Incoming Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall has wasted no time trying to recruit talent, while some of the club’s current stars aren’t expected to play under him.

Marshall, who will replace Tim Sheens as the Tigers coach in 2025, has already approached Eels halfback Mitchell Moses about a return to Concord.

Sheens has handed control of the roster to Marshall and the latter must decide who stays between Adam Doueihi, Luke Brooks and Jackson Hastings - who all want to play in the halves.

NRL 360 host Braith Anasta asked the panel on Wednesday night who Marshall will be trying to sign first.

“He’s already gone after Mitch Moses,” Paul Kent responded.

“Sheens has put him in charge of their roster and their cap at the moment, he’s making him have a good look at that because good coaching comes down to good recruitment.

“Wayne Bennett said for years the best coaches are the best recruiters, that’s the secret. So first cab off the rank for Benji is to learn that, look at the roster, work out where you’re getting value for money and where you don’t.

“At the moment he’s got Doueihi, Brooks, Hastings all sitting there trying to get three into two.

“He has to figure out what he’s going to do there and as the long term coach of the club he has to come up with an answer.”

Veteran rugby league reporter Brent Read doesn’t expect all three of those players to be at the club next season.

“I spoke to Tim today about it, they’re all November 1 guys so if they’re not extended by then, they’re in the last year of their deals and they can go sign with other clubs.

“Tim said he wants to make a decision on those guys in the next month and that will come down to Benji.”

Sheens will have lunch with Bulldogs general manager Phil Gould on Thursday and Read believes potential player swaps will be on the topics of conversation.

“The one Tigers name that has been linked with the Bulldogs is Jackson Hastings,” Read said.

“If the Bulldogs said we’d love Jackson Hastings I reckon the Tigers would go ‘he’s all yours’.”

Why?
Because he signed a contract with the storm when he'd spent the first few weeks of the comp in ressies while we played Jordan Rankin on the wing in front of him?

He hadn't played first grade with us, Can't blame him for signing with a successful club where he was promised a first grade spot.
That's not accurate. He played 4 first-grade matches before he was announced as a Storm signing (06/Jun/2016).

It's a very straightforward story. Tigers headhunted JAC in 2015 from Sharks Toyota Cup, so obviously they had aspirations for him.

It's not unreasonable that JT selected Rankin as a first-choice winger due to experience and goal-kicking. JAC was only 19 at that time. Rankin got injured and JAC got his chance.

BUT Koroibete signed with rugby and Storm aggressively chased a replacement. The story goes that Tigers were negotiating with extending JAC, Pascoe asked him to wait until he got back from his usual mid-season holiday, but JAC had already done his deal with Storm and it was announced 06/Jun/2016.

The thing for me is despite JAC telling everyone how much of a Tigers fan he and his family were when he was a kid, the guy is a straight-up mercenary. Of course he is allowed to be like that, but don't pretend have special relationships with clubs when it's obviously the dollar-signs that make the big decisions. Despite everything Melbourne did for JAC, he manoeuvred to get an early release on compassionate grounds, to end up taking a big-dollar deal.

Gus has inherited a badly balanced squad with several high priced underperformers at those price tags. Allen and jac(wingers not highest priority for WTs)....Thompson(one or two concussions away from medical retirement)...and a brace of fringe 1st graders which we have plenty of.
Even tpj hasn't been great value
Gus Desperately needs an organising 7...and a full back.
Brooks is not an organiser,so it's Hastings who will be targeted whom I'd rather keep.....and Laurie who will never be a 1st grader imo, whom he can have
Net net..Gus wont offer anyone we really want.....but we mite offload Laurie and Brooks...for whom I'd take almost anyone!
For Hastings...you'd want TPj
