Wests Tigers chair Lee Hagipantelis insists he has no regrets over the club’s mid-season axing of Michael Maguire and revealed he had apologised to corporate supporters and fans following another season of abject disappointment.

The Tigers finished the 2022 season with the wooden spoon, having won only a handful of games over the course of a tumultuous year that eventually cost Maguire his job.

In his place, the Tigers will start next season with Tim Sheens in charge, part of a succession plan that will eventually see favourite son Benji Marshall take the reins alongside long-time teammate Robbie Farah.

“We can’t put any positive spin on it,” Hagipantelis said.

“It was disastrous as far as results are concerned. I recently spoke at the Kelly Barnes award and proffered my apologies and regret to all of our stakeholders, including our corporate partners and fans and members.

“I think this year’s results were inevitable in the sense that it was the nadir of the last four years. If you look at the last four years we have gone 9th, 11th, 13th and 16th.

“We have now drawn a line in the sand – this is a line-in-the-sand moment. We have taken stock of who we are, what our identity is and what we have to do moving forward.

“There has been a massive injection of Tigers DNA into the club with Tim and Benjji and Robbie. What we need to do is take one step forward on what may be a long journey.

“But we have to work our way out of this and I am confident we will.”

Maguire was the biggest casualty of another underperforming year, although changes are also expected within the playing squad given the way things unfolded.

The Tigers have made an inquiry about Melbourne star Cameron Munster while Marshall has taken the lead role in player recruitment – it is understood he sent texts to the likes of James Tedesco and Mitchell Moses, asking their interest in potentially returning one day.

The biggest decision the club faces in the off-season is over the future of halfback Luke Brooks. Sheens wants him to stay but his future may be dictated by his own desire and whether he craves a fresh start.
The Tigers are preparing for a fresh start of their own, having made the decision in June to part ways with their coach. Asked whether he harboured any regrets over that call – the Tigers barely won a game after Maguire’s departure – Hagipantelis said: “Not for one moment. We had committed to the coaching structure as it was for the entire year.

“Unfortunately circumstances changed and our hand was forced in a sense. We decided we had to move in a completely different direction as far as our culture and identity were concerned.

“You couple that with the results as well and as a board we had no choice but to make what was a difficult decision. We just felt we had to make that decision at that time.”

The decision made, Hagipantelis believes there is reason for optimism. Api Koroisau and Isaiah Papalii will be key recruits next season while the Tigers blooded some youngsters at the back end of the year. Most optimism surrounds their new brain’s trust, which will officially take charge on November 1.

“There is a sea-change,” Hagipantelis said.

“I think Tim, Benji and Robbie are going to sit back and take stock over the next few weeks.

“There has been a lot of work done so far as our recruitment and retention has been done behind the scenes.

“I can’t tell you the number of depth charts and analysis that has been done going back to 15 year olds.

“I think this has been a historic year for all the wrong reasons. I think we have drawn a line in the sand. None of it for one moment demean or diminish the significance of this year’s results.

“We share the pain and disappointment of all the members and fans. We are not immune to legitimate criticism and we take it on board.

“But every decision, every step taken, has been to further the interest of the Wests Tigers only.”
Lee says " every decision ,every step has been taken to further the interest of Wests Tigers ONLY "
So how come you and the board decided that almost all our Cup all the way down to Mathews sides are not called Wests Tigers ???

I find it amazing that the chairmans concludes his recent remarks by saying something that's patently not true

I find it amazing that the chairmans concludes his recent remarks by saying something that's patently not true

Not even remotely true.

These days, one is hard pressed finding anything amongst the official dictates that is correct or survives close scrutiny.

The vast majority of the Decisions have not resulted in outcomes that have furthered the interests of the Wests Tigers.

If they were supposed to, these decisions have failed, resulting in us being the worst side in the comp.

That horrible outcome simply evidences the fact that they have not handled the challenges and that in the broad, the decisions have been rubbish.

When faced with choices, it seems to me that we have chosen the wrong options far too many times.

I’d have more hope if he had argued that the decisions were somehow designed for us to fail or face adversity. Then we would know that they could at least master something.

But saying they were made in our interests sadly, shows up their ineptitude and is an admission of failure.

Even well intended people can fail.

As for losing the spin, most of his statement sounded like spin.

No personal criticism, but it seems to me that they’ve had a good run at it, failed miserably, are likely to continue to do so, already provided the development excuse.

If they care about the club, they should stand themselves down. They should stop the selfish attitude that they are remotely competent, wise or accountable.

