How do some deals NOT get made...

For all the insiders, or anyone familiar with our negotiating process, I am genuinely interested in how we miss what appear easy deals.

Case One: Joe O / Parra

Fact: Parra wanted a middle forward immediately due to injuries. Parra desperate as they believe they are in a premiership window.

Fact: Parra have a young, very highly rated half in Ethan Sanders. NSW juniors MOTM. Grand Final juniors MOTM. "Cronk clone".

Fact: His path is blocked. Parra just signed their 6 and 7 to very long deals.

Fact: We desperately need a half back.

Fact: We have the cap space.

How on earth was Ethan Sanders not included in the Joe O deal? We held all the chips and the kid's path is blocked.

Even if he was not keen, you could talk him into a short term deal / come and see the place / get more experience / worst case scenario you can leave end of 2024 / best case you're our long term half and very well paid.

Literally everything screamed "deal / both sides win".

Yet, somehow, two months later Parra are moving back into premiership contention and Joe O will be a big part of their forward depth.

And we have no half back at all.

How do we 'not' land a highly rated half given all that?

problem with Joe o was the alleged 650k he was on for 24 and 25, parramatta needed a middle forward and was prepared to pay full freight for 24 and 25
our issue we can't get anyone to come to the club so kind of a mute point in relation to salary cap space I guess

Why would Eels do it we wanted Joe O gone. No leverage when offloading a player very few teams had any interest in.

Yeah...but we could have insisted they include Sanders.

Make it clear he is not in their plans / needs to be in the deal.

They also needed him. Their middles were getting worn out first six weeks. RCG and Paulo off = collapsed.

Now they have depth.

And now they are letting Sanders talk to other clubs...so they are not keeping him anyway. How on earth did we not insist on him being part of the deal.

The kid has been available for a while...we had exactly what they needed. Why was there no deal?

I can't remember who it was...but one poster here came up with a brilliant line the other day. "The Tigers are the masters of the one man swap".

The Penrith Panthers have reportedly pulled out of the race for young Parramatta Eels playmaker Ethan Sanders.

Likened to Cooper Cronk, Sanders is one of the best halves coming through the ranks and earnt the Player of the Match award in the SG Ball Final last season.

While he was recently linked to the Panthers, it is understood by News Corp that they have pulled out of the race for his signature after meeting with him in early June.

The Canberra Raiders have also been linked to Ethan Sanders.

The Raiders are in desperate need of a long-term playmaker following Jack Wighton's decision to join the South Sydney Rabbitohs next season and have reportedly made a big play to entice him to join the club.

Excellent point EH, just doesn’t make any sense to me and hundreds of others. That’s the sort of thing that I’d like to hear some feedback as to why that didn’t happen.
Maybe a key question for Ask the Boss, if/when it reappears. 👍🏻

We are far more likely to get "Don't ask the Boss" events where we just get lectured about how we will improve in the future

I humbly acknowledge the “ one man swap “ line was me. And it’s unfortunately true.

The Answer is in that No one's preference is to join the Tigers.

Imagine if your a player and in negotiations with the Tigers and your manager says that the Storm might be interested. What do u do>??

We have to play harder and win a few more games to swing the perception of the club around.

Swings and roundabouts.

Maybe Benji didn’t rate him , like Schuster (let’s unleash Brooks instead)
