Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

The market place will determine what Brooks is worth and will bear no resemblance to what we on the forum think. At present we have one broken no6 on our books for next year, The Raiders need a 6, Payten rates Brooks, the Chooks need a 7, Dogs need a six or seven, the coast could do with a 7 and the dragons may need a seven.

Brooks is not their solution

Couldn’t see any top eight side picking him in the 17. He’s probably cheap so not the worst bloke to have deep in your 30 but he’s not a guy whose taking us up the ladder.
The sooner he is upgraded and moved on for a proper nrl player the better. His nickname is flippers around our house, and that nickname started on his first game where he dropped the ball with the line wide open. A few games later he did it twice off Benji. He has been a complete liability since arriving, then it turns out he couldn’t see and needed eye surgery. How long had he been hiding his impaired vision and taking this club for a ride.
Get rid of him asap.

Why offer a 2 year extension, offer him 1 year why Sheen’s is head coach giving benji another year to make his mind up if Brooks is one of the halves he wants when he takes the reigns, you never know another option might come out of nowhere in the next 12 months.
Its amazing how all players raise their performance in their final year of a contract.
Most players do lift when their livelihood is on the line. Noffa is a perfect example. But maybe his game has improved due to a good pack and Api getting him on the front foot. The coaches have simplified his game and playing to his strengths. Have a listen to the Matty Johns Podcast and what Cronk has to say. If he plays like this, like Jedi said he is worth 750k minus the long serving discount and i would try resign Wakeman for 250k. Brooks is back to his best, not sure what his line breaks and line break assist stats are, he his kicking well and strong in defence.

Which Aussie club is paying him more than 600? If we pay 700 we’ve been dudded again.
we are paying AD 600k or so, 700k is probably the new normal for a half who plays every week tbh.
Canberra to replace wighton
Dogs ?
Dragons ?
Plus u.k. which he won't go to but hey they will still throw in an offer for leverage.

The options if you.dint re-sign Brooks, Frawley, Clune, Flanagan all hopeless

But more than that- can you honestly believe a $700k+ Brooks offers significantly more than a $500k Flanagan or Taaffe or Sezar?
Yes. I don't know whether Taaffe is a first grade half so I won't comment on that, but Kyle Flanagan is a reserve grader who has been burgling a living from NRL clubs for half a decade.
Try to retain Brooks, by all means. But don't lock the club into an Mbye type deal for an Mbye type player.

Case in point- at $450k a year, Mbye isn't the worst #6 option I could think of.
I mean, in the sense that paying Stephen Hawking two mil would be worse I guess you're right. But as an actual plan to win NRL games, it's about as bad as they come.

Bateman behind Ofahengaue release

So why did the Tigers let consistent forward Joe Ofahengaue go to the Eels mid-season?

Watch for a change in the way they play in-form Englishman John Bateman to learn the answer.

John Bateman is believed to be the reason the Tigers were so willing to let Joe Ofahengaue walk (NRL Imagery)
Bateman has been an edge forward all his career but I'm hearing the Tigers are planning to turn him into a middle.

After a couple of mixed seasons back in Super League, Bateman has been a great buy for the Tigers and his arrival has coincided with the team's upturn in form.

This^ and money obviously. Johnny plays in the
middle heaps anyway. Think he will be a great
13. Also in the same article it mentions that
Averillo is free to negotiate. Don't know if we
would look at him or where I'd play him tbh, dunno

I still don't want to pay overs for Brooks. I think it'd be good for him to stay as well. Doueihi was a puss contract for us though. He isn't at Mbye or Reynolds level but worse than Brooks by far. It's not a good comparison point.

He was playing 13 in the second half against Canberra.

“It’s a big decision for me, and I’ve got to have a think about what’s best for me".

“I think a lot of the time I haven’t put myself first with these decisions. When the time comes I’m going to sit down and maybe be a bit selfish and do what’s best for me”.

“I’m getting towards the back end of my career, so I’ve got to make a decision where I’m going to play my best footy, and a club that looks like they’re going to be in contention."

“I haven’t played finals footy, and that’s what I want to do, you want to win premierships.”

Oh here you go again KR . . . trotting out facts and reality and such.
Mate, this is a forum where people spout rubbish like they know what they're talking about.
We don't need your truth and facts getting in the way of our whackjob opinions.
Fall into line mate.
Be like the rest of us here . . . . less substance, more BS please. 😉

Only my opinion but if you can sign Brooks for less than 750-800k per season you have done a pretty good deal, especially if you can apply a long service payment of 180-200k with the deal.

The only problem is that you are then paying full freight on Nofo's contract because the way things stand at the moment the long service payment only applies once to a club regardless of how many players may meet the current criteria.

I have stated elsewhere that it would be much fairer and would encourage clubs and players to stay loyal and remain long term at a club if the payment was available for more than a single instance.

Not knowing exactly what that criteria should be without looking at how many players would qualify at each club, and it is quite possible that there may need to be a limit placed on it, but surely it should be more than a single instance per club.

If Luke Brooks went to another club, I'm pretty sure he would fit the long serving player criteria for that club, if not immediately, certainly in the near future.

Anyway I know a lot of the experts on here constantly bag Luke Brooks and go on about how useless he is so I'll just have to ignore the opinions of people like Matty Johns who obviously has not got a clue.

The guy obviously has no idea and needs to come on this forum so that those in the know can straighten Matty out and "Make Matty a Man Again" that knows something about footy.

And Brooks is having a better season (In a weaker side) than at least 2 of those mentioned.....

If we keep Brooks (Which we need to do) it won't be for anything under 650k
- Anyone with their fingers crossed for a magical bargain outcome is on a hiding to nothing.
1 Mil over two years.

When you break it down, 750k a season for Brooks is probably about right based on what the other 16 starting halfbacks are getting paid.

Over 1 Million:
Cleary - Moses - DCE - Hynes - Hunt - Keary

Between 750k - 1 million:
Burton - Reynolds - Hughes - Townsend - Hastings - Fogarty?

Bellow 750k:
Boyd - Illias - O’Sullivan - Johnson

These figures are mainly guess work on my part based on reports at the time. Could be less, could be more. But the guys on less than 750k are fairly early in their careers, or in SJs case were signed on their value at the time.

Getting Brooks for less than 750k and then factoring the cap exemption could be a steal. Even if he doesn’t perform, on a 2 year deal there isn’t much risk as someone would likely still pick him up either in the NRL or super league. Halves are the hottest commodity in the game at the moment.

Imagine what out team would be like if we had any one of these @7 ???

Cleary - Moses - DCE - Hynes - Hunt - Keary, Burton - Reynolds - Hughes - Townsend - Hastings - Fogarty?

Don't bet me wrong, Brooksy is one of my all time tigers, We just need to keep him at the right price.

Anyone with their fingers crossed for a magical bargain outcome is on a hiding to nothing.

I still want him for cheap. He is coming to the backend of his career and he has had an inconsistent career. He is starting to play consistent good footy apart from the start of the season where he was underdone.

Staying at the club on unders would be good for him and it may be good for his longer term career.

the Frizell links make plenty of sense. get Johnny around the ball more via moving him into the middle. Kepaoa could easily do a job out there on the right as well effective immediately.
