Is The Club Respected?

Yesterday wasn’t just another bad loss. It felt like a reality check about where this club sits in the NRL. And it made me wonder if we have any respect at all? I’m talking about how the club is viewed by players, rival clubs and even its own roster. Take Luai. He arrived and was supposed to be the signing who changed the culture. He was here to be Batman. Instead, we’re halfway through his second season and what have we actually got from him? Two good games if you want to be generous, and already an announcement that he’s bailing for even more money.

Then there’s Terrell May comments this week. He openly said his loyalty isn’t to Wests Tigers, it’s to Benji Marshall. As long as Benji is there, he’s there. I suppose on one hand, you can appreciate the honesty. However, it seems his relationship with the club actually paying him is dependent on the choice of coach he gets along with. And the worst part, I don’t think he’s an isolated case amongst the playing group. I think most think that way. And the fact the club feels they need to sign their siblings to keep them happy tells me the club has no spine. To me, respected clubs create loyalty to the jersey and the organisation. Players come and go, coaches come and go, but the club remains bigger than any one person. For a while. it feels like we have relied on personal relationships rather than institutional strength. If you’re going to play finals and win premierships that way, hey, whatever works. But we are perennial failures, and this strategy of creating a brotherhood, while it may be good for team morale and creating bonds that go beyond footy. It’s not something that’s going to get you to the promised land all by itself. And it seems to be what Benji has gone all in on, because he doesn’t bring much else to the table as a first grade coach.
Great post GNR and some very good questions. I have no answer, as I’m sure none of us on here really do either.

I see us a bit like the Sydney version of the Gold Coast. Lots of promise of culture change spanning many years, roster changes, coach changes, some good players added, but still no success. Some clubs are just here to make up the numbers in the NRL, sadly we are one of them.

Penrith is a champion side. I'm not one to get bent out of shape about the score. A loss is a loss and Marshall was correct in his assessment.
You do realise we have been THAT team to lose by the largest margin over the course of a season for I don’t know how many years running now. I’m sorry but that just stinks of a rotten core.

Yes Penrith are great, but St George who had not won a game at all when they played them managed to keep them under 30 points AND they actually scored a couple of tries as well. There is no excuse for what happened yesterday, yet we do it every season without fail and 4 times already this season! Yay for us 🥳

The Dogs beat them. Yes, we had a few out, but are those outs significant enough for Penrith to rack up a record breaking score? Even by their standards?

I think we are, more recently anyway but other clubs know we are battlers. That was a near a reserve grade team playing yesterday up agianst a goliath.

We have to find some cash to invest in our footy team, and that's obviously very hard to do.

Junior programs are a very tough way to get our of a hole, we need to make more money or we'll always struggle.

We played one of the best teams in the modern era with not one injury. We are missing our best forward , our best half and our best second rower. A team like the tigers needs luck and we aren’t getting any . I feel some supporters are waitirn for this day to death ride Benji and the team. But we have come in leaps and bounds this year . Anyone not seeing that is delusional
If a team needs luck to even just compete with another team, no matter what team it is, then we’re in the wrong competition.

Our roster is building nicely . We have had key injuries or suspensions to our 1,3,6,9,10,11. Players who are our best and are in form. Had we had our full team on paper we would have atleast 2 more wins to our name. So yes we do need luck

The club isnt entitled to anyones respect after 3 spoons, the general dysfunction, lack of resourcing and the general softness. Why would they be?

Im disappointed as anyone by yesterday but 6-6 but the season is far from gone.

On a totally separate note a few here seem to bizarrely thrive on performances like yesterday.

I really feel sorry for the NRL, who committed to match The Storm vs the WTs in Vegas in the 2027 Season Launch. Save everyone the time, money & effort and give us the Bye again!

Well said!! It’s like they’ve forgotten the amazing wins we’ve had and are more worried about “i told you so”.

We have pretty much kept every player we wanted to keep (Bula , May’s, makasini, doueihi, twal) this never happens!! We are heading in the right direction , and hopefully we see semi final footy this year !!!!

Fair. We did have a few out. Any side that has a few out will naturally concede 68 points.
Dunno about that - has anyone conceded that many points this year?
And if they have, what are the expectations for that squad this year against the expectations for ours?

Surely we’re topping the last months negative for and against…

We can only hope - most of the sides below us on the ladder have played more games.
Storm still have the 2 byes we’ve already had.

With the for and against we’ve accumulated over the last month - finals is all but out of the question now

Your logic isn't making me feel good B.
It sucks mate,
I didn’t get as carried away as some early in the season, but thought with a bit of luck - we could sling the bottom of the 8 when it mattered.

We’re shit out of luck, I don’t see us getting better - and teams like the storm and cows have more in the tank than we do.

Luck, what's that when it comes to our team, last year with some improvement we had hardly any injuries and this year it's like the black plague went through the joint.

Was feeling really good before the injuries, should have been more reserved given our history to disappoint.

It’s as though the gravity of a loss like that doesn’t have any impact on them, they treat it just like another loss. And it almost seems like they go into matches with the comfort that they can lose because they have an excuse with missing players. Then their expectations are met during the game when the opposition take ascendancy and they just roll with it and allow it to become a blowout. Because it doesn’t matter to them, it’s just a loss. That’s all I can glean from them allowing something like that to happen.

In the minds of some , one of the worst losses in the clubs history is explained away by ,.,” oh well we had 4-5 out..it was inevitable “…
