With the SCG being used for the last time on September 25, 1987 as a venue for Rugby League grand finals, these 5 legends from past battles gathered at the historic ground for one last photograph.

They are Arthur Summons, Bernie Purcell, Norman Provan, Keith Barnes, Johnny Raper.

The great Ken Irvine, back in the day .......
And this was no ordinary day:

"The day Norths left the field" refers to a famous and controversial rugby league incident that took place on July 12, 1970. During a tense match between the North Sydney Bears and the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Belmore Sports Ground, Norths’ captain Ken Irvine (a legendary winger) pulled his team off the field in protest of referee Keith Page’s decisions.
The walk-off, which culminated in a heated dispute with officials, meant several things to the sport:
  • Player Frustration: Irvine and his team believed the referee was making consistently biased and unfair calls against them in a tight, rough match.
  • Disciplinary Consequences: Walking off the field of play in protest is largely unheard of in top-tier rugby league. Because of the walk-off, Irvine and other Norths players were handed suspensions by the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) for misconduct.
  • A Shorthand Legacy: In the decades since, "the day Norths left the field" remains a legendary piece of NSWRL folklore that symbolizes the fierce competitive tempers of the era and the immense pressure placed on players and referees
Irvine's bold walk-off is one of the many storied, sometimes painful, moments in the long history of the North Sydney Bears, who were foundation members of the sport in 1908 and famously exited the premier competition after a merger in 1999.

Trivia - Ken was picked for State of Origin, Game #1, 1998, but his coach (and also his Wests club coach) Tom Raudonikis "forgot" to use him from the bench!
