Courier Mail: BRONCOS COURT KOBE

Kobe Hetherington is set to cap a remarkable turnaround with the Broncos keen to extend the defensive hitman.

Sport Confidential understands Hetherington is a priority retention for the Broncos _ just weeks after Pat Carrigan’s understudy discussed the prospect of quitting the club for a move to Sydney.

Hetherington was given permission to negotiate with rival clubs in September, prompting the Wests Tigers and the Dragons to express interest.

But in the wake of Kevin Walters’ sacking, new coach Michael Maguire has run his eye over Brisbane’s roster and is keen to retain Hetherington.

Hetherington’s management met with Maguire last week and the Broncos coach ruled out an immediate release, making it clear he sees the hard-hitting forward as a key member of his top 17.

The Broncos recently secured Reece Walsh to a four-year upgrade and Hetherington, off-contract next year, is one of the next in line for an extension.

Hetherington is keen to be a starting player, but is stuck behind Queensland and Test star Carrigan, who is Brisbane’s first-choice No.13.

Great news for Brisbane.

At this stage he is still our player so he should be doing what the contract requires and that applies to all our players. No exceptions and that includes the malcontent Bateman especially as he is supposedly an international and one of the highest paid players at the club
He is doing what the contract requires. The contract mandates a set amount of time off. The club claimed his last day was x he claimed its y and had supporting evidence.
The club pushing to have him back for one day was nothing more than petty bs. There has been no exception for him, thus far at least.

Poor bloke is gonna re-sign with Broncos and get stuck playing 15 minutes off the bench. Unfortunate but his fault for wasting his career at that dogshit club

Unless Kobe plays 2nd row he won't get a start until origin for the foreseeable future.

He'd have no 13 at the tigers. Put a contract in front of him for 2026. See what happens.
I would think this article has something to do with his management pushing the Broncos to get his future sorted asap.

Richo would have verbalised an offer to get him asap. His management are doing their job either way for their client.

Ok you won't release me this year, fine. But I want to secure my future, this is what is being through about, can you match it? No, okay I'll sign elsewhere... I would say pretty standard for most of contract players. It's just with Kobe now it has media attention so why not ride it for a good deal.

That's my 2 cents anyway.

Man that’s a bit rich . The club has allowed him multiple times to go back home , and have been really accommodating re. His well known issues/ reluctance to spend too much time away form his kids. ( which is fair enough , probably points to the idea that John has his priorities right ) .
I guess it’s a lesson in biting the hand that feeds you .
I just can’t believe it’s that un- salvageable.
It really just comes down to desire , and willingness to put your ego aside

I think also , you can miss your opportunity. Right now , i think most people see that the tigers are on the dawn of something .
And Kobe has been offered the lock role in that team . With Tyrone may taking the roster spot , you’d think the opportunity to start in a team that’s clearly on the up , and the fact that opportunity might not be there in a years time , probably is driving his manager to want a response sooner than later .

Employee mentality...what's an extra day right? Yet if you were docked a days pay you'd be the first at Fair Work.

The guy is on thin ice from his outburst during the season and suffered from poor form.

He is not exactly a model employee to be getting favours from the club.

Whether you like him or not or agree with the clubs actions, the sooner he goes, the less distraction there will be for the season. It's clearly become toxic.

and he is playing the game by just basing it off the contract.
so the tigers are also playing the game and will be petty to make him break it.
fk the guy.

it free's up a spot for sione
Absolutely.

But does that mean Sione upgrades the second row position?

Don't get me wrong- I'm of the belief that the club needs to manufacture some position flexibility out of Sione Fainu, Pole, Matamua &/or Kit Lualili'i. We are stacked with 'almost there' middles.

One, or 2 of these guys needs to be like Seyfarth & have the ability to handle the middle & the edge.

If we can get that from these players, then yes- letting Bateman go means we could be 'better'.

I'm all for removing distractions & moving players that don't fit, on. But....if all we achieve is downgrading the quality of the squad...all avenues need to be explored first.

I agree with what you're saying
I just think we are running out of time and this Bateman saga needs to end.
IF that means we simply straight swap him with Sionie I don't really care about the direct replacement, because we don't need the negative atmosphere that bateman will bring with him.
We'd be better off working out how to utilise what we have to cover the gap.

I mean...we could always get Liam Knight....that should cause a board meltdown. 😀
