It’s a great question.
When I was told about this I questioned the fit and my source corrected me pretty quickly.
The culture Benji introduced this preseason is very family oriented focussed and for all the boys to be together extremely similar to Penrith. Benji continuously promotes all the players family members to all meet each other and to form a togetherness within the squad. He also apparently frequently organises a lot of club events to help push this.
Very similar to what the Bulldogs have done this year and it’s paying dividens with Critta and Ciraldo pushing a top 4 charge. Their effort areas and ability to play for each other is so evident and it’s winning them games.
The formula works, you just need the right players to build it.
The reason Luai was thrown the serious money he was even before his latest form push which has silenced a lot of people questioning his price tag was to be the face of this vision Benji is trying to push. Look at the impact Critta has made at the Dogs, by all accounts Luai is the face of that culture and can provide x2 of what Critta is from a leadership perspective.
Now to answer your question more directly, even though Taylan off the field may have made mistakes which I’m not looking past or accepting. But he’s also reportedly a very local leader and big on family and not letting the boys down which is probably why Benji likes the fit and thinks it might work. He’s also a serious serious talent.
I’m not saying it’s right but one of May’s incident crossed my brain when a couple of seasons ago the Penrith boys were out and Cleary was getting harassed at some bar. From all reports this bloke wouldn’t leave Nathan alone pestering him all night and was told politely to bugger off. The bloke kept grabbing Cleary and May come from behind and pulled him off. Protective instincts with his team mate kicked in and he got charged for that from memory. I’m not saying it’s right and May should be more publicly aware, however I can definitely see Taylan being the type of player that would fit into what Benji is trying to push and could take his game to another level with more responsibility.
