John Bateman #268

Shawn Blore is way ahead of Twal.
Blore was terrific in the trial
How many times has Twaly been stopped a meter or two before the line? It’s almost as if that line has become like a reinforced brick wall?
Does he need to change the way he sees the try line?
Maybe he needs to focus more on the centre of the “in goal area” similar to the method used to karate chop a brick?

I find this interesting. Twal offloaded twice, made over 100mtrs including a half break and his tackle rate was great - he kept the middle tight. Twal for me was the pick of the bench players hands down.

Blore plays a different role and position to Twal. Blore did have a good game also. Both should be on the bench round 1.

Change is coming.
Twal did 2 offloads - 2!!! In a single trial.
That was twice as many a he did in 13 games last season.

Ideally they're both in the 17 hey...

Both important pieces of the puzzle for us in 2023.

I’m struggling to see where Joe O fits into the 17 baring injuries.
He was one of our best last year.
I think I’ve mentioned this a few times,
Joffa is still around but standing out in a badly beaten side is always easier than if you have a much stronger unit.
I’m sure he will get a go but not quite as heavily as some on here would have you believe.
We’ve heard him mentioned as captain, no 13 , etc.
He, imo, just doesn’t have that break the game open quality.

It’s Friday and still no Bateman , also not a word from the club , no wonder all the other teams laugh at us . How hard is it to give ur fans a update

That because Twal has no power, he's one of the softest runners of the football in the history of the NRL.

That's why he should almost never get passed the ball in the opposition 20. You know as soon as the ball's in his hands he's going to meander to teh defence, get dominated and get a very slow play the ball. Only if we're in a mess and just need someone to take a settler should he ever see the ball in the 20, and even then i wouldn't pass it to him if there were other options who can play the ball faster.

He is a seasoned professional, has great footwork at the line and a smart offload. In defence he is a tireless worker and hits hard. He will be an addition to the new recruits not a subtraction. Having the new guys around him will only help his game as he won’t be on his own. He is second picked after Klemmet at either Prop or lock for mine.

Come on Twal is more than a plodder. He is a fitness machine. I’d say he doesn’t get over the line because he is not used to being in that position, his job is to make meters and push forward after contact, not dive and squirm or bust through. I reckon this season we’ll see him get through on a face ball from dummy half or a short ball off Doueihi running further out wide.

I like simpkin on the bench.. defence was our biggest problem last year obviously.. saw him make 5 tackles in a row in the last trial.. good cover for Api and the middle forwards especially late in the game and with the concussion rule as it is..
Bates won't play till round 4-5 TBH.

Blore starts on the edge

Bench consists of:

Simpkin
Joffa
Twal
Pole

He's got his stregnths sure, but none of them are valuable in the opposition 20. Yet he seems to touch the ball there more than any of our other forwards.
If you're 5m out from the line and have Pole, Stefano and Twal outside you, Twal is not the player you give the ball to hoping to score.

He's due to eventually be in the right place at the right time and Api may be the one to get him crashing over. And sometimes i think he gets passed the ball so much simply because he hasn't scored before, and his team mats are trying to give him every opportunity to do so. But he needs to be put in a hole, he won't create one.
