LIVE GAME Round 3 vs Dolphins

Live Game Discussion
Rewatching the Game now,

There were a ton of mistakes which lead me to believe there is a lot of improvement in our team.

Bird has quietly been going about his business. I feel like the majority of time when he’s been on the field this season, we’ve either been on top or right in the arm wrestle.

It’s a cliche, but he’s just a winner.
He's changed the tempo of the game each time he has come on.

Who was there? My son was crying at 18-6 / he lifted as we did. His first win live. I was ready to rush the field. Security guards didn’t like me. I was in hearland dolphins territory after we got out of the Sun. Kayo is an average stadium. I made lots of noise outside of the tigers bunker. A stressfull
44th bday, but worth it. We have loads of snaps post game and caught the boys for a set of pics with the kids before kick off. It’s an awesome ground and all. But the replay is so different to the limited footy in saw live
What a great birthday. 😍

Yep, I'm not getting ahead of myself either. We've seen early season success before, only to fall out of the top 8 soon after.

In 2018, we were also 4th on the ladder by the end of round 6 with 5 wins and 1 loss. By round 13, we were out of the top 8 at 9th place.

I was at a 60th birthday celebration so didn't catch the game live - just getting the NRL.com feed intermittently. I usually avoid this thread until ater I have watched the replay. However today I decided to read the live part of this thread first to get a feel for what I should be focussed on.

I expected to see some really poor defensive decisions from Toa, Galvin running around like a chook with his head cut off and making several poor kick choices, a lack of invovement from Sam F and a generally disorganised and bumbling effort. I expected that we were similar tot he first 20 minutes agaisnt Parra and were just hanging in. I thought that we were just wating for the dam wall to burst as the Dolphins were so dominant and that we turned it all around in the second half. The other thing I expected to see was some superhuman effort from TDS for his try.

Well how wrong was that impression. While Katoa and Nikorima did make a couple of inroads our scramble dealt with most incursions. The points for the Phins came from a coupe of defensive misreads but for the most part the defensive system is sound, our line speed is good (but not great) our slide defence is working well and our up and in scramble in our red zone is working for the most part.

The first Dolphins try was not on Toa at all. The system broke down when Tito did not follow Toa up and in. While it looked like Toa had rushed up it was Taruva sitting back and waving his arms that caused the try. If he had come up and jammed the next player Bula would not have to hold up to cover the inside man and would have had the time, momentum and sideline available to deal with it. The scond try came from a defensiv misread but the inside pressure was not there to cover the error. May should have shut the gate but didn't. The Nikorima try may have been called for a double movement on another day with a different ref but for mine momentum carried him over so wasn't too dissapointed.

In attack our edges were being used more; you can see the combinations developing. We are still making errors but it was less clunky again than it was last week. The effort and commitment from the players is something I haven't seen in our team for a number of years.

As an avid AD knocker, I have to give him a shout out for his defensive decisions today; he is playing the system and it is working. While he made some good defensive decision he still lacks drive. We want players who are prepared to do the 1%ers for the team and their mates - AD for the most part only gives about 95%; there is no effort to get ot his feet quickly, he showed no desire to get to any spilt balls and if he has made an attempt to tackle that is where his effort ends. He needs to etiher pick up his game or he can go - he is not the player we need. He talks about leadership but has no idea what that really is. I think his goal kicking and talk are keeping him in the team at the moment.

A good win through graft; not brilliant, plenty of mistakes to be ironed out but definitely improving. Whahs at home is another winnable game - if we can get the job done that would be the frist time we have won three in a row since 2021.

Really solid win. Actually the sort of win the top teams achieve. We didn’t play our best and the opposition turned up and played well but we still managed to win the game. It’s tough to remember the last time I was able to say that!
24 unanswered points against a team that was performing very well for the first 30 mins shows discipline, resilience and patience.
A game we generally loose by 40, and i nearly got my 13+ 🤯

For some reason, T'oa carries some legacy hate but he's been excellent this season. Someone earlier mentioned Herbie getting over him but T'oa had him covered in defence. It was his running up the middle that caused most problems, not out wide. Herbie is a superstar BTW. Turuva scoring 5 tries in 2 games has a lot to do with what T'oa is doing right.

But 9th place is pretty good. 🤣

I did the same.with the reserve grade game....reading the comments.about the game then saw that we had won....this game apparently was the worst game.in the history of rugby league.
I know the end result and performance during the game.are very different but I thought this highly amusing

It was realy interesting to watch the game having read the live game thread first. I had in my mind Toa really stinking it up and us playing like the Tigers of old. I also thought Toa did a good job and is proving good service to Tito. He is not a worl beater, but injury free outside of some creative halves he is definitely serviceable.
