Don't know what to think of the possible rule change, on the fence, in some other sports the possession goes to who was scored against.
Why should who scored get the possession, it could even the contest up and besides if you wanted the ball back you could go for a short kick off and contest for the ball.
Well I guess it's not so black and white after all!
Let's say there's not a grey area, it's an orange area in between. 😜
I think in most major team sports possession goes to the team scored against. Football/soccer, basketball, gridiron.
There's volleyball (which is just weird), and others have a 50/50 restart such as a ball up (afl) , face off (ice hockey), or just they get it in turns - racquet sports, bat and ball sports. But the turn ones are completely irrelevant to league and would be ridiculous outside under 8's.
As I said, both cases have a lot of really valid, hard to argue/counter reasons.
My main issue is if a team has great attack, kicks off (giving possession), but then just can't stop the opposition breaking through out wide for whatever reason (they're just shit, injuries...) they'll (theoretically) never get the ball, and a game that could turn into an attacking cliffhanger - maybe the other team can't stop them through the middle? - turns into a bloodbath....
But devils advocate says as it stands, possession almost always has a weird knack of evening out!
A 60/40 advantage will 90% equate to a comfortable win... That's only a 10% swing, or 8 minutes. Which in my view is very reasonable cause to leave it as it is.
There's also the fact a team kicking off can go the union style high ball. But frankly I'm tired of teams not breaking the 10m plane or kicking it out on the full with barely any repercussion.
I'm actually fine either way (I'm obviously orange as well; Starting to look like a chocolate factory here! 🤣) until there is evidence changing it will even it out even more.
Super League used it, but that only lasted a single season almost 30 years ago (1997). And it wasn't an even comp with teams like the Broncos playing the Adelaide Rams, Hunter Mariners, Perth (formerly Western) Reds...
The chances of trialling it are so limited. You can't go the route the nrl did with the first female refs and bring it in for games between teams having no mathematical chance of playing finals because it would have a greater impact on the game.
For those teams at or near the bottom of the ladder, wins and losses may not affect their finals chances, but a wooden spoon can cost a coach his job.
Omg. I really didn't mean this to be this long...
In the end, my personal choice would be scoring team kicks off, but it really is something that doesn't
need to change, so I completely understand people wanting them to stop changing things.
