Getting fed up with all the trashing of Warner going on
We just won the world cup and Warner was our top run scorer and his fielding outstanding .His outfield catches against Sri Lanka turned the tide when it looked like we would lose first 3 games .To M Johnson please crawl back in your hole
I get where you’re coming from Steve, I’m hesitant to bag anyone who makes it that level and that’s why I always cheer for the debutants. But we’re talking team selections and retirement send-offs, so you gotta get pragmatic, unemotional and sometimes a bit rough on a player.
I thought my post was written that way, I did mention his ODI form is still consistent. But his test form away from Oz is consistently terrible and I didn’t want him going to England two ashes ago. His home form is great and I’d pick at home every day.
Now when it comes to a hero’s send off (as this was the other part of the convo), I’m not sure he deserves that with sandpaper gate, but at the same time ball tampering has been going on for centuries. Also Warney was a drug cheat and still got a hero send off. But Warner had a new young bloke in the team and should have shown him how to be a stand up guy, but instead he helped him cheat?
Oz Cricket think what he did was so bad he’s been banned from coaching cricket to keep him away from young impressionable cricketers, but he’s not a pedo, he was just cricket ball tampering. So I think it’s a bit rough but if Oz Cricket think what he did was so bad, then I’m not expecting they’d be interested in a hero send off.
I am however interested to know what you think Steve, should he get a hero’s send off In Sydney, his last test?

My comments were not directed at you .I should have just posted not as a reply .
I just think Warner should be picked for the tests
I also think the timing of Johnsons comments deplorable
He copped massive punishment and now being retried in the court of public opinion
We just won the world cup and if any other country had won they would have had a parade . He comes home to a bagging .
He said he wants to retire at end of SCG test . Didn't hear him say " I want a heros send off " . Imagine he gets a ton - should he get a standing ovation for that when he's dismissed ?

It’s kool Steve I wasn’t taking offence.
Warner didn’t say it. It was a ref @Tucker made to what Mitchell Johnson said about Warner should not get a hero’s send off and Tucker said MJ had a point and that’s where the conversation started.

Anyway yes Warner should get picked for the home tests his form at home has always been good.
And yes I think he should be able to say I’m going to retire after Sydney and get a bit of a send off. But I can understand some people questioning that.
Also yes I’m picking The Run Smith.

In the 2019/20 Australian summer, Warner went ballistic whilst Smith was reserved compared to his heroics over in the old Dart in the series previous.
Since then, this is a record of their Test outputs:

  • Indian 4 Test Series in Australia 20/21
    • Warner batted 4 innings and scored 67 runs @ 16.75
    • Smith batted 8 innings and scored 313 runs @ 44.71

  • England 5 Test Series in Australia 21/22
    • Warner batted 8 innings and scored 273 runs @ 34.13
    • Smith batted 8 innings and scored 244 runs @30.50

  • Pakistan 3 Test Series in Pakistan 21/22
    • Warner batted 5 innings and scored 169 runs @ 33.80
    • Smith batted 4 innings and scored 226 runs @ 56.50

  • Sri Lankan 2 Test Series in Sri Lanka 22
    • Warner batted 4 innings and scored 64 runs @ 21.33
    • Smith batted 3 innings and scored 151 runs @75.50

  • West Indies 2 Test Series in Australia 22/23
    • Warner batted 4 innings and scored 102 runs @25.50
    • Smith batted 4 innings and scored 255 runs @127.50

  • South Africa 3 Test Series in Australia 22/23
    • Warner batted 4 innings and scored 213 runs @ 53.25
    • Smith batted 4 innings and scored 231 runs @ 57.75

  • Indian 4 Test Series in India 23
    • Warner batted 3 innings and scored 26 runs @ 8.67
    • Smith batted 7 innings and scored 145 runs @ 29.00

  • Indian 1 Test for World Test Championship in England 23
    • Warner batted 2 innings and scored 44 runs @ 22.00
    • Smith batted 2 innings and scored 155 runs @ 77.50

  • England 5 Test Series in England 23
    • Warner batted 10 innings and scored 285 runs @ 28.50
    • Smith batted 10 innings and scored 373 runs @ 37.30
@Stevec, clearly one bloke is doing his job better than the other. If Smith is out of form and should be dropped, why does Warner get a free pass?

