Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Well it’s not really a win. This kid has 15 or more NRL seasons ahead of him and is a natural footballer. I don’t like him as a half, but there’s zero doubt he can play the game…possibly at an elite level one day.
It also seems unlikely this decision is money based. That’s a critique of this club by one of the hottest young prospects we’ve seen in years.
Also….Im finding it really hard to believe he is going to Parra. I reckon Penrith may find some wiggle room. His old mate Blaize is no good,
So if he is not a half it complicates the decision of what is the right salary cap investment. If Latu can do a better job at half the cost the money should be invested on the edges where it is needed. Galvan is a few years away from being a value spend on an edge. All clubs lose players due to the salary cap puzzle.

Getting the extention done now takes the huge and ongoing distraction of the table. It was totally legitimate to want to get it done. It's totally normal to negotiate before a player goes on the open market.

Additionally getting it done allow a decision on how to develop Latu - who to invest in.
The club were very well aware that the kid had huge concerns about staying with us. Knowing this, the retention strategy should have followed bespoke workings. We had to prove to him that this club was on the rise. At this stage of the season it was premature.
As far Latu, yes that’s a silver lining however I doubt that was a factor. He has always been second fiddle to Lachlan despite being the better half.

Another reason to have waited.

The fact that Moses said don’t even bother putting an offer means he was always going… whether it was now or in 6 months the answer was always going to be the same. I’m glad the club got clarity early & is now in a position to plan effectively moving forward.
Yes I agree that was likely going to be the answer this week. Depending on the season progress, he may not have said that in November.

So Penrith wouldn’t play a proven performer, culturally important squad member and long term partner to Cleary more than $800K, but will pay Galvin, who hasn’t really proven anything yet more than his potential and has no history / partnership with Cleary around $1M??

Maybe an acknowledgment they got it wrong letting Luia leave.

It will also be a couple of years later. The cap changes and player movements makes your point moot.

Im pretty confident be won't he another Ash Taylor. Taylor made a really poor career decision by taking the money and heading to the Gold Coast.

Say what you want about Galvin but this doesnt seem to be about money. If he isn't totally full of BS he is actually doing the oppposite of what Taylor did and trying to get himself into a strong team/system likely for less money, thats why I think he will sign for the Dogs.

I will always hate Galvin for leaving especially the way he has torched Benji on the way out. I would love nothing more than for him to fail at a club like the Eels with Moses. But liking him to Ash Taylor is wishful thinking
For sure not a 1:1 comparison but what i meant was there have been a litany of young stars (particulary halves) that show good signs, look like game breakers and then just fade out into background. Guys like Anthony Milford, Tim Smith, Luke Brooks 😅.
I agree Gals a gun player, but how does he go under pressure? He's gonna have a fair bit of attention this weekend if he does end up playing, will be interested to see how he goes.

Yeah, I heard a radio grab of Chammas talking about the situation and was prepared to hear how Moses is the worlds most compassionate manager . . . but he actually spoke in support of our side of the argument.
Chammas hates Moses . I just think he’s also angry with Benji as well . Benjis culture when he took over of shutting out the journos , has affected Chammas more than anyone . Chammas was. Basically in the locker room at this club for years and now buzz Rothfield gets news at time before he does .
at the end of the day , he’s got an agenda . I also think he had half a story and formed an opinion on it , that’s turned out to change the complexion ie. the players dropped Galvin . Now it’s turned out to be Benji , with the players approval , the narrative is different .

I think it was perfect timing.
I would imagine our players already knew about Galvin’s lunch dates with Mitchell Moses and although it’s only 6 games into the season, it was there for all to see the club was on the improve which what Galvin was rumoured to previously be wanting to see.
The playing in a successful team now appears to not matter to him seeing it’s quite clear the Eeks are his club of choice.
Nevervthe less we have revealed the truth and in doing so have united our playing group and supporter base, so it’s a win for Wests Tigers.
I said it before , we were upping galvins contract to 1mil for 2026 . That means we can’t do anything with the extra 650k until he makes his decision. They could have screwed the club around until February . That would have killed our offseason , as we just proved , we do our best work with recruitment between nov-feb . So the immediacy of it is really pertinent , as that’s literally a Terrell May that might come on the market that we can’t sign .
Plus I’m highly confident that Richo knew about the “contract from the eels” . He knows a lot of people in the game , and people talk . I reckon the Galvin team probably wanted to string us along until nov , come out and say benji can’t coach with a now 10-15 dot point grievance dossier and a signed contract with the eels .
doing it now is a good thing . It freed up the money for 2026 and allows us to up the whole squad who we want to keep in the long term .

The intention was to never sign. If Richo had an inkling he was coming with seven grievances about the coach to justify not even presenting a 6 mil contract to his client then can guarantee that no meeting would have been held or contract drawn up.
The sympathy is all to do with the possibility of getting a piece of the talent. No average 19 year old would be offered the level of sympathy for such behaviour. And the message now is his talent excuses it.
Is it any wonder players who wear the jersey
and have achieved the success that Lachy is seeking are off him?

Yes I agree that was likely going to be the answer this week. Depending on the season progress, he may not have said that in November.
I agree he'd be more likely to re-sign if we're more successful this year, but there's no certainty he will change his mind and his history of release requests and carry on probably gave Richo a sense it wasn't ever happening. They've probably had enough conversations with family and player to understand that.

You just don't want the club dragged through an even bigger mess after investing another season in a raw Galvin in the halves when he doesn't even want to be here.

Get an offer in, even if it means you're less likely to have it accepted, and stop the stupid games and commotion that Moses tries at clubs. Keep in mind they were already at it only last year with release requests, rumours and big media circus. It's just an unnecessary ticking time bomb waiting to happen. Now the direction of club and player is clear and if Moses starts commotion there's no bargaining chip to use against the club.

I think it's unusual for this to all be done so early, but the club has to make decisions about their future halves, it's too critical to put off with contracts and players futures all interconnected. Like keeping doueihi now seems much more important where we were rumoured to be offering him to st George in the offseason.

So I get your point, that patience makes it more likely, but that was probably extremely unlikely, especially if luai and Galvin weren't gelling, so it's right that the club made a decision now. You only have to look back to Mitchell Moses to see what dragging this out can look like.

I understand the risk, but Richo’s job is to find a way to get the deal done. I don’t think this approach had much chance of succeeding.

I still think this whole thing is about Latu Fainu . If you read the tea leaves about the timeline , His first request for release was when we signed the Fainus .
And when you look at Fainu , and the way he plays he’s better than Galvin at being a half . He just is !
Chuck in their history ie. that Fainu was the one who kept him out at the eels im almost certain before he went to manly , Fainu was the one who kept him out of rep jerseys in age groups in the 6 jersey , and now Fainu has come to the nrl team , and whilst Galvin had the inside line , with all the noise in the playing group that Fainu is a better fit , I’m almost certain when they say he won’t develop here , I think they really mean Latu is going to take my place in the halves and I’ll be a lock .
It’s the only thing that actually makes the development angle make sense . And why his dad and manager are pushing this .
Because yes Benji has Lachies back , but eventually Latu will grab that 6 jersey , and everyone who actually knows the game knows that’s eventually going to happen . It’s why the club under sheens and now Benji has him forecast as a lock eventually . I guess Galvin doesn’t want that . And really … that’s fair enough . You don’t need to torpedo the club though to get it .
