Ellis to play 50th game tonight

Post by Discussion Bot » Fri 22 Apr, 2011 12:40 pm

Wests Tigers second-rower Gareth Ellis will be looking for an extra special performance tonight when he plays his 50th match for the Club.

Ellis – the world’s best second-rower for the past few years – sits on 49 games for Wests Tigers since joining the Club from Leeds for the 2009 season. He is signed to Wests Tigers until the end of 2013.

Since then, Ellis has proven to be a powerful back-rower and has added plenty of extra sting to the Wests Tigers forward pack with his hard hitting defence.

Under Head Coach Tim Sheens, Ellis has also developed into a fine ball player and scored some fine tries last season in running angles off five-eighth Benji Marshall.

An ankle injury suffered in round one has limited the Great Britain international to just 3 appearances this season.

Tonight’s match against the Brisbane Broncos at the Sydney Football Stadium will be Ellis’ third consecutive appearance after returning against Souths a fortnight ago.

On that night, he played 63 minutes, made 10 runs for 83 metres and made 23 tackles. Against the Gold Coast last Friday night, Ellis played his first full 80 minutes for 2011, making 90 metres in 11 runs and making 29 tackles.

“I knew I was close to playing 50 games so it is good to be achieving this in a home game in hopefully in front of a large crowd,’’ Ellis said.

“It would also be nice to score a try to open my account for the season.”

Happy 50th Gaz!

Champion player. Missed a big tackle last week but in a couple of games he will be in top form. The best backrower in the game.
