Michael Maguire leaves club

I knew 2 blokes that coached junior footy.
One played at a good level when he was a kid, did his junior level certificates, etc . . . . and his team were full of fairly talentless kids who's mothers strived for them to get the participation trophy in their sports year between violin and tutoring.
The other was a guy that barely played as a kid, never coached before, no certificates but watches the game . . . . and his team had 3 or 4 real good players in it, with the remainder having a fair idea of the game.
Guess which team made the semi's every year, and which team ran bottom 2 ?
I think that any 3 or 4 of us here could combine to coach the riff to the finals.
Because they have the players to achieve it regardless of the coach.
We don't.
It's not the coach.
And that means any coach, unless it's Jack Gibson, is severely limited by this roster. Severely.
It's the players, not the coach.
If Madge isn't using the bench to your liking, in the big picture, what's the difference ? We only have those players. if you play Jack first, then Bob second . . . it's still Jack and Bob.
I was going to ask what everyone expects to happen when Madge is punted.
Somehow, and I can't believe this, but somehow you all ignore the fact that it's just gonna be a repeat of what we've had happen in the last 10 years of the coaching merry-go-round.
You can get the drug injection supervisor "student of the game" Flanno here, and no matter what he studies, if his players don't have the brains/speed/talent/desire/smarts to do what he asks, then what the hell do you think he is going to change ?
Save these posts so we can just copy and paste in 2-3 years time.
Only the names will change.
Not that there's anything wrong in playing the violin. 😉

Good question. Was this always the case ? Was this what he was employed to do ? Is this a regular report to the board ?

There was a comment in relation to these reviews happening all the time in the business world. It's sort of true but not an ad-hoc review. You'd think someone would have to ask for an ad-hoc review.

Wonder what the motive is to announce it.

Wests Tigers are a poisoned wheel. They start off by have money to spend on class players but the class players don't want to come to the club because the club is near shambles with their record of win/lose results and it management structure. So the class players show their back to the Wests tigers despite the big money offered to them.

The coach and management, especially Pascoe and Madge need to be put on very severe notice and if they don't like it they can leave and the club. The club has hit near rock bottom so why stick for more years with current players, management and coach who have shown throughout their years at at the club that they are not up to it. This club needs a huge freshen up.

If they can't buy players with the hug money they have to spend they should donate it to a Charity rather than spend it on more run of the mill players who will continue the club's travel with the poison wheel.
What a great post.
Reminded me of when the Joint Venture first took shape, with added $$$ to build a competitive squad - and look what happened. Factions had too much influence and nothing had vision.
Apart from Sheens era, nothing has changed and we're still doing the same things.
Culture starts at top and from within.
Too many back slapping and not enough with acumen.
We need to have an honest look in the mirror and stop blaming scapegoats.

Wonder what the motive is to announce it.
I may be totally wrong but it shows Sheens has been doing his job this past 6 months including evaluating total football operations. I would not be surprised if the outcomes of the review include:

- Solidifying Madge's future at least until the end of his current contract (gives potential signings assurance of coaching).
- Addresses a few concerns of match day coaching (i.e. managing the interchange).
- Addresses a few concerns of high performance (particularly injuries & COE delays).
- Pathway for our elite youth (incentives, contracts, warding off rivals).
- Recruitment targets.
- Captaincy & leadership group.

Madge can't attract a player. Even from his souths days or coach of NZ. Sure we have landed some up and comers but no big names. Even paying overs we can't Jag one . Suspect chriton from the roosters has knocked us back too, a player he coached.

Some people on hear will say oh but look at the dogs how are the marquee traveling there.. well we won't know how they will go here because we can't get one... We need a big name to transform us otherwise it's a slow burn. Add 3 more yrs to 10 yrs of failures. Supporters deserve a winning team..
Is that Madge, or the club as a whole ?
If the coach is an absolute A-hole, but the club is nice . . . nobody wants to play under the A-hole.
If the club is a mess, but the coach is a nice bloke . . . nobody will want to come to a mess of a club. A bit of a shame, coz the coach is a good bloke.
We don't attract quality players coz our club is a rabble, and we lose more than we win.
We lose more than we win coz we have ordinary players.
We have ordinary players coz we can't attract quality players.

