18 Spots to Fill - 2020

It's also the same the other way if a player no longer wants to be at a Club asks to get out but the Club still wants them as they have a contract it generally ends with the player moving on…

Way too early to assume who Madge would and wouldn’t want. He may not even know himself yet. Probably smart to let the first 6-12 rounds play out in 2019\. By then we might get an idea of which players, if any are out of favour.

By then the season could be gone. Hopefully this time we have signed a coach who doesnt like wasting seasons.

Ideally Taylor, McQueen and Eisenhuth are able to get deals in England that will give them longer term security, and hence they’d be willing to leave early. It’d also be great if the dogs take back Reynolds (though doubt they’d be willing to pay $750k p.a.).

With reports that Klemmer wants out of the bulldogs, I wouldnt be surprised if the dogs pull out all their tricks to lure Reynolds back.

Dpesnt make sense though
Lose a rep forward to recruit a high risk half on big money too.
They have a good young half coming thru, theyd be better off signing two 500/600k players

Their fans will be livid and I know it doesn't make sense but it's just a hunch that this would be more about bringing some heart and soul back to their club

I don't think there's that many spots to fill when you look at the players we'll most likely re-sign, those 9 being

Aloiai, Brooks, Chee-Kam, Garner, Lawrence, Liddle, Mikaele, Smith and Thompson.

On top of that, you then have the 4 development players that are elevated to the top squad in 2020.

So really there's only 5 spots open for business. Madge might not re-sign a couple but the face of the squad will stay mainly intact, unless he puts the broom through.

While the numbers are high, the value may not be.

A lot of these players would be towards the bottom of the salary tiers, and if they improve, their value will increase.

A lot of the high value space will still be taken up by blokes like Packer, Matulino, Reynolds, Mbye, Nofa and McQueen who are on long term contracts.

Thanks again Ivan.

In defence of Ivan I didn't think the recruitment was that bad. Yes Reynolds wasn't ideally and we paid him overs. Packer is on 150k too much and needs to improve. Overall though in light of where we were its a decent starting spot. We need to get rid of 5-8 players but that will happen in time.

Looking at who is available, for what that’s worth, given based on contracts these days, pretty much everyone can be available, I guess we need to look at who we have coming off contract, so let's look at 2019

Based off Zero Tackle, we have 14 coming up at the end of 2019, so I’ll have a look at them here in a few different ways. None for me are definite keepers, but a lot are potentially, depends on how they go this year, especially on the younger ones who maybe get a bit more leniency on promise which should develop

Definitely not needed beyond 2019: 3
Benji and Robbie – love them both, they are club legends who have done a lot for us but this should be their swansong
Robbie Rochow, hasn’t done a lot for us and barring a major change this year, I think we would be happy to separate after 2019
So -3

Youngsters (22 or less) who will be evaluated this year: 6
Liddle, Mikaele, Garner, Dylan Smith, Sam McIntyre (could be 2020), Gamble – Pretty sure all or most will be with us beyond 2019\. Jury might be out most on Gamble
Maybe -1

Mid-career players (23-27) who have been pretty good to us, but let’s see this year:
Josh Aloiai, Mahe Fonua, Chee Kam – MCK would be the most likely to go among these for mine
Likely -1

Veterans (over 28), who still have something to offer: 2
Chris Lawrence, Corey Thompson – Rowdy should stay but his dollars and involvement will keep dropping back, Corey? Depends on who is coming through behind him, again he’ll be reliable but not big dollars
Maybe -1

Dividing that up by position, that’s:
Hookers - 2
Halves - 2
Props – 1 (Mikaele)
Backrowers – 5
Centre/Wing – 3
Fullback – 1

From the list of 14, it looks like we maybe part ways after 2019 with around 6, plus McQueen is 2020 and I’m guessing unless he fires big time quickly we’d be happy to work out an exit, but realistically he’d be a tough sell. Elijah Taylor is also 2020 and whilst he’s been great, if we could maybe we should

So that’s 6-8 spots we could free up going into 2020 when we are considering our recruitment for 2020 and beyond

Based on my thoughts and assuming we could part ways post 2019 with these two also the 8 would likely be:

Hooker: Robbie -1
Backrowers: -4 Rochow, MCK, McQueen, Taylor
Halves: -2 Benji, Gamble
Centres/Wing: -1 Thompson

Make of that what you will but assuming the mix of our squad is right, that would be what we need. Likely some will come from youngsters in the ranks so the number of potential recruits drops back further

Just my thoughts, I welcome others views

This will definitely be the final year at the club for Farah, Marshall, Lawrence, Taylor, Rochow, Fonua and Thompson. For the others off contract it will depend on performance this season.

Big call on Lawrence Airbus.

Isn’t there a concession for long serving players?

My understanding is that his contract is equivalent to that concession, and so costing nothing under the cap.

If he is willing to play on under similar terms, it would be a Greenberg display of stupidity to move him on.

Even as a backup, it would have less impact on the cap than signing someone on a minimum contract
