You’ve got to hand it to the Wests Tigers for trying to think outside the square. In line to get the club’s first-ever wooden spoon, the Wests Tigers have hatched a plan to make an audacious play aimed at signing the NRL’s best player – Cameron Munster.
Yes, you read that correctly, the Tigers are going to try and throw their hat in the ring with the Queensland and Australian five-eighth.
The way we’ve heard it the Tigers are talking about making Munster a five-year, $7 million offer aimed at blowing the Melbourne Storm and the Dolphins out of the water.
Fresh off the back of being flogged by 70 by the Sydney Roosters, it’s clear the ailing club needs a circuit breaker signature.
Sure Api Korisau and possibly Isaiah Papali’i will arrive next year but the Tigers are going to need to get a hell of a lot busier in the open market to fix the current plight of the club.
Munster, 27, is precisely the type of key signing who could help stop the rot at Concord.
You can’t blame them for dreaming – remember the Tigers also sounded out Sydney Roosters captain James Tedesco recently – but the chances of it happening are in all likelihood Buckley’s and very little.
The Tigers virtually have an open cheque book to spend for 2024 with a host of top 30 players including Adam Doueihi, Luke Brooks, Jackson Hastings, Daine Laurie, Shawn Blore, Joe Ofahengaue, Alex Seyfarth and Tuki Simpkins all off contract.
Tigers incoming coach Tim Sheens has arguably the greatest challenge of his decorated rugby league career in trying to fix the bun fight that is Concord.
At least the club’s succession plan of Benji Marshall taking over as head coach in 2025 is guaranteed to give the Wests Tigers some pulling power in terms of current players who are off contract.
The last five-year deal the Tigers floated was to incoming Canterbury-Bankstown head coach Cameron Ciraldo.
The risk with this Munster play is it will end with a similar result.