Knockbacks can also be a reflection of attempting to not "pay overs". There's a very big difference between offering a fair contract and offering an obscene one, which logically must have a large impact on final decisions.

We only need to look at Bulldogs to see what can happen when you offer obscene contracts. Bulldogs simply cannot be argued to be a significantly better value proposition than Tigers in 2022/23.

Certainly, Bulldogs made the finals much more recently than Tigers (2016), but they've been well out of finals contention for the past 5 seasons, including second last and last in the past two seasons.

Despite some big-profile signings for 2022, Bulldogs are still last and have now sacked their coach, which puts them back almost at square-one.

If the rumours are to be believed, Dogs now have an issue to register their next big-name signings (Mahoney and Kikau) due to cap issues. Bulldogs allegedly shopping around Luke Thompson, and they are paying high-profile recruits who are not providing required output - JAC, TPJ, Dufty, Flanagan. It must be noted that Bulldogs outbid Tigers on both JAC and TPJ in contested bidding in 2021, which was fairly derided by some Tigers fans, and is now proving to be somewhat of a lucky miss for us.

So - Bulldogs outbid Tigers on several occasions, gambled with risky signings in non-key positions, and it's provably not paying off. The coach has taken a bullet for the trouble.

And in that respect, being turned down on certain high-value contracts ends up being a good thing for struggling clubs.

Then, being turned down for fair offers is, in some respects, also a good thing. It sucks that reputation alone doesn't convert all your fair offers, but at least you aren't making obscene offers in desperation, and you aren't setting yourself up for long-term pain.

I'd rather Tigers make 20 fair offers and execute 2, than make 5 obscene offers and get them all.
....and JAC is paying the price by missing SOO by playing in a shite fight imo.

Point is we brought Madge in a dual premiership winning coach to change our fortunes and to bring some star power. Fact is We have gone backwards each year under his tenure.. we have progressively slipped down the ladder.

And changing the coach( with the same roster) will do what, exactly ?
Put us at the start of another 4 year re-build ?
We are forgetting that most of us accepted 2022 was going to be a lean year.
And the explosion of the last few days was triggered by a second half shithouse performance on the back of a first half defensive effort against 287 set re-starts.
If Madge had a quality first grade team, we'd be doing much better.
If a quality first grade team had any other coach, they'd be doing much better.
It's not the coach. Well, let me re-phrase that . . . it's 90% the players, and 10% the coach

West Tigers can' hardly get one good player.
Hastings,AD.Luciano,Ken M,Nadden,Offa along with Api and Papi ALL say hello great to be here....

Further to my post...
Hastings out for 3 weeks suspended, last 2 games playing injured =5 games not 100%
AD the King our best player =still in the grandstand
Luci our best back rower, last game under par,may have a niggle,
Ken M has been playing on one leg for weeks..
Nadden been here 2 games and shows great ability for us..
Offa ex SOO player doing very well this year..
Api SOO player..
Papi best back rower in 2022,

And if you consider Laurie just getting back from a broken leg, then cops a knee injury and has just come back...
AJ just coming back from knee injury ..
Noffa concussed and disiplinary issues...
Steff back from injury,
Blore still in the grandstand..
Musgrove and Tamou doing well....

BUT all people want to do is get rid of the bloke who cares more about his players and the club than any one else and is a premiership coach with all things going wrong for him this year....unbelievable....if he goes not only hasnt the club learnt from its mistakes but also the fans are fickle no end....

The Tigers have won only six of their past 23 games under Maguire and currently sit in 15th place on the ladder, having won only three games this season.
I find this quote odd, and it's been repeated at least once. 6/23 wins. Why the last 23?

Well the answer is if you extend it to the last 29 matches then it becomes 10/29, which is bad but doesn't look quite as bad as "6". There's a magical quality, for some reason, of achieving 10 of something, as if it's much more than 9.

Which is of course retarded, because if you back further again, past that purple patch of 4/6 wins, you get another 1/7 to start 2021, which then makes it 11/36 wins, which is still dreadful.

Just odd the journos chose the past 23 to show dreadful. Madge's entire Tigers record is dreadful, and extensive.
