Penrith Panthers is deeply saddened by the passing of club legend John Farragher OAM.

Born in Gilgandra, John’s journey with the Panthers began on the field, where he played as a powerful prop forward. In 1978, only seven games into his first-grade career, John suffered a life-changing spinal injury when a scrum collapsed at Henson Park. At just 21 years of age, he was left a quadriplegic.

Bit of a surprise. Well thought of out this way and I'm pretty sure his son has a fair bit to do with Panthers in one way or another ( development maybe) Sad what happened to him but Penrith certainly looked after him. RIP
 
Very sad. My kids grew up calling him "Mr John". He was a very nice man. Tim Sheens will be devastated. He was packed in the front row of that scrum in 1978 ... very, very sad 😔

RIP Johnny. I hope my Nan was waiting at the pearly gates with a huge hug for you. She adored you ❤️

I was wrong. I was only 10 when John was injured, and had only heard second-hand from my parents that Tim was packed next to him. He was on the sideline, per the article below. My earliest memory of Tim, though, was him knocking on our door with an old canvas bank coin bag, collecting money for John. I do remember him being absolutely shattered, and mum giving him a cuppa and a sandwich because he was in shock.
