2024 Backline

Why do you think Staines has snatched one wing position?
He has shown nothing in our colours so far…
He started every game he was available in last year. He is the fastest in our team. He has the best support play in our team. He also makes more avg running metres than Nofo & Tupou.

Tupou is leaving next year so becomes less of a priority for first grade.
Nofo seems to have too much baggage.
Naden has done less in our colours than Staines & is a centre.
Staines at 23 has done a lot more than Lobb at 22 or Alaimalo at 28.

The old “least shit of a shit lot”?
Yeah you are probably right.

Why Naden rarely gets a mention? Is he on the outer too ?
I just see him more as a centre. I think he will be first in for Toa or Olam and given minutes in cup otherwise. Has barely played the last couple years due to injury so will probably give him gave time over keeping him as an 18th man.

He can play mate
Yeah, your post prompted me to check him out and It seems to be be case.

Hes pretty tall and gives us that beautiful value added of height for catches and a long long reach during the corner post contest.

But it was his step and gap work that impressed me the most. We could use him running off his wing stepping inside.

His running Reminds me a bit of a taller version of John Sutton in his hey day.

And an eye for the gap.

Very impressive.

I admit I havent so Ill keep an interested eye out and look forward to his debut
Theres some good highlights on you tube.

Plus he’s got a bit of speed, he’s zipping through defenders and they are double thinking their approach.

There’s a good tackle on him when the d went high.

Yeah, just had a look, his speed and ability to change direction at speed is impressive, looks very strong too

Lots of broken play footage, lots of room to move...might find NRL defenses a bit tougher, lets hope Benjis found us a diamond

I’ve got a little research project going on the side trying to predict Benjis general approach to games the season. I have some more work to do, but so far I think Benji will surprise us by “dumbing down” the play.

Many reasons for that, the search for consistency being chief.

Paps was saying it was hard for the side last year to handle the changes Tim wanted, echoes of that too from Api in an interview he did too. Then we have injuries and struggling halves.

Also, without too many Uber elite players a more basic plan offers the best chance of success.

On Tim’s side, he couldn’t stick with a losing formula and he was let down badly by basic schoolboy errors. Brooksy had that time off trying to find himself or something.

Benji will need to instill a lot of discipline and players will need to pace themselves, stay in the line and focus on bread and butter issues of handling.

I think if we can nail these fundamentals, before Jarome arrives, it will boost his impact immeasurably.
