2013 - Positives & What Needs To Happen To Make The 8

Ok so with our current injury crisis I don't think it's all doom and gloom just YET. The NRL season is a very long one and while we haven't been playing great there have certainly been many positives we can take.

First of all, even though we are 2 from 7 we have beaten the teams we were expected to beat. That is important. In the past we sometimes struggle with these teams. Second of all, out of the 5 teams that have beaten us 2 of them are currently in the top 4 and 2 in the top 6\. We have lost against quality opposition. Third of all, even with our injuries we have managed to stay in games for a good 65+ minutes (Sea Eagles, Storm, Broncos & Dragons). Perhaps the biggest positive was the way we played against the Storm away. Nobody expected us to go close to winning that much yet we were leading that game with 20 minutes to go. I think that game proves that when we get our defense right, we can beat any team in the competition. It comes down to our attitude and over the last couple of weeks I really do believe our belief and attitude is slowly changing. We still adapting to a new coaching style and even though we haven't won for a while, to still have that determination is a positive sign.

Now in regards to positives for the team. I think now that Tedesco is going to be our fullback for the rest of the season this can only be a positive. As he slowly gets used to the grind of first grade and gains more and more confidence - watch out opposition teams! Having Korobeite back is also going to help us enormously by adding some speed in our backline which we are desperately lacking. I like Thompson at centre as I really think he can improve our defense and aggression there. I know some of you aren't a fan of him playing there or not a fan in general but please remember he is coming off a year ending injury and he has played centre before at the Titans so he knows what he is doing. Robbie Farah is in career best form. He is everywhere for us - making 50+ tackles a game and still setting up tries for us. Remember Benji & Braith still have to come back into the team so once this happens a lot of pressure will be taken off him and he will be able to play even better. Aaron Woods is just incredible. For his age to give us the go forward he gives us is irreplaceable.

Moving on to what needs to happen for us to make the 8\. If we want any chance to make the 8 we need to win either this week or next. We need to make sure we continue to stay in touch with the top 8 while we have so many injuries. Once our players come back and we are only say 2-6 points outside the top 8 then I really do think we could go on a winning streak and make it. But we really need a win soon for our team morale. I really do believe if we get a win with all the injuries we have it can really boost our team spirit and give us a lot of confidence in the coming weeks.

In all starts this week or next Tigers fans… Can the team turn the current injury crisis into a positive by sticking by one another and boosting the team spirit? I guess we will soon find out! Get ready!

IMO even if we get back to full strength this season we are NOT making the 8.

Use this year to gauge where the young blood is at, and develope for the future.

The next couple of years are going to be tough i think, but i do hope im wrong.

You make some good points, Luke, but the one thing you mentioned that has stood out for me is the change in attitude.

Considering what has happened to the side with injury and chopping and changing of players over the past 6 weeks, to be that close during matches against sides like Melbourne and Brisbane is quite amazing really. There are times when they have looked completely lost out there, for sure, and our defence is definitely not up to top 8 standard yet, but the way they have tried their best to hang in, only to be outclassed in the end, is very encouraging.

It's certainly a far cry from recent years when a near full strength WT side would take the field looking totally disinterested from the start and then completely give up, mentally, when things didn't go their way. Perhaps it's the injection of some fresh faces, a new coach and youth that has made the difference in attitude this year.

This is definitely the most positive sign for me in a what has been an awful start to the season. I really don't know if we will recover enough to make the 8 - I'm not expecting miracles. I'm probably more hopeful for next year, tbh, but if they can continue to give it their best in every game from here on, they will definitely jag a few wins or, at the very least, go down fighting. I'd be happy with that, at this stage, but I guess anything can happen if fortune ever decides to come our way.
