1989 Grand Final

Went to the 89 GF, never watched the game again. Still haunts me to this day. 88 I was happy to make it to the GF. I’m a bit bitter all three officials missed the hit on Hanley. If Lamb got sent off it’s a much different game. Also no Blocker was a factor.
I only saw the hit for the first time yesterday. Heard about it for years, but never seen it. Different world back then. Not only would Lamb be sent today, they didn’t even stop play. Hanley is sprawled out on the ground, and it’s play on. The play even came back through him on the ground which the ref ignored. Then he’s carried off in la la land, and still the ref doesn’t have a care in the world. Imagine that today.

Has Lamb ever said anything about this?
Pretty shitty go

That's great footage; I recall the "official" match footage doesn't have the shot so clear (the camera switches) and I don't recall ever seeing the cheap shot so obviously. I don't recall replays at or after the actual match - Tigers made a line break and during those camera changes you can see Ellery lying flat out in the background.

There's a highlights package on NRL.com, doesn't include the high shot.

I knew the ref and his wife fairly well back then, she use to go to a few of his games. They were decent people, and I knew Mick to be a ref that tried to do his impartial best.
Hard to believe looking at that footage.
How about the care factor in the game back then?
“Get that injured player out of the way we are trying to play footy!! “ and that’s probably from the ref.

Gets replayed regularly on Fox...but to this day, I can't stand looking at it.
Just one of those things that stay with you a long, long time.
If not forever.

Some wounds never heal.
Still so much pain.

As a very young fan I felt my heart was ripped out.

I refuse to watch or discuss

Thread should be locked 😉
