We all thought at the end of 83 that was the last we would see of Wests and Newtown. It's a miracle Wests survived. I think in 83 we still managed to beat Manly and Parra, the 83 grand finalists, both at Lidcombe Oval. Great days indeed :slight_smile:

I think '83 was also the year that Terry Lamb and Scott Gale rose to prominence. But after they left .... Well, the ensuing results in '84 says it all :frowning:

Watching the second half of this video brought back some disgusting memories.

As far as I can recall The motion to kick Wests out was seconded by Canterburys Peter Moore.

Remembering that Terry Lamb was under contact for 1984 so if Wests were booted out he would be a free agent.

League was never the same after that day. Canterbury disgusts me more than Manly.

We were not given a TV game in 83 or 84 and can"t recall a radio game. They had it in for us.

One can see the seemingly huge efforts they went to to get rid of Wests like League would prosper better without them,

That was interesting. I was a year old when that happened and had no knowledge of it whatsoever.. ( I was a Balmain supporter growing up)

Although whilst that was happening it must of been upsetting. It is incidents like that, that make a community grow and have a sense of pride.

In a way I feel the NRL by incorporating bigger areas it has lost its identity within the local community.

Look at Balmain, with the loss from its Leagues club, Im from a town called Bathurst and if its footy team ever went under there would be a huge outcry to prop it up. Just like it seems wests in 1983, and souths after the super league war.

I don't think it would or could happen in the cities these days.. But thats the cost of progress I suppose.
