LIVE GAME Live Game Thread v Newcastle *Spoilers*

Live Game Discussion
Being at the game yesterday. It's actually worse watching this lot live then on TV as you get a true appreciation for how much of a rabble they are. There doesn't appear to be any game plan, or if there is, Brooks as halfback and captain is definitely not delivering it. Our edge defence is a joke.

The only guy who looks to have any attacking game sense or craft is Hastings. On current form, he's AD's halves partner when he's recovered.

Madge needs to go for a modern coach with modern ideology.

Just watched the presser. How the hell is Ken captain? Barely makes sense when he speaks and can’t articulate what he means. This is the man Madge choose to lead the team. Madge just says the same crap he said last year how he sees how hard we work and knows we are better. It’s round 2 if we aren’t turning up now when do we start?
Yes. I've just watched it as well and your comments nailed it.

I thought the same exactly.....

It was much worse than the TV showed.

Brooks kicking for touch and gaining only 10m each time.

No talking between the players.
Nofo still blaming others.

We're in a very bad place and this is an incredibly dark time for the Tigers but more so for the fans.

I think the main issue was fundamental poor errors and an inability to pick ourselves up from some misfortune. I don't think it has much to do with gameplan or attacking structures at all.

The team isn't good enough to get heavily on the back foot and reliably fight back into a match like a Melbourne Storm. We gave Knights, what, 65-75% of the ball in the first half, and 80% of the sets where we finally retained possession we couldn't even get to our kicks, and it wasn't even one or two players to blame. E.g. Ken must have dropped 5 bombs yesterday after being spectacular last week, but it was also Hastings, Musgrove, Offa, Jet... just fundamentals across the park.

That extends to simple things like chasing all kicks. First try Laurie played the ball not the man, and yeah it was a fluky bounce, but he misjudged that he was going to be beaten for the ball and his instinct was to try a 1/100 ball steal rather than delay one second then affect a tackle. It wasn't a simultaneous contest, Clifford beat him comfortably to a ball that bounced straight up in the air.

And then Hastings worrying more about blocking chasers than actually contesting the football, and nobody picking up that Laurie had been dragged across field defending the previous tackle.

Tyrone Peachey... well clearly he's a top-shelf moron and that will keep him from truly recognising his talent for the remainder of his career. My mate is a Sharks supporter and he messaged me: "here comes Peachey on, how long until he does something moronic?" And I laughed, and he actually managed not to do something stupid for a short while, before giving away a sin bin in the dumbest of all possible circumstances.

You only need watch him smirk at the camera after trying a dumb grubber-chase when down by 20 points and the side struggling, to know where his mind is at.

So IMO it's very hard to judge the performance after about 30 mins, because by that stage we were gassed and had no fight left. That's just the reality of it. The bench is not dynamic or experienced and our attack depends solely on a good platform, because Brooks isn't creative enough to produce something from nothing. DCE has the same problem at Manly - he's quite good in a good team, and also decent when supporting stars like Turbo carving up, but he's useless when his forwards are being dominated, and he's the incumbent Australian HB.

There was zero platform because the forwards were tired not just tacking, but having to constantly race back to defend errors. Then when we made a few decent line breaks, everyone was busted or tired or both. E.g. watching Jet hobble around the field all match, but some how breaking into a fantastic run when given some space. Watching Gildart being given the ball too early by Hastings and not having the stamina or confidence to take the fullback on.

The most disappointing thing, and typical thing also unfortunately, is not that it was a very poor effort from the entire side for almost 80 minutes, but that it's only 1 week from quite a competent performance against Melbourne. And I'm not talking about the quality of the opposition, i.e. who was in or out, but just about competing hard for 80 mins, which is what Tigers fans really want as the basic output, before the wins finally come.

Tigers were very poor against Manly in the trial, but played a lot of subbies, then were quite good against the Roosters, then were perhaps a little bit better again against Storm (without knowing how to close the match out), then absolutely abhorrent against Knights, as if we can't string 3 or 4 decent performances together.

I don't know what the answer is. I am not against dumping the coach, and I am going to guess they have KPIs in place for 2022 after all the speculation last year; but also I see very few replacement coaching options. This is not just a coach issue, it's a roster and club culture issue, clearly, because we've swapped coaches often enough, and the last bloke we had, only managing 42% win rate with us, has only LOST 4 games of footy since COVID started.

But why

Why do they play so well againdt Melbourne...hold our own against a heavy weight team for 60 odd minutes

And then come and put on a shit show performance against a team which was easily beatable

The main issue is talent. We can get up for a game or two but we don't have the talent to do it consistently.

Our halfback is also not the guy that we require. We are a dud team. We need guys that execute well consistently. Brooks can tackle and he can do a lot of things at an okay level. We need a lot better than that.

We also have a pretty dud spine atm. Hastings in my opinion was fantastic. He made a terrible tackle and he has to get that crap out of his game but he also takes the game on and has an impact. Laurie is a small fullback that isn't clicking at all. He has heart and he tries but he needs a dominant team around him. Brooks is very similar. Simpkin has played well the last 2 weeks but he would be up there with the worst dummy halves in the game. Simpkin is young and to be fair he was making tackles and his service on the whole was okay.

We have basically 3 spine players who are poor. That needs to change.
