Stefano Utoikamanu #241

I am hoping Richie has put a cut of date on the offer.
If he doesn’t sign and wants to shop around good luck to him.
But
We don’t put the same offer on the table if he comes crawling back because no one else offers near the same $.
Can’t have the best of both worlds.

I am hoping he shops around because I don’t think he’s worth the money that’s been mentioned.

Really couldn’t care less what he does tbh. If he stays he stays. If he goes, whatever.
Yeah... I'm the same... Hard to garner much interest in this joint the way they been playing

I will.say it's a pretty shrewd move by the agent... Good for Stef financially (he should jump at it if $$$ is his desire... If winning games and. Being part of a strong teams his. Main focus then au revior tigre.. He's got himself a nice market value to kick off from

Who said anything about making players sign with clubs?
They can sign with whoever they want but the club will use whatever the highest contract offered was off their salary cap.
As I understand it the NRL already has some sort of valuation system that they apply. It would just be an upgrade on that.
Yep if a club valued a player there would be room for them to stay. If not there’s no contract available and just like now they would be free to move on where there is a contract.

The initial disruption would be chaotic but once stabilized, the system would move talent across the clubs much more evenly.

It won’t happen.

We offered Latrell 1.2 million. Moses was offered 1.4 million. Are you saying Souths and Parra have these amounts deducted from their cap despite paying them less?

If it actually worked like that now, why are people pushing for a market value system if it already exists?
It doesn’t exist because the values are all speculative and made up.

Once the system is in place over a few seasons, the club would be prepared and have cap space for the players they value. Theres not room for 7 origin players at one club any more. Thats the point.

Players are forced to move on all the time if there isnt room. Through injury or lack of talent, or falling out with a coach. Is that a restriction of trade? or that only applies if you’re elite?

It wouldn’t prevent clubs swapping or
releasing players early. The cap value for the player has been set. Would probably make that process more efficient and better for everyone. (Except managers)

But again, it’s not going to happen so all a mute point.

Hate to be chicken little but Luai signed to play behind a pack containing an improving young prop in Stef and a seasoned veteran in Papali’i. His management will be watching this space.
I doubt he cares if I'm honest. his self belief is unshakeable. I'm sure he'll think it'd be nice to have Stefano around but it won't affect him in the slightest.

Mate what is your obsession with restraint of trade? I feel like you're coming at me a bit and I can't understand why. Some of the things you suggested could be argued to be restraint of trade. You don't have to agree. It's ok...the sun comes up again tomorrow. I feel like you've focused on this, but it's about 10% of my overall argument.

I agree. Players are forced to move on in the current system. I am totally fine with the current system and i think it's as fair as it's ever going to be. It's you who wants to change it.

I simply responded to some of your suggestions with a counter weight argument on the difficulty of implementing your new rules.

Forgive me...I didn't intend to upset you.

Noted. Apologies.

People acting like Stefano is a huge loss are overexaggerating. He might kill it at a top team if he leaves, doesn't make him leaving any worse. Same with Papali'i. Reality is 800K for him at 5 years is more than he is worth. We should be looking to sign guys like Royce Hunt, Davey Moale, Griffin Neame... who will ask for less and be better value

A 5 year offer reeks of desperation to me for a guy who’s played one Orign game. To put it into perspective, we signed Luai for 5 years. You only sign guys to that length who are marquee and who are game changers. Stef isn’t that.

For a bloke that's only ever played behind the likes of Haas, JFH, Leota etc....

He's in for a rough trot either way

Halves need forwards and weapons to show their wares. We were short on weapons and we’re fast becoming short on quality forwards too. Benji will be judged on the side he has at his disposal next year.

What do expect him (Luai) to do ? His Penrith money has been reallocated …
