John Bateman #268

Bateman won’t be playing in the lower grade .. bad look to have a marquee player in the lower grade especially if he gets injured .. critics will have a field day .. !!

Bench round 1 most likely .. liked what I saw from Blore on the weekend against the Raiders .. big strong and aggressive .. makes think that Bateman will be our lock (8) when he starts .. ?? More the Wayne Pearce style at lock .. 🙂
Bad look?
What will be said?

He's been "dropped"? 🤣
Laughable... It was be perfectly acceptable & understandable if he started in Reggie's to get match fitness... Only know nothing's would make a deal out of it

Finnzo, the only thing Bateman will need is match fitness, nothing beats it,he is a professional athlete and has probably done miles and miles of running, pumping iron and stretching exsercises while waiting to come here...I reckon he is straight on the bench for 20 mins stints in the first couple of weeks...just my opinion mate this way he wont be rushed to play 80 straight off the bat....
I was thinking more about him gelling with the team he has litrally never met a lot of our team to just throw him in there after a week and a half is a pretty big call

Bateman is a pro same as his team mates it wont take long for them to get on with their jobs,he knows the game he probably knows the older experienced recruits as well, from what I can gather he has had video link ups and watched the game plans and what Sheens expects of him...I think it will be ok ...time will tell...

Speaking of 13...
That's where I'd like to see him.
Perfect build for the modern 13, Also wouldn't be the first Edge to move to the middle after a couple hundred games.
I think he can offer us something in the middle that we're missing...
Joe and Twal as Props only - Filling in if required....
But my 13's for 2023 would be Bateman and Pole....
I suggested this too a while back
Some didn't like it.

Looks like a Sheens like 13... Fulton like.

Hard to argue with that.

Bateman is a pro and just played in a WC so he knows his body and if his ready.
IMO he is on the bench for a few weeks for fitness but as a player he will be chomping to play.
This is the guys I'm excited about as he is just a competitor.

I thought Bateman to 13 was stupid because we've had dud edge players for years and now we have 2 gun edge players but I'm warming to it. It might give us a difference in the middle of the park plus he has some mongrel.

Yes, I think I’d like to see him test drive the 13 jumper and see how it goes.

A 13 still needs to get through a mountain of work, I would be hesitant to have Bateman there all year. I agree he offers much more than Joffa or Twal but I think ultimately Matamua will take the reigns at some point this season.
Edit. Not worried about Batemans engine more his durability, he's here for 4 years...

I think that's a good point. Playing big minutes in the middle, into your thirties, is hard to do.

I'm also ignorant on his passing ability. He doesn't carry a tag of having poor hands by any means, but the accuracy and pass selection and particularly the the ability to do so whilst in motion, is a key component of the modern, linking 13 role. I'm not sure whether he has, or hasn't got that in his arsenal.

Whereas the likes of Pole, Matamua or even a Fainu seem to, or at least, seem to have the capacity to further develop their ability to, be strong in this area.

I think a strong passer and pass selector as a modern 13 is a key aspect when choosing one. You could almost liken it to a 5/8th-type, but playing in the middle.

Bateman to start as 13 with Matamua off the bench seems like a viable option. Bateman to do the tough stuff early as well as playing some link work, then Matamua coming on when the game opens up. If required, Bateman then can do back rower role if required during the game (to replace Blore or IPap).
Joe O, Pole, Twal, James, Simpkin and Kepoea to fight it out for other three bench spots.
BTW, who needs another ball playing forward when you have the silky hands and crisp passing of David Klemmer (ie the new 'world's biggest halfback)?

Gee, that sounds like Hastings 🤣

Is he ready and will he ever be ready ? If he is ready who do you drop from the team ?
Still waiting for this guy to show his wares. Maybe I’m cynical but there comes a time when the rubber needs to hit the road.( and no, I never saw him play in the lower grades ).
I hope it’s soon, same with Bula ( who I would consider for a wing spot) where many top class fullbacks started their 1st grade careers.

After watching that game on the weekend, I think kepoea is way ahead of matamua , none are great ball players at this stage , but I was really taken with kepoea and his hard running and his work rate in defence, think he will push hard for
