The most interesting point from the Wests Tigers trial win over the Roosters is that they played their best football when youngster Jock Madden replaced Luke Brooks in the halfback role.

No club needed a trial match victory as much as Michael Maguire’s team in a huge confidence booster for round one against a Melbourne Storm team without Cameron Munster, Harry Grant and Brandon Smith.

Brooks will obviously start in round one but must deliver. Madden showed that he is definitely first grade material.

Madge has backed Brooks his entire tenure at the club. So did Ivan Cleary who got the best out of him. Brooks is halfback again in a season where Madge desperately needs overall team improvement or he's possibly shown the door.....why would he risk losing his job if he didn't think Brooks can play?

It's about time people realise we just don't have the cattle, probably haven't for a long time..but hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel very soon

Yes, he did play well under Cleary, because he was surrounded with experienced footballers.
Brooks has shown more courage than Matt Orford, who wouldn’t go to Souths on a massive contract. His reasoning..”I’m only one man.”

I agree but to me that means nothing. Players need to prove themselves regularly. We have options in the halves. The best performing players should be picked.

I'm not writing Brooks off and I figure he gets first shot. He needs to perform though because Hastings, Doueihi and Madden all want a spot.

Agree mate although might prove a case for him to be a 14. If we lost in the 60 minutes and need a change of direction he could be good to get him on.

I think he is a much better 7 then 6.

Simplifying it a bit but there are running halves like Cody Walker and organizing halves like Adam Reynolds. Madden is an organizing half.

He reminds me of Luke Keary.

The pressure will come off Brooks if we start winning - until then he will have to wear it just like the coach, and like Farah /Benji did before him. Nothing more can be said about him that hasn't already been said whether your for, or against him. The one thing that is clear who ever wears the crown for blame, history will show getting rid of one man makes little difference while others equally responsible remain and change is not effected.
