Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

The issue with Galvin is his dad .. he's a greedy little turd .. he has been asking the manager how much will Lachie get on the market .. he has been asking the manager to make inquiries with Rorters, Parra, Souths and Sharkies .. he is looking for top dollar for his son.

A quick little jab at Bateman from an Army buddy up at Lavarack Barracks Townsville .. when John and wife and child moved into their brand new house Townsville .. after a few days John and wife complained how hot it was inside the house even though it was a brand new build .. double glazed windows, super insulated with a huge air-con .. John demanded that they put in another air-con unit to help cool the house. He doesnt like the heat the poor bugger. My mate said they saw Mrs Bateman picking up little Johnny up from training and they said even though it was hot day .. she made it even hotter .. then one commented that they hope Jonathon "sticky fingers" Thurston does see her .. i cracked up over that comment .. lol

Good to see big Royce Hunt looking super fit .. boys have been putting in hard over the off season .. hopefully the hard pre season training will prepare us well for the season .. since Luai and Turuva have arrived everyone has been lifting their training patterns and really putting in onfield training drills and working really hard in the COE gym .. !!

Starfod To'a is training the house down now fully over his injuries from last season .. dont be surprised if he is one of our starting centres come RD1.
Hope your right about To'a mop it's time for him to stand and deliver fingers crossed he is over his injuries poor run.

An extremely fit and dedicated Starford To’a is a much better player than many of us think he is.
I do agree it would be nice to see it more than a couple of times per season to really be convinced.
Rugby League Guru done his predicted Wests Tigers 2025 team line up yesterday and for someone who doesn’t support the club, his knowledge of our players was very good and interesting to hear how general rugby league supporters such as him rate sone of our players such as To’a, Doueihi and Seyfarth more highly than what many of our own fans do.
He did leave To’a out of his best 17 for us, but stated a fit and healthy To’a is definite NRL standard.

To'a is 25 this year reaching his prime years now it's his time has reasonable pace also can remember some good tries scored in the past.

I consider what Galvin is not:

I doubt he will be a halfback. He has some good organisational and leadership qualities, but I don't see him as being like Clearly/Cronk/strong squad organiser and he won't be if he stays here.

Galvin isn't a kicker, from what I have seen. Being able to position and time kicks is a key skill in the Halves.

Flip it Galvin seems to have extreme physical fitness and a NRL footy head. Like a ball playing Chris Lawrence. Could develop into a Munster like player.

So how much do we pay him?
600k is Turuva money, but we need a 5/8.
800k is good prop money. I kinda consider this 2 signings.
1000k is "gun" money. You expect a player who wins games.
over that is crazy money.

800k is a lot of cap space, 1m is close to us signing an AFB style forward or two good backs. When you have Latu Fainu already on the books for 500k ... It's very hard to justify going above 800k.

That said, I see Galvin taking the field in every game.
Reckon he could become an Isaiah Yeo type player in the second row once he fills out, or am I crazy.

On Galvin.

We have seen some glimpses, but we have Luai as the main man and Fainu as a quality half also.

There is no point in blowing our cap on a guy that is non-commital to the club. The offers are not going to be the sticking point. It will be the results on the field.

Let's just start winning and either he signs, or another player will see we are on the up and join us.

Penrith, Melbourne, Roosters etc. Lose good players all the time and it doesn't affect their results. Basing a team around one player is asking for trouble. What if they get injured? What if they have rep duty?

We need a winning system over one or two great players.

Agreed...

If we start winning and have a spine of Bula, Laui and Api it won't be hard to replace Galvin on a team on the up. If he doesn't commit, I say give the 6 jumper to Latu and see how that goes.

No one is bigger than the team especially a guy that has played 1 season.

Someone will offer him 700K and he's not worth it yet maybe in the future we need a gun number 11

I think we might to need to and that’s not a good thing…
It’s not good for him from a development viewpoint - when you get everything you want before you’ve earned it, changes appear in your drive and mentality toward things.
It’s going to cause us to force others out - some will say we will finish getting rid of deadwood, however we still need to replace them. It will cost us players we want to keep too.
It’s going to set a precedent that will be very difficult to upkeep for subsequent contracts - the chances of him being a Tiger for life will drop to almost zero. If he ends up as good as people are predicting, that will sting in the future.
I like how Penrith solves these problems.
Keep 1-3 good players and have enough good juniors you can punt the rest. (i.e. Cleary)

Storm - Damn tough training environment. Someone leaves, next psychopath takes their place.

Easts - Suallii, the plan was to sign him and that their training environment was so good he would stay. In fairness, many players stay there for unders... I have no idea why.

Cronulla/Manly - Train on the beach.

..

How do we get young players to join us, without playing the "they gave you 900k, we will give you 1m" cap dance game?

I don't think you can call last season "swapping back and forth a few times". His season was well and truly a disaster before Rd 21 when he played his first game on the wing in 2024.

He played 21 games for the Broncos as follows:

Centre (17 games)
Pre-Season Challenge
Rd 1-10
Rd 12
Rd14-15
Rd 17-18
Rd 27

Fullback (1 game)
Rd 11

Wing (3 games)
Rd 21
Rd 25
Rd 26

Did Not Play
Rd 13
Rd 16
Rd 19
Rd 20
Rd 22
Rd 23
Rd 24

See link below
Selwyn Cobbo Career Games

He played the majority of last season at Centre in 2024. He was only swapped to the wing, right at the end of the season, so that should have played zero factor in his form until Rd 21.

In 2023, he played the whole season on the wing and scored piles of tries. So he can play both positions. There are many players that can play both. Most centres and wingers will have swapped between positions before, particularly if you've been playing footy a long time. Different jobs, yes. Beyond players to be versatile enough to cover both, no.
I started out on the wing and then moved to centre.

My career stats:
Wing - a bit
Fullback - majority
Centre - 1 game

... I was not a good centre... 😐

Something Gus Gould said when he was at Penrith.
Can't remember the player, but "he can kick, he is built like a prop, he can play ball and he can tackle.
...
So how do we train/develop such a player?"
Talking about a player similar to Luke Lewis. i.e. do you train him up to be a Nr7 as he was playing that exact position. OR do you say your big enough to be a prop, be a prop OR do you say your journey is NR11/lock and that's where were putting you.

It seems to me Galvin wanted to be 5/8 and wouldn't accept Center. IMHO we needed a solid Center and can usually bring up a 5/8. Heck with Benji, Inglis and Luai around surely we can develop/train our own 5/8's?

It depends on the individual doesn't it. Some players are adaptable and can play a variety of positions. Others have specialist skillsets that make them good in one position.

I moved from #6 to centre and it ruined my career. I was a ball player, created chances, had the vision to set up others with my passing and kicking game, controlled the set from start to finish, directing the forwards around and where I'd want them to go.

It was just too chalk and cheese for me, when I'd spent my whole junior career in one position. I effectively became a wide ball player, which isnt what you want from a centre. Defence was solid, but all in all it was a failure...

It's like Douhei in the centres, it just makes him look like a sh1t footy player, when he's not. He's just out of position.

I dunno if it's been mentioned anywhere but NRL All star squads/teams whatever have been announced. Out of Tigers players Brent Naden (Indigenous) and Royce Hunt (Maori) will be playing (and technically Jayden Sullivan as he's still contracted for at least 2027 I think).

Maori side looks pretty strong and should probably win.
