Benji Marshall Hits The FOX SPORTS Commentary Box As Fans Gear Up For An Epic 2022 NRL Season

The former league legend reveals his excitement at joining the FOX LEAGUE family – complete with his own talk show!

As we gear up for another massive 2022 winter sporting season, jam-packed with fan favourites NRL, AFL, Supercars, Formula 1 and the addition of Super Netball to the mix, there are plenty of new recruits making headlines. But FOX LEAGUE has one of its own with recently retired NRL great Benji Marshall joining Australia’s only dedicated rugby league channel.

Having hung up the boots from the NRL at the end of last season, Marshall brings his wealth of experience and insight to FOX LEAGUE, having achieved everything in the game during his distinguished playing career.

Speaking at today’s 2022 FOX LEAGUE launch at CommBank Stadium in Parramatta – after making quite the entrance in the FOX SPORTS chopper, no less – Marshall says he is excited to be joining the best rugby league broadcasting team in the business.

“I played footy for a long time, and I wasn’t always sure what my life would look like post-footy, so to have this opportunity at FOX LEAGUE excites me,” he tells FOXTEL Insider.

“It is a great team with some of the best players to have ever played the game, also with expert journalists who have key opinions on rugby league. For me, it is a family atmosphere, and I love the camaraderie.”

Want to know more about your favourite sports returning? Marshall brings his innate knowledge of the game and relaxed presentation style to Benji, a new half-hour show airing Monday nights on FOX LEAGUE during the NRL season. As host of this studio show, he will chat to current players to peel back the layers of their personalities and give fans insight into their thoughts on the current state of rugby league life.
When you see most players on TV, it’s in a very interview-type tone and I want to strip that back on the couch and have genuine conversations about issues in the game,” he says. “I really want to encourage more current players to express their views.”

Fans of NRL 360 will be no stranger to Marshall’s honest approach, having been a regular panellist on the FOX LEAGUE NRL show during the past couple of years.

“Fans connect with the players and want to know them on another level, not just a footy level,” he explains. “Hopefully my show will give them the chance to see their favourite players in that light. [Benji] will have a relaxed vibe each Monday night after NRL 360 – half an hour, which is nice and cruisy.”

Starting out as a prodigious teenager for Wests Tigers, Marshall is famous for leading the joint-venture club all the way to the 2005 NRL premiership, with his legendary flick pass to Pat Richards an unforgettable piece of grand final folklore.

From his NRL debut in 2003 to hanging up the boots after representing the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the 2021 grand final, Marshall enjoyed an outstanding career, amassing 346 first-grade games, representing New Zealand 31 times and winning a World Cup with the Kiwis.

During his journey, Marshall inspired kids to watch and play rugby league, however, after 19 years at the top, he is content in retirement and looking forward to his new role behind the microphone.

“I’m loving retirement,” he says. “You don’t realise how switched on your brain always is when playing, but when you let it all go, it’s a weight off the shoulders.

“I could’ve easily kept on playing, but the way I’m feeling now, I’m very happy with my decision. Now I get to work Monday night on my show, Tuesday night on NRL 360 and the FOX LEAGUE panel on weekends.

“I feel blessed to do this job. It’s not a typical nine-to-five career. I can take my kids to school, which I couldn’t do when playing footy,” he continues, adding: “Working at FOX LEAGUE is a great opportunity to share my opinions and help current players on my show talking about the things they want to talk about.”

Benji actually speaks really well, better than the other fox cronies and I think has a big future in media, fox sports has already twigged to that.

Funny as it may seem...
It certainly suggests other "issues" at play!!

Driving un-regoed, un-insured carrying on like a prune in court isn't something
everyday folk do.
