Possibly, though there's more to backline movements than just the speed of the ruck; a well-structured attacking team will alter the depth of play to get to the edges, even if they're not compressing the ruck as they'd like.I would say it's the hardest position to defend but not the most important.
If your team is controlling the ruck well, the ball rarely makes it out to the edge. Melbourne do this very well.
Point being, that most points come at the edges, not in the middle, so whilst it's the hardest (I agree), given how high the percentage of that tries come via edge defence systems is, I'd say, particularly as an individual position, it is also the most important, mainly by virtue of the fact that a poor edge (of which centre is the lynchpin), will have the greatest negative impact on points conceded.
