Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

As I say, my point here isn't to bag Papali'i. It's just to note that we're one year into a three year deal for a guy who we signed as an 8/10 player but didn't give much opportunity to be anything more than a 5/10 player. That's not his fault, but it's also not money well spent - so far.

If a player doesn't perform maybe he doesn't have the ability but we need better. I don't think we've gotten good value from Bateman,IP, Klemmer and Stef.

The question is do we let some of these guys go ?

Are we hoping that with a better squad these guys will perform better ? Did they have an off year ?

Luai shenanigans or not, to publicly question the value of a player that's done so much for your club , leaving because he can't really get paid the way he should if he stays, that's pretty shitty from a coach.

If he moves to a lesser club, he will have to cut the bullshit ego complex he comes up with, while they win he can do what he wants and its play on. If he moves to a club that lose, it will genuinely sour the ones who back him.

It's Cleary. What do you expect. Guy can coach but he gets the best deal for himself and his over anything else.
Yes I know. Honestly I see Luai’s perspective here. I’d be pretty pissed off myself if my coach decided to play down how much I’m actually worth the moment I start negotiating my new contract. It’s such a limited career, so these players need to make as much before the well drys up.

I completely understand where Luai is coming from. I also completely understand that Cleary has no integrity.

Luai is probably worth $800K.
Definitely not more, and he’s delusional if he thinks he is (which given the Instagram post, I think he needs a psych evaluation).

Can’t wait for some random team to offer 1.2 million at him .. Just to stuff Ivan up 😂

Cleary's son could take a huge pay cut as a demonstration of solidarity with his team mate.

Luai is probably worth $600K-$750K.

If a team were to offer that Luai would be selling himself short not to accept. Who would not accept a chance to set yourself up for life.

I am focusing here on your response re Kepaoa. “ But hasn’t got the basics right”.
He’s a bloody first grader , he should have had the basics right ten or more years ago !
Benji will go mental if he’s got players who don’t know or can’t complete, the basics.
I totally agree.

Except I don't think Benji will do a bellyache and go mental when players get the basics wrong.
He will go mental when our scoreline is 44-0 against.

Someone like Cooper Cronk would be all over the "basics" hey guys you need to carry the ball higher, not step out of position like you are doing....

Benji seems far more "easy going".

I hate that we have thrown Benji in now as a coach. IMHO we should have told Benji to cool his heels for 1-2 years or be assistant. Meanwhile we throw a good basics coach in. Have the team hate doing tackling drills, but we would start with a team who has footy 101 sorted.

The classic example, Warriors. After Stephen Kearney left, who drilled the basics + Todd Payten, etc. you have a side that really knows how to play football now.
^Yes I think the current success is due to the current coach. But it is also building the warriors from the rabble they were to what they are now.
