Alex Seyfarth #232

Seyfarth last night proved he is not a starting first grade player, like the bloke is a goer but there is no end product that warrants the minutes he plays.

Seyfarth is a real goer. Hard working player and a good athlete at his size. Lacks game awareness, errors and bad defensive reads on an edge. Mason and Seyfarth will become excellent bench players in short bursts. He should not be starting at second row.

I have always said Seyfarth is a decent bench player and he is,the problem is we are starting him due to lack of a better option. If he is on the bench each week because we have a better starter much of the vitriol directed at him will cease.

He is a middle defender option at best anything else and he adds no value.

He over plays his defensive work when wider and it costs him and us often in other ways (positional, meters, lethargic, reset etc).

He does currently hold the record within the NRL as the worst meter gaining forward in the history of the game for minutes and games played.

We need to stop getting distracted from effort and focus on quality of the effort.

I remember a few years ago, Sam Mcyntire walking off at half time, head covered in blood. He was in no hurry to get back in and get it cleaned up.
That kid has some ticka hey.
I remember we let go the only player who could tackle above his weight grade and I know for fact he wanted to stay. He is no superstar but a decent footballer you could rely on.

He has good scramble defence. His contact is getting a little better. Still missing heaps of tackles. Non-existent in attack although did have a hand in a try.
Non-existant in attack, except he crossed the line for us.

I see him crossing or being close to crossing and he seems to have that sense for the tryline.
That's rare in the front row. That's what we need in the front row.

Yes he moved in with that tackle on Papalii, but it's Papalii and he probably would have rampaged through if he did not move in.

Credit where credit is due.

Well he was replaced with a Prop for the last 20mins of the game. Hopefully that’s saying something.
There was also a point in the game following the Tapine try where Samuela moved across to defend with Mason on the line, once we were back in attack the original formation was back.
Hard to say Seyfarth needs a rest coming off a bye but I think to the Bench is a change at a minimum.

Thought Twal had covered Papali’i he needed to trust that and stay on Tapine in my opinion.

On nine they mentioned mason. Wasn’t really listening well but I think they thought he missed his assignment
my thoughts seyfarth probably should of got to him but haven’t watched again
He did score a try and linked for another though

Tapine's try was disgraceful defending by both Seyfarth and Mason. Seyfarth did nothing - he either had to go full in on Papalli and try and stop the pass or he had to slide across to cover the gaping hole left by Mason rushing up on Fogarty. He did neither and was virtually a statue as Tapine ran past. Masons hand in the try was just as pathetic - rushed out of the line to create the gap then puts his hands on his head after Tapine runs past. THose two should never be defending next to each other.

The second try - Seyfarth and Mason again missed crucial tackles on Weekes that saw the raiders run 70 mtrs downfield and score from the next set against a retreating and disorganised defence. The third try was another terrible miss by Mason and finished with a schoolboy error by Skelton in not grounding the ball instead of trying some miracle pickup.

I see our backrowers defending well out of position a lot. One time last night Sam and Alex made a tackle together. That's insanity. Sukkar offers more punch in attack and defence.

We needs to structure our pack where Seyfarth mostly plays middle in KOE cup with the odd game off the bench in the NRL when we have injuries.

What you and Bellend are saying is right.

I like Seyfarth and IMHO he has risen and improved from 2024.
But we are playing all our front row for longer stretches.

We can't keep having a back and a hooker on our bench.

We culled 4 forwards for 2. Yes May has risen, hunt did well at the start and needs repair now. But we banked the farm on 2 forwards working and it's been May's performance that has made that work.

Jack Bird is the ideal reserve, who can step up to the front row or cover the backs. Yet we keep using him in other capacities and not as back cover so we can have more oomph on the bench.

I just don't know what were doing, we got super lucky that May is an absolute gun. We really need a first grade Prop, Lock or 2nd row .

It’s probably a little more complicated. The defender inside Twal was slow. That leaves Twal 1 on 1 post initial contact, hence Seyfarth turning in to be second contact.

Then compounding that Mason rushes Fogarty despite not needing too. Seyfarth obviously had no call from Mason as he didn’t even know there was a gapping hole on the outside of him.

On first look I was screaming at my TV about Seyfarth, looking again I think it’s both Mason and Seyfarth that get it wrong and no help from the inside.

Always loved Seyfarth and wanted him on the edge for the longest time….but please forget about it moving forward he has zero ability to defend out wide…he’s a good club middle and that’s it

I think he’ll stay play a part in our squad but he’s no edge and will never be a star forward(that’s ok as long as Benji recognises this and uses him accordingly)

You want your edges to have some potency. He’s wet lettuce.

I like Seyfarth.

But he didn't even see Tapine coming, because he only looked right after Papali'i had sucked him in & passed.

Mason was so out of position he may as well have been playing for the Raiders.

It was bad defending all around.

Particularly as Tapine is clearly a greater running threat than Papali'i these days.
