Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I prefer Faatappe. Younger. Room to grow. Naden not so. We all see life differently. Im not talking about yesterday but tomorrow from today.
@Tucker shares Benjis view that there’s a solid footy player creeping about in there somewhere.

But I am really enjoying the kids press interviews. He’s still innocent and a bit of a lad.

He’s one of our investments.

You are both right. But only if short term outcomes are the priority.

Playing Naden in a wooden spoon team is the short term thinking that dug this hole.

It’s a mixed message. We need him to move on. He needs to know if he stays with us he will NEVER see first grade again.

Beyond him, we need our culture to be that we aren’t an easy retirement fund for any late career player. Players needs to see what happens.

Perform or fade to nothing in state cup.

Every player that comes here needs to understand that is a truth that waits if they don’t put in or can’t control their behaviour on field.

His salary v benefit will be a concern. Knights paid very good upwards of 600k per year coin for him so doubt he would join a desperate team for much less than he is on now. I just can’t have him onboard for that price.

Food for thought could be that Knights have found the right balance for him & 25-30mins prevents fatigue/dumb actions to come into play. Granted he maybe maturing his playing style/fitness somewhat but default behaviors don’t just vanish over a preseason.

I would prefer Lucas from the Knights if targeting one of their backrowers. His mobility, work rate and size would lock up the right backrow spot probably for same coin Hetherington would want.
I can't imagine his next contract will be of the same value.

I think I'm getting misunderstood about something. Hetherington is the name/player I'm using, but what I'm suggesting is signing a particular "style" of player for the Tigers.

Lucas is a fine player. But he doesn't make a ball runner look up, worried he's about to get owned for running through the middle.

Our forwards are 'soft'. We don't own the middle of the field. Again, using the Roosters as an example- JWH, Radley, Collins etc- you know you're going to wear a few hits. Surprisingly- these guys do NOT produce a whole lot of run metres. The Storm, Bulldogs & Dolphins are very similar in their construction. It's not about the metres made- it's about stopping the other guys from getting them.

Hetherington & Horsburgh give players running the ball that "wonder where he is" moment that we don't have right now. WE need to OWN the middle, so that the opposition is forced to test their skills more instead of just running over us.

For that reason, I see value in Klemmer & Seyfarth. They do not get physically beaten & are strong defensively. If the Roosters can be the most penalised team in the NRL for 3 seasons straight & run JWH, Radley, Collins etc- I'm ok putting loose cannons on the field & trying to match them physically while giving away penalties. If it stops teams running through our soft middle- sign me up.

I'm a bit confused that people actually rate Faataape. Must see something I can't. I even seen some one compare him to Kotoni Staggs 😄 I'll have to watch him more closely because I'm not seeing it ATM.
I think Faataape is getting criticized for not being a stand out 1st grade player. I believe the people sticking up for him are suggesting there is something to work with there.

If Faataape is your #3/4 centre option & not relied on weekly- you can see potential enough to develop. Same with Naden. As a starter- no value. But to fill in when there are injuries etc- he's a viable short term solution.

It's really all about what is expected from the player.

I don’t know, he’s made some pretty good calls with Galvin and Samuela, even Reuben Porter to an extent. I can’t think of many other coaches beside Wayne that’d give an 18 year old the 6 jersey. I also would like to know who you’d swap Faataape for?

Since our NSW cup squad just got abused 64-6 I highly doubt anyone in there could come in and do a better job. Tell me how many of these names excite you : Faaletino Tavana, Nick Mougious, Josh Feledy and Declan Casey. Cause those are your other options pretty much.
The Fat (easier then spelling his full name) is doing ok for a guy with 8 FG games under his belt

Good post highlighting some factors that frequently get overlooked and we are on the same page in most respects.

If I may offer some respectful counterpoints in the spirit that reasonable people can disagree.

I hear what you say with regards to exculpating Benji but my own view, at this time, is that it’s his job is to reign in the Ill-discipline and he’s proven that he’s simply not up to the task.

Its not the same player getting into trouble, it’s a veritable conga line of miscreants waiting for the next fellow to grab the waist in front.

I imagine that he’s spent a disproportionate amount of the season in passionate refrain of such uncouth behaviour, only for his earnest representations to fall on deaf ears.

Therefore, I conclude that his communication skills and indeed his consequences for such unsavoury behaviour need serious revision and upgrade.

At the moment there seems to be a rush to get the impugned player back into the side asap and I think it’s because Benji is desperate for results to beat last year’s horrifying season that (thankfully) brought down an entire clubs heirachy.

He was “anointed” as coach and didn’t face a competitive process, eagerly grasping the poisoned chalice with both hands. I don’t buy this “rookie coach” excuse for a second and I don’t think it serves him well. Every NRL coach is a rookie at one point and most of them don’t come last in their first year or use their inexperience to conjure up sympathy. It’s a brutal sport, a sporting monstrosity, only the tough succeed.

Another failure is the general decline or lack of enthusiasm from some of the senior players. It worries me because when the kids get older and talent arrives, I don’t want to see the same decay.

Now obviously, we share a similar high view of Richo, but I think if that platform is laid, there is no harm in questioning some of his decisions. I think it’s healthy if the respect is there, especially as a member.

He’s at our service he says. He’s right.

Thanks again for your insights, both enigmatic and well argued.
Well written post. Hard to argue with such great articulation!

I like Faataape. I think he’s ok. Naden is probably the worst centre I have ever seen in my life. Plus he got done for coke which makes him even more of a knob.