Their continued presence and denial to acknowledge and account for years of failure (with more on the way) is deeply embarrassing.

It’s not in the interests of Wests Tigers to appoint a head coach for three years who has never coached a day in his life. I am not saying it’s corrupt, but it seems astonishing.

It is a decision that has the character of faith and expectation as opposed to any reliance on proof and logical, rational and appropriate foundation. Another flip of a card.

That’s my honest opinion.

CEO now into his eighth failed year. Wondering if he gets a free coffee or car wash after 9?
Well he’s a product of the board, does what he’s asked to as I understand it.

The real problem is two fold, the way the board gets elected and their unwillingness to appreciate that they are not a good fit to hold the positions that they do.

The way that entities and organisations survive and prosper is to get the knowledgeable people in the positions making the important decisions.

And our board is entirely dysfunctional based upon our poor and worsening outcomes over years.

Nothing personal but they do not have what it takes to manage an nrl club. They are most likely better at other things. That’s fine and dandy.

The decision to offer Ciraldo full command as a fresh new face was binned as soon as he rejected us, and then all of a sudden, all other candidates who had sent resumes are discarded and it was back to dna bullshit with Tim and GTA Benji.

That is not a consistent position, it is total rebound and knee jerk made on the run.

And where is GTA ? He’s holidaying and being a celebrity flipster in the USA when we haven’t signed a single player in almost 12 months.

Good look GTA, thanks for prioritising us.

I’m sorry but everything is as stuffed up as it was the moment Madge was taken out the back and shot in the back of his head without a replacement.

A stupid decision for which we have paid for very dearly and the practical outcome was the shame and humiliation of the spoon.

And with the spoon now secured, we have to pay overs in every department and suffer the ultimate embarrassment.

And no one on the board is accepting responsibility or being held to account. No one has resigned which means they think they are doing a good job.

We have the spoon, good players wanting out, new signings wanting out, 5 years of misery ahead unless there is meaningful change and what seems to be a $78m white elephant.

Escept for the "white elephant" comment i agree with everything you said. The club is rotten from the head and is decomposing at a heightened rate

Well I’m on the watch like everyone else and I’m more than happy to eat my words if things turn around somehow.

I don’t have any personal or private beef with anyone here who disagrees with me. I hope they live long and prosper.

We are all in this together.

As for the COE, it’s opened and all that, but it hasn’t resulted in any signings or even any promise of a better footy side.

Like having a nice car doesn’t result in you being better at anything.

Us fans and members haven’t seen any benefit in it at all. Ciraldo wasn’t impressed either.

The COE is the main improvement we have made which will make a difference in the future but alone it is not the answer as we need to make drastic changes at the top levels of our administration and board

When GTA got onto the wireless and spoke about his experiences with a rubber vagina in footy showers and tried to paint it all as somehow natural and humorous I drew the conclusion that he had the mental age of a young juvenile.

That he thought it was a good idea to promote himself in this light, put it out in public, indicated to me, that he lacks significant judgment, insight and maturity.

Not a commentary one would ever hear from a first grade coach in the NRL.

He thought it was a great laugh, but I thought it was deeply humiliating and embarrassing.

That we are giving him so much power, control and tens of millions of dollars reflects very poorly on us, as was the way the appointment unfolded.

There’s going to be much more accomplished coaches doing nothing in a few years, watching us zero-

I applaud TSP for calling things as they are . If the bet was have a really nice gym and spa and top players will want to come ? I don't think its working
Ciraldo didn't even want a 5 year huge contract, Tapine signed 4 years $3.5 mill and Blocker said he wouldn't come for over a million per year so 4 years 4.5 mill , Blind Freddy can see how reluctant Papalii is . We still have no signings since Naden and I know must wait till Nov for those contracted to end 2023 but the likes of Tapau and Davey are uncontracted atm .Of more interest would be some budding stars in the top nsw and qld cup sides or the ESL . We are not a desirable destination and that's a fact and the management have presided over this deterioration for years .
That said I'm hopeful the Tim, Benji ,Robbie team can start to turn things around .Hopeful yes Confident no !

Thanks.

It seems we are stuck with the board, so the level under that needs to change radically.

So even if he has been bound by the board, it might be time for Justin to move on.

And it might cost us whatever, but we should be prepared to phase Tim and GTA out much earlier.

Our ridiculous and conceited play for Munster to smooth over us long suffering fans over was a joke.

Especially when we desperately need a pack that will turn up week in and week out.
