TERRY Campese's hopes of resurrecting his NSW Origin career received a huge boost yesterday when he was named in coach Ricky Stuart's emerging Blues squad.

Campese, fellow Raiders playmaker Josh McCrone and feisty Warriors five-eighth James Maloney are the three most intriguing selections among this year's 23 hopefuls that Stuart believes can pressure his incumbents.

Despite having played just one half of football before re-injuring his knee last June, Campese has been given a heartening vote of confidence to earn an Origin recall from his lone appearance in 2009.

Stuart also showed enormous faith in the latest Blues scrumbase combination - Jamie Soward and Mitchell Pearce - during last year's series, keeping the pairing for all three games.

But the reality of a sixth straight series loss will again prompt debate over who should steer the NSW attack opposite Maroons duo Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk.

Focused on his long-awaited comeback in next month's Albury trial against Melbourne, Campese was not even aware the squad was on the verge of assembling until rumblings reached him earlier this week.

Along with Raiders teammates Jarrod Croker, Joel Thompson, Blake Ferguson and McCrone, the 27-year-old will travel up the Hume Highway to the Blues traditional base in Coogee next weekend.

Manly youngster Darcy Lussick, Titans excitement machine Ryan James and Tigers utility Tim Moltzen will be other notable attendees at the camp, which is also expected to include input from NSW greats such as Steve Roach and Trent Barrett.

"I've just been trying to work on my injuries and get back in the best possible shape for the trials, so I didn't even know about the camp," Campese told The Daily Telegraph last night.

"When I was told I was pretty surprised, but it's great to be in there. My focus is still definitely on coming back for Canberra, but a few of the other boys who went to last year's camp said it was really good to know you're on the radar," he said.

Stuart has significantly trimmed down the squad from last year's inaugural group, which numbered 51 players and included several Toyota Cup prodigies with zero NRL experience.

He's also put a greater focus on the front-row, another area the Blues have struggled to match their rivals - with the exception of skipper Paul Gallen's remarkable cameo in Origin II last year.

Of the 12 forwards selected, eight are props and Dragons bookend Trent Merrin is the only one with Origin experience.

Manly giant Tony Williams is another inclusion.

Flash Gordon in the emerging Blues squad? He's already played Origin!

first thing i thought, he is clearly above the rest of the players in the group

I really don't rate Jarrod Choker….

- spose in fairness there are fans from other teams out there who look at Ayshfords name and say "Who?"

I reckon Ayshford is the perfect right centre to mark up against Inglis… He is a good defender and has great counter attack. Perfect for Origin!

Campese has played origin before too. In all fairness they've only played 1 each.
I'd have Gordon in over Morris any day of the week. Morris would have to be one of the most overrated players in the competition.

If you're talking backs then I would have to agree but as a group in whole, Tariq Sims would be his equal in the forwards. Both should be playing Origin this year.

What frightens me with this squad is that Andrew "The Crab" Fifita was named even with his poor form at the back end of 2011 and his well known poor attitude.

A couple of surprise names in there, particularly Fifita, although I'll reserve judgement until I see him play for the Sharks. Not surprised at the Tigers players mentioned though. I reckon Groat will be added to that list this time next year. I'd honestly have Ayshford and Lawrence as my starting centres for NSW this year.

Big fan of Michael Gordon and would love to see him in a Wests Tigers Number 1 jumper goal kicking.

Also Sims on his 2011 form would be pressing for a bench spot.

I agree that Morris is over rated by he plays for St George whom the selectors like picking from.

Fifita is a big surprise. Most expertshave not picked him in Cronulla's best 17 this year.

Ashyford has apparently bulked up and with a good start to 2012 could find himself selected with Lawrence in the centres. His defence is needed against Inglis and Hodges.

Woods will play for NSW and Australia one day. Glad he plays for WT. Lock him up long term.

Agree that Groat and maybe BMM may be in this squad this time next year. Depending on their 2012 form

Actually I thought we had clarified that Woods was a Qlder

Didn't one of his relatives talk about visiting Mt Isa at one stage ??

BMM is currently aligned to the NZRL
