wade Rushton
“The Tigers have shown great interest and they have put forward an offer they want to discuss with us,” said Mitchell’s manager, Wade Rushton.

“In the next week or so we should be able to sit down with them and discuss their offer.”

At a guess, I’d say he’ll be with us for 2020. Obviously eels can keep him around and play in the lower grades, by doing so, takes up one of their development contract spots for someone who won’t be there the following year

The Wests Tigers have snuck under the guard of Parramatta to steal one of the hottest young talents in the game on a three-year deal.

The Tigers have secured the services of hulking prop Stefano Utoikamanu from 2021 with one of the largest contracts for a player yet to make his NRL debut, understood to be worth around $800,000.

Parramatta were desperate to retain the 192cm, 115kg teenage sensation, who has drawn comparisons to Broncos sensation Payne Haas.

On the back of Ryan Matterson’s defection to the Eels, the Tigers have managed to land the major coup and are also expected to sign Dragons forward Luciano Leilua in the coming days.

It is understood the Tigers, who are also the frontrunners for Latrell Mitchell, want the Australian Schoolboys representative to join the club immediately to play for them in the NRL in 2020.

However, the Eels earmarked Utoikamanu, who grew up playing against the likes of Haas and David Fifita, to make his debut in 2020 and now have a decision to make whether to keep him at the club or let him link with the Tigers immediately.

NRL.com understands Utoikamanu, who is on a development contract with the Eels and is no guarantee of being bumped up into the NRL squad, stands to earn almost triple the original offer the Eels put to him midway through the year.

The Eels raised their offer in recent weeks – and again on Thursday night in a desperate bid to hold on to him – however Utoikamanu had already reached a decision.

The strength of the Eels pack, with Junior Paulo and Reagan Campbell-Gillard starting up front, was also a factor – especially considering there are far fewer obstacles in front of him at the Tigers.

The Eels also have no shortage of depth in the front row, with NSW under 18s Origin front-rower Dave Hollis on their roster, as well as Sam Hughes, who was picked but missed the game due to suspension.

Tigers coach Michael Maguire is desperate to add some size and starch to his pack, and the signing of Utoikamanu, who represented the NSW under 20s last season, is sure to do that whenever he arrives at Concord.

Utoikamanu scored the match-winning try for NSW in a man-of-the-match performance in the under 18s Origin game last year, backing that up with 149 metres from 11 hit-ups for the Blues in the under 20s victory this year.

That’s not 800k a year?

Assuming it’s for the length of the contract

@avocadoontoast all good, lol. but don’t u agree we really need 2 very good forwards and one good centre even if we get LM.it really gets most on here upset that we are stated to be in for this player and that player, but nothing ever seems to come of. we were told that lomax was close to signing now he is close to signing for the knights. we were hopeful that we would get something for that dog going to the eels yet he has signed and again nothing.

I think we need one prop, one backrower and I’d love a tall fast winger.

I’d say the prop is coming and it’s the one you and many others don’t want here.

Are we talking the Pommie or Tetevano ??

Tetavano but looks like that won’t be happening. No idea what other props are available… we do need one though

Barrel is basically empty Mago and Perrett …even Peni Terepo has been snapped up

Might need to sign someone who is on the outter for 2020 and get their team to pay a portion of the contract.

Wests Tigers youngsters and extended NRL squad members officially returned for pre-season training this week as preparations begun for the 2020 NRL season.

High Performance Manager Andrew Gray provided an update on a number of players who are currently undergoing rehabilitation following off-season surgeries, as well as those who are continuing to recover from injuries sustained in 2019.

Having suffered a serious knee injury in Round 22 last season, Jacob Liddle took a huge step forward in his recovery this week with the removal of a knee brace.

Following a positive surgical review, the young hooker can now begin his lower body rehabilitation program with a planned return to running in the early rounds of the 2020 season.

Josh Aloiai also recently received positive news following successful wrist surgery and will commence pre-season training in a splint until further healing occurs.

Russell Packer continues his recovery from a foot injury that saw the New Zealand international require surgery towards the back end of the season, while fellow Kiwi Elijah Taylor will return to training in early December following minor knee surgery.

Matt Eisenhuth and Alex Twal both had successful groin surgery in the off-season and will resume full team training in the coming weeks in the lead up to 2020.

During their representative commitments for Samoa, both Michael Chee Kam (shoulder) and David Nofoaluma (elbow) sustained injuries but neither will require surgery, with the pair to resume pre-season training in early December.

Currently on a train-and-trial contract, Brad Abbey is also progressing well following ACL surgery with the Canberra Raiders during 2019 and is on track to return to full training in February next season.

Wests Tigers senior players will all return for pre-season training in the coming weeks as Michael Maguire’s side continue to lay a strong platform for the year ahead.
