Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

He was good at the raiders but reading he hasn't been so good in super league- looked good at world cup.

I was basing the lucky dip statement on that info.

He's probably an upgrade on what we had this year though - Freebairn, Seyf, etc.
I thought he was really good in the WC. Just do not expect Ellis mark 2.

Why does recruitment feel no different to the last 10 years?

It feels a lot better to me. Api and IP plus Klemmer and hopefully Bateman. I should add on Bateman I do have concerns but we need an edge backrower and there have been some positive reports about his form in the world cup.

We will have 4 new players coming into our pack who would make most teams in the NRL.

The recruitment will be justified or criticised by round 10 or so.....weve done nothing on the Park yet
Precisely! I’m giving it until round 15.
The thing is though, we sacked a perfectly good coach who was able to sign 2 gifted GF forwards 12 months ago on a wing and prayer hope that things would improve.
We’re getting close to the end of November, we’re back at training.
We’ve injected a “massive amount of DNA” into the club which “has been working aggressively and diligently “ behind the scenes on a “very forensic” recruitment plan, and coupled with the enormous cap space as you can imagine my expectations went through the roof, but all I see is us picking the low hanging fruit once again.
I don’t want to get too scientific but was the DNA injection better than a total lobotomy? 🤔😂

From CCTW's post this is interesting -

The player unhappy with the Hastings decision is not Laurie.

Hastings will play 7, receive a contract increase and the club afforded him an opp. to return to the NRL. Is the player unhappy because Hastings has been "treated" this way or he wants the same treatment?
It’s most probably Brooks 🤣

Next season, for all intent & purpose, won't be judged by the board as a success or failure imo.

Sheens is in place to install culture & systems while getting Benji up to speed. The results, while I'm sure EVERYONE involved will want them to be good, are probably the secondary goal to the long term success.

I'm not talking with any authority, but I imagine just being more competitive, improvement in individual performance & a clear plan for player progression will be considered a success, more than getting a 50% win ratio etc.

It probably is. He may have even signed a contract that means he will be on reasonable dollars for the next 3 seasons whereas he would have earned much more coin over the next 3 years if the Tigers had let him go to Newcastle.

Which require a coach to release him, Which that coach won't do - And doesn't change what I said.

Also a totally different situation this time around with a 23 year old kid told he wasn't required by the club and had his contract offer pulled - to a 28 year old rep player signing with another club...

You think?
Mate I was joking. I even put /s at the end so no-one would miss it.

Sheens has already created the situation where his tenure won't matter in relation to him keeping his job assuming something drastic doesn't occur.

The problem is I bet we've blown a big chunk of our cap and we don't have any gun players in our outside backs or spine excluding Api. We are going to need to recruit or develop some players to compete for the comp which we should be aiming for.

It's going to be an interesting couple of years. I can't wait for the season to start.

At the very, very least you have to acknowledge it's possible Maguire wasn't a "perfectly good" coach. Identifying what was wrong with the Tigers last year doesn't have to be an either or - it's possible that other things were bad AND Maguire wasn't any use. I guess time will tell: if you're right I imagine he'll be snapped up by another club in due course and go on to be very successful. I have my doubts but I've been wrong before.

I'd be interested to hear who you think the Tigers should have signed. Because you're sort of restricted in who you can sign to (a) players that are available and (b) no-one. Have a look here: https://leagueunlimited.com/news/37529-2023-nrl-player-movements/ Which club would you say is picking up all the players we've missed out on? Because it looks to me like there are about 6-10 genuinely high-profile player moves and we've done two or perhaps three of them. Do you think the Dragons (Liddle, Musgrove and Nick Lui-Toso) feel they've recruited better than the Tigers? How about the Knights (Jack Hetherington, Tyson Gamble, Jackson Hastings and Adam Elliott)? Souths (none)? Or the Storm (Tariq Sims, Joe Chan, Eliesa Katoa and Aaron Pene)?

Going off the most recent update from @CCTW specifically about Blore and Talau, would not surprise me if in the early stages of the season at least, we go with Bateman assuming he signs and either Blore or Talau in the backrow. Papali'i at 13 give the kid (Matamua) a bit more time to develop and bring him along slowly. Papali'i speculated he wanted to play through the middle anyway.
