Benji worth every cent - Lawrence

Benji Marshall has admitted his poor form has been a major factor in Wests' disappointing start to the year
Benji Marshall has admitted his poor form has been a major factor in Wests' disappointing start to the year

Benji Marshall has lost his confidence, his Test captaincy and even the strength in his big toe, but the Wests Tigers playmaker still commands the utmost respect of his teammates.

Marshall, who will play his second game following a turf toe injury against Cronulla at Allianz Stadium on Friday, put his hand up this week and accepted much of the Tigers' woes this season.

It was a stunning admission from the club's highest-profile player, who is deep in negotiations with a view to signing a deal that would make the 28-year-old a Tiger for life.

Marshall is reportedly close to inking an upgrade of his current contract, which ends at the end of next season, which would keep him at the Tigers on a five-year deal worth $4 million.

The hefty price tag, and Marshall's indifferent form, led to some sections of the rugby league world questioning whether the former New Zealand skipper is still deserving of such a contract.

"He's worth every cent to us," Tigers centre Chris Lawrence told AAP.

Marshall has been critical of his own form in 2013, but Lawrence said once he returns to the peak of his powers there won't be a person in the game who thinks he isn't worth the money.

"By his own admission he probably hasn't had the greatest 12 months," Lawrence said.

"But a lot of that is probably not just put on his shoulders but on the rest of the team as well.

"As a team we haven't performed well in the last 12 months.

"At times he might have been trying to try too hard and forgetting what his role in the team is.

"I'm sure he'll get back to his best form and when he does a lot of people will change their minds and be saying he's worth every cent."

Marshall's likely re-signing follows on from skipper Robbie Farah committing long-term to the club, an indication Lawrence believes the Tigers are well set for the rest of their careers.

"Having Robbie sign basically for the rest of his career was a massive boost for us, knowing he's going to retire a Tiger," he said.

"But having that stability within the halves is just as important.

"In any club you need to know and have long-term plans for your halves, so to have Benji potentially re-sign would be great for the club."

If Lawrence can feel ok collecting his 300k salary on his form, of course he is going to think Benji is value.

Dont truthfully hate either, but hate that in almost any other profession on the planet, dropping off that badly at work would cost most their livelyhood.... At WT it seems the norm, if not a raise.

I don't see why other players in particular non performing players have to continually make public opinions on who the club should sign or resign.

Rowdy reminds me of Richie Cunningham. Couldn't see him saying a bad word about anybody.

Look I love Rowdy ,and I've been giving him a hard time about his form but he has no right to way in with crap like that

Not only has Rowdy lost form , he has lost his judgement as well

These guys all go on about being brothers for life ,let them do it in NSW CUP instead of trying to hold the club to ransom with interviews like that

Mr Lawernce should be more concerned about what he is earning to what his performances are at the moment ,another that should be on the shop around list injury has caught up to him sadly. He should be concerned about what is happening around himself.

I appreciate the positive talk but the reality is nobody should be given anything in terms of contract until they perform.

Give a big money multi year extension to someone whose team mates admit is not playing well is pure madness

Lawrence needs to be looking at his own performance instead of worrying about his mate.
At least Benji comes out and admits he is playing crap, be good if Lawrence admitted his faults also as his form has been way below par for a rep player.

I know these guys have media obligations but is it just me or is there a new article EVERY SINGLE DAY about our players?

I just wish they would shut up and play. They should put them on a media ban.

This is why Wests Tigers have a soft culture. Blokes like Cam Smith and Bellemy read the riot act to underperforming players and are not afraid to say so in the media. Tigers all you get is back slapping and brother garbage. Yeah brothers that they were so tight they made 3 finals in 10 seasons.

Mr Lawrence can comment all he wants, but his own performance is not up to standard, who is he to judge who is good enough. Like his own standard his judgement is poor.Show us you can play well and we will respect and listen to you. First you have to prove yourself , Lawrence. Your words do not carry the weight it deserves for now, till you prove yourself.

Spot on. It's nothing but garbage and we've heard it for years.

The annual salary of some of these top footballers is more than that of the Australian Prime Minister.

For a player who must be on $400-500k he needs to stand up a bit more and be a leader. If you continually praise eveyone regardless of their performance then of course standards will lower, as players know that they will be praised regardless of the output returned.

That's how you breed a soft and lazy culture. Individuals need to be held accountable, something which has rarely happened at the WT, and usually only to fringe players. We have never dropped a big name for not performing.

It seems the desire to win isn't as great as it should be for some players, and that as long as they get paud and their mates say they're doing well then that's all that matters. Not good enough.

Benji at least admitted the blindingly obvious for the first time in his career, but will he play a more reserved role tonight? I doubt it.
