That said, and to contradict what I just posted to a degree, if Hunt WAS to be chased & signed (regardless of cost) there are a couple of scenarios that could work out long term:

Wakeham gets extended to be the primary back-up #7 & learn from Hunt. At 23 years old, he's shown glimpses this season of being a player. With a smattering of games, and learning from someone like Hunt, he could be a servicable #7 once Hunt retires if he can continue developing.

Doueihi could fit better with Hunt @ #7- he's not an organising player etc, he's more an athlete. Hunt running the show allows Doueihi to play the more dynamic running 5/8 role- one he is far better suited to.

Large- Hunt gets 2 years. Large will be 18/19 at that point & probably close to ready to be included in the squad.

There is still probably a need for a 'bridge' player between now & either when Doueihi is back, or Large is ready. But, there COULD be something of a succession plan in place, if they play it out right.

I know Doueihi is on the nose a bit, but he is still, probably, our most skillful player in the halves at the club. With the right combinations, he can be successful.

I think your counter-argument to yourself? has some valid points. I think Douehi may be finished though, so would probably exclude him from future plans. I also think that signing Hunt achieves these things:
  • Gets us a controlling half, which we desperately need
  • Demonstrates to the other players, and the media, that we can sign marquee players (seems Api, Klemmer and Bateman are not enough)
  • Hopefully gets us to the finals during his tenure
    • gets the "finals monkey" off our backs
    • makes us a more attractive destination to sign others
Love your point about Wakeham. He has shown glimpses and can certainly goal kick. At worst he can be a very serviceable fill in and leader in reserves.

I do like a good counter argument...even if it's against myself...

I'm not convinced Doueihi is done. Sheens even said he was erring on the side of conservative saying he was out most of next season.

You don't pay a 34 year old $1m a season to get to 9th. In saying that, I don't know if our window is open with the addition of 1 player (Hunt). I'm not 100% convinced this is great business. We all want to win 'now', but this looks like a financial investment into mediocrity. It will improve the team, no doubt. But at what long term cost?

The long term cost could be losing Bula,Pole,Tupou,Da Silva and Stef if we continue being a perennially shit Club.
Their development will not continue if were coming 16th or 17th and the better run Clubs will come calling and tell them how their Careers will thrive elsewhere
EE.g.Tedesco, Moses, Addo Carr etc etc etc
We have the Cap Space..get the deal done.
