FIFA World Cup thread

We gave the number 3 in the world a real scare towards the end. Very proud of the boys considering what people were saying of the chosen squad.

Can a soccer fan please explain to me why a goal keeper wouldn't kick the ball down field away from your own goal area, second Argentina goal was avoidable?????

His name is Mat Ryan .
He usually has one customary cluster per game .

Australia struggle to get even a portion of even share of possession ......it would have been based around that ...horror call though

This is the moment when I missed a breath.
What almost was.
I could see extra time.
I could see a penalty shoot out after that.
Then I saw the Grey Wiggle do his thing.
And you know what, we were through to the World Cup semi finals, 2022.
(Well it was a breath that seemed to last an eternity.....!!)

Playing the ball from the back creates space down field. Less defenders in their own half means more space and attacking opportunity. Most our best passages forward were created by playing through Ryan. The best teams over the last decade play this way. It involves risk and high skill but is quality way to play. If Ryan boots it down field we give up possession and Argentina continues to build pressure, wearing down the team. If he holds the ball and plays out from the back it potentially generates an attacking opportunity for us. Down 1-0 he went high risk option. Obviously the wrong decision but these mistakes happen. We even saw it down the other end a few times. Big mistake, he'll be shattered, but I don't think he deserves to be savaged.

That's true but it's a moot point when you have a defender on the ball it's safety first before worrying about any attacking opportunity.

I’ll defer to the more knowledgeable on this but it’s seems crazy to me!
Yeah, it's hard to rationalise it when we have the league way of looking at it in our head.
For soccer, to try and simplify it, imagine putting the ball in the smallest cube shaped box that the ball fits in. This box is made of 0.5mm thick material. The edge of the box has to be clear of the line before the ball is out.
But again, it seems odd when you consider the league way of doing it.
With a size 5 soccer ball, I'd guess that there's maybe 110 - 120mm between absolute bottom and absolute edge of the ball . . . so it's a lot of grey area !

Well if we had a mountain to climb against Denmark, it was only a hill compared to what lay ahead.
All we can aak is another monster effort, but eliminating the first 1/2 hour which wasn’t great.
If we start like that again it will be 2-0 before we warm up. But that’s past."
Armies job, again, is to make them believe ! The bodies will be aching but if he can get inside their heads then who knows.
They tried hard but invariably the cream rises to the top. We had a super run and to make the final 16 and get a goal in every game gives the team something to build on for the future.
Congrats and thank you Arnie, you and your team did us proud !

I'll trust you on this
