Luke Brooks #167

It wasn't so much marking up. GC ran a block play off a quick play the ball and the defence was compressed. Douhie let Foran run to him giving him plenty of time to do what he wanted and picked up Fifita inside of TT. As soon as AD committed to Foran TT should have mirrored that and come in for Fifita (which should have shut it down). If Foran went over the top Nofa was 1 on 3 and would have had to take the ball receiver and rely on Laurie and our Kelpies to cover. It was a lack of effort play from AD with a shocking read by TT. Nofa was in the right place and was ready to take the 3 in attacker.

Was blore injured at that point?

I like your positivity. AD again showed really poor game management because he was kicking early in the tackle count way too often. I'm fine with the goal kicking - that will happen.

Brooks is a good runner of the footy and he made good metres but those mistakes and lack of ability to create at critical moments in the attacking zone is a massive issue. It's why Brooks is a secondary play maker. He isn't that good. He has to get those clangers out of his game but he is at the backend of his career.

I like Laurie and he has his moments but I can't see him making it as a first grade fullback.
Earl you do post some good comments,I have been critical of Brooks on many occasions and I also was very, very disappointed on Sunday with his performance, however, emotions aside because I did expect us to win the game because of the trial win against the Raiders,in the scheme of things he has had a lot of time off because of injury and a limited preseason because of rehab...
Iam more than willing to give him all the support he needs to truly show us that he can be the halfback we always were expecting him to be,he has some great forwards to work with and once he and Api get fit and free from injury I think the team will be awesome...We need very few injuries and keep the top 17 out there as much as possible.
I have said it before and I will say it again, fully fit Luke has speed and his defense is good, all he needs is to hone his passing skills and kicking game...In my opinion he needs to be a lot more confident,AD has to learn not to do it all himself, its a team game and concentrate on your own job first and let the other players do theirs, thats how the great teams do it..
Finally as many others have said it was game one,now its up to the team and coaches to iron out the mistakes made on Sunday and find better ways to convert attack into points...

Brooks makes the effort plays which is commendable and is possibly the reason why in a team that continually disappoints that coaches persist with him - even when he doesn't fulfill the role he is supposed to at a level to make a real difference.

Good analysis. I don't know if you are right but I'm not doubting you. I honestly couldn't see it. I bolded the part that has been an issue for those two guys.

He came off soon after that. I assumed it was a hooking for a bad read but it was a HIA.
Blore had nothing to do with that try, was a terrible read from Talau.

Edit: just saw @Jolls post.

Edit 2: watching it again, we got caught out by the quick play the ball and it was a 5 on 3 that we had to defend.
Was going to be difficult to defend either way so it’s a hard one to judge in this instance.

I think what makes us good in attack is they had AD running first receiver drag defenders in and Brooks out wide with some pace and linking with naden. Once we cut out the dropped ball e.g. Brooks drop ball and stef we will score points. I like Laurie chiming in to the backline I just don't like him under the high ball

Dont recall and the replay doesn't show the inside players clearly. The quick play the ball was the catalyst but poor reactions and reads led to the try.
All I could see AD had the man with the ball. Talau went for the guy out the back and not the ball runner that ran straightthrough.

Don't know where blore was

Blore commits to Liu here who then passes out the back to Foran.

Doueihi commits to Foran but Talau doesn't see the short pass to Fifita coming and commits to taking Brimson out the back.

Fifita went through untouched as a result.

It was a 5 on 3 so he had to make a decision one way or another and he went the wrong one, unfortunately.

Ah yep, cheers, blore left them very short.

I saw it differently.

Was worse read from AD in my view. He didn’t even make an attempt really on Foran and was ball watching. Somehow he ended up inside then outside of Foran but facing away from Fafita as well. He didn’t call out correction in defensive structure gaps and numbers from the tackle before. Laurie is fault here as well but AD defends 3 in and is the more senior player. Our communication sucked.

TT had 3 people outside him with Fafita on his inside & Foran straightening. The Titans drew us in and we fell for it. Foran masterclass. TT had a split second to react to Foran, Fafita or the pass out the back.

For that try the biggest issue was we didn’t number up. It was a 6 on 4 at the play the ball our forwards compressed to mid field giving the Titans half a field to work with. Nofo was 15mtrs + infield, AD was 30mtrs in, Blore was defending middle of the park.

Could TT & AD of handled that differently - Yes but the Titans don’t have the space if our defensive structure was set correctly in the 1st place. This probably falls more on Laurie at the back & AD to call out the number/space miss alignment that blaming a miss. If Foran does the long ball everyone blames Nofo (when Fafita gets the ball he has 3 outside him) but the inside players compressed so far infield TT really had a low % chance to be a success in this situation.

Sorry dumb question, but does Brooks have a contract for 2024? He is playing for a new contract this year? (I know the news is that he will be extended on less money, especially if Moses arrives).

I think Moses will drag out as long as he can and maybe by then we will all see whether brooks is even worth having with him or not (and as if Moses doesn’t see Brooks is a dud ..: and if keeping brooks to get Moses and losing douhie is the answer I’m not sold at all)

We need a Trindall or O’Sullivan next to douhie right now.

I'm not sure how clear cut this one is. Where for instance was Blore ? It was his opposite number that made a bust.