This is a very hypocritical post considering the one you made defending Warner.
I'm not comparing Smith to Warner .I'm just noticing Smith of recent times seems to have lost his timing . Thru the world cup struggled and seemed his mind muddled . No referral when not out and involved in a few Yes/No s near run outs .I know you will say different format but when your eye is in you see ball and hit ball .
Smith has been one of our greatest batsman and nothing would make me happier than he finds his best form .
No comment on Warner form .Just don't want to retry him over the Ugly Cape town events
That's exactly what the media is doing .especially right after winning the world cup and Warner our top run scorer

Just a ridiculous assessment, and the stats back it up; Smith still manages to average nearly 30, in India, even when he's 'horribly out of form'.

But yeah, poor Davey...

Agree Smith struggled for timing, then hit a nice 50 in the first t20 but got run out. I noticed he didn’t seem on his game like usual during the WC, and I’m not sure this run out was completely his fault but he was involved.
Anyway as far as I’m concerned I’m picking both Warner and The Run Smith in the first test v Pakis and I’m giving Davy a send off just not over the top.
No ticker tape parades down Oxford st.
I’m planning to go to the Sydney test so I hope they both hit tons.

Well said .Agree with every word .Wish I had worded things as balanced as you
I think - Our world cup win was close to our finest achievement in many years and objected to bringing up sandpaper gate after all this time .
Curious whats your opinion on Carey vs Inglis ?

Yes I’ve been wondering what they’re going to do with Carey in the test team. He looked really good when in form with the bat. But after that fatstow run out he’s looked terrible hey. His confidence and therefore his technique seemed to disappear playing across the line and looked very tentative. I think the commotion over that run out really affected him. It’s a shame bcoz he did the correct thing and those weak poms carried on setting a bad example for the kids.
Inglis looks in form, as you mentioned when your eye is in it’s in. But will they drop Carey for a debutant? I don’t think so. I’d give Carey a few more games with the warning of score runs or you won’t be playing the windies.
Both have sufficient glove work from what I’ve seen so it’s about scoring runs and all keepers can thank Gilly for that.
Did you know Inglis was born a Pom?

Yes I think what's happened to Carey because of the legal Bairstow dismissal is so unfair and im sure its affected him . However his technique of swiping horizontal bats at straight balls cant go on . Either he and the coaches fix the problem or Inglis is the better bet . I really hope he fixes his technique and comes good

This is a good point and I’ve been thinking, that really the coaches should be on to him about it and assisting him with the rectifications he needs to make, and he as a pro cricketer needs to put in the overtime, it should be a combined effort. Has he played any shield since he’s been back? Regaining his confidence with the bat will help him forget the fatstow dismissal. Although you could go the other way and chuck a surprise party for him to celebrate what a great dismissal it was and how much it got up the poms. Everyone dresses up as fatstow.
I hope he comes good too, the fatstow dismissal shows he’s always thinking, I like that.
So if you’re the coach Steve and he’s still playing average in the nets are you brave enough to be dropping him for the first test for Inglis?

The coaching is simple People tend to sweep when they are unsure which way the ball is turning and don't want to expose both edges with a vertical bat . Conventional sweeping is as safe as houses if ball is outside off and will if missed strike the pad outside off . This can never be OUT . I think Carey should confine himself to playing a vertical bat in the V
or conventional sweeps to balls outside off . He should drop the reverse sweep till well into his innings and he's set ! Hope he goes well in Perth !

Yep, and I’d like to add keep ya head down and look to play along the ground till you’ve hit 50. He also has a tendency to hit through the air too early in an innings.

Looking forward to seeing Steve Smith open the batting in 15 mins for the Sixes
Hope his much debated timing comes back . Pre match he said opening frees him up !
Go Smithy
