John Bateman #268

By the way, I don't hate the guy. I have said many times his effort is there so I would never hate anyone who tries. I just want him out because his leadership has been so poor in regards dumb plays at crucial times. Times when you need a leader to make the right play he drops the ball, forces a pass, or gives a deliberate penalty away.

I think I found it. 3 minutes into the second half.
The commentators said it was Tallyn da Silva who raked the ball, the video ref said it was Bateman. It has been recorded as a penalty against Da Silva. They both had hands on the ball. I went off the infringement report. Therefore not a lie.
Wasnt recorded as a penalty against him. Da Silva had hands all over the ball and he copped the penalty officially.

Lol the deflection is seriously laughable.

No they don't, but that's also the point. They aren't all seasoned internationals that's our voce captain. How can't you see the point?
I can see the point. Our leaders have been poor. Our kids have also been shit.
Celebrating losing an International early is ridiculous when you are a club performing as poorly as we are.

I don't believe our kids have been shit. They have had some shit moments, but that's expected

Well if you believe that then clearly Bateman fits this same narrative. He has not been worse than them.
I can understand the coach giving him a spray as a leader. I can even understand loaning him out to bank some cash.
Letting him walk without suitable replacement is poor business.

Again your missing it completely. Bateman doesn't get the same latitude because he is a seasoned international and Vice captain of the team. His brain explosions get zero latitude. The fact you hold kids to the same standards as an international experienced leader shows that your the unreasonable one here, not me.

Bateman, a polarising figure whereever he's played, a desperation signing by the former administration, was never going to be a good fit for WT. Fairly or unfairly, his 'reputation' preceded him to the club's detriment.

WT need folk who will try to harness & drive greater collective effort. Sadly, that's not Bateman.

I wish him & family well but glad he's left WT & hope he doesn't return

Not at all. In an organisation that struggles to win games, the experienced guys are essential. Letting them go early because some kids are sometimes doing well and not replacing them is poor business. If the senior blokes are letting us down as you claim, then you manage them, you coach them. You dont let them cut their contracts short. That is the weak way out.

I don’t think he is a scapegoat and his stats do look ok , but he seems to make these mistakes or give away dumb penalties at crucial times
There isn't a stat for that and I suppose some would say that stats don't always tell the full story and are often manipulated to suit a particular agenda.

As I have said else where, "What about all the niggling, arguing, slow play the balls because of his carry ons, the loss of momentum and all the other crap in his game that is just as bad, if not worse than the penalties that are given away."

I also said, "he gets away with a lot of shit and I believe that if many other players did the same sorts of things he does they would probably get penalised more than what he does."

I have to give him credit, he is pretty good at pushing the envelope and knowing how much crap he can get away with referees.

As you have said, his stats look ok, but is what he has brought been in keeping with the size of his contract and the transfer fee that was involved to get him here?

Many would say that he has just not provided value for money.

We’re obviously not capable of coaching and inspiring players.
Either that or some hot head on one of the boards has told Richo & Benji to cut them loose?

That is not an incorrect opinion to have and I actually share it.
My original comment was that those kicking him on the way out and stating that him and all his "ill discipline" has been costing us is not true firstly and secondly is crating a strawman to crucify when the real problems still remain.
We as supporters have done this all along, myself included with guys like Brooks.
Our problems are varied and nuanced.
You have to ask yourself how have the coaching staff performed? Our experienced team leaders? Our young blokes?
The ill discipline has certainly been from the older blokes, but Id suggest Sezer, Api and Klemmer are the real culprits here, more so than Bateman. The stats this year back this up.

Bateman to his credit played like he always has. We needed him to be a senior player and he wasn't. Again, wrong person, wrong role, wrong time.

Break it off and move on.

Just getting sick of these messy breaks ups. It can't always be her...

Who knows how good Bateman could have been for us if we didnt sack the guy who called him the lead domino.
