2015 season analysis

Right, season is over, let's see how it matched up against other WT seasons. These are FACTS; it is your interpretation that can be under debate.

2015 regular season, compared to other WT regular seasons (N = 16), was the:

- 2nd best win % for a first-year coach (33.33%). Junior Pearce did best in 2000 (42.31%) but he technically was not in his first year; Terry Lamb won 9/26 = 34.62% in 2001.

- 13th season for # wins (8) and win % (33.33%).

- 11th maximum winning streak (2 wins in a row, equal with 2002, 2006, 2008, 2013). Believe it or not, 2003, the worst, we never managed back-to-back wins. Best winning streak was 8 in 2005 and 2011.

- 9th maximum losing streak (maximum losing streak was 5, equal with 2001, 2009, 2012). Best years were 2006 and 2011 where we never lost more than 3 in a row.

- 11th average points scored per game (20.38; best 28.17 in 2005), 9th average points scored per win (29.88; best 34.71 in 2005), 6th points scored per loss (15.63; best 19.00 in 2005).

- 7th points conceded per game (23.33; best 17.92 in 2011), 2nd points conceded per win (12.25; best 11.00 in 2004), 5th points conceded per loss (28.88; best 22.44 in 2011).

- 9th for/against per game (-2.96; best 4.21 in 2005).

- 12th best single-game winning margin (34; best 52 in 2005 and 2008), 6th worst single-game losing margin (32; best 18 in 2011).

- 2nd average winning margin (17.62; best 19.50 in 2004), 4th average loss margin (13.25; best 10.75 in 2009).

- 15th end of year table position (15th, shared with 2015; best 3rd in 2010), 14th average table position (11.71; best 4.96 in 2010).

- 5th table peak (3rd in Rd 5; best 2nd in 2000, 2008, 2010, 2014), 15th table low (16th in Rd 17, shared with 2013; best 10th in 2000).

We won:

- 3/8 played on Fri (37.50%, all-time average is 37.04%)

- 1/6 played on Sat (16.67%, all-time average is 39.17%)

- 1/6 played on Sun (16.67%, all-time average is 50.93%)

- 3/4 played on Mon (75%, all-time average is 46.88%)

- 1/8 games with < 7 days turn-around (12.50%)

- 2/4 games with 7 days turn-around (50%)

- 5/12 games with > 7 days turn-around (41.67%)

- 0/10 (0%) games where we scored < 18.5 points, 8/14 (57.14%) where we scored > 18.5 points.

- 8/9 games (88.89%) where we conceded < 18.5 points, 0/15 (0%) where we conceded > 18.5 points.

With the NRL wanting a quicker and more free flowing game by reducing the interchange rule , the ad lib / razzle dazzle era will make a return !

Coming 9th or Last makes no difference to me.

Our season wasn't that difference to our last. JT had a lot less to work with than Mick Potter did but still got roughly the same result. It's a tough ask and I feel as though he is getting stuck right in and has the right attitude.

People talk about our attack… but remember.

We were up 24 - 6 against the Bulldogs and lost the Match.
We were up by 22 against the Raiders at Leichardt and lost the Match.
We had the Titans by 17 points at Leichardt and lost the Match.
We had the knights 16 - 6 at Campbelltown and lost the Match.

If we'd finished those games off we'd be in the finals. It really does demonstrate the importance of having a decent defense. Robbie played in most of those games as well

Also, great to see a decent chunk of our squad coming up to over 50/60 First grade matches of experience. I generally find that players go to the next level the season after they've played about 50 first grade matches.

These guys are now seasoned first graders all under the age of 25\. (Except maybe Taupau, who is still very young in Prop years). Another off season of training and conditioning and practice will see these guys start to reach their prime potential.

Also we had our usual soap opera/drama happening at the back end of the season that actually deflected a lot of media attention away from our very poor year.

We have a squad capable of beating any team on their day, but in reality they are incapable of putting more than two good games together in a row and nothing much will change next year. As for Taylor, I am not sure if he can get the job done but with our present roster even the great coaches would struggle. I am willing to give him half a season next year before I call for blood.

I am just tired of cheering for a team that continues to fail in the same areas every year. When the flashy stuff is on they can match it with the best, but when their required to play the grind, they are useless.

Anyway 2016 we will be writing all the same stuff

Talking Points - NRL Season 2015

With the Wests Tigers’ 2015 NRL season now complete, we take a look back at some of the main talking points from the year that was.

Club record broken
During the 2015 season, Head Coach Jason Taylor used a total of just 25 players. Previous to this, the least amount of players used during a Wests Tigers season was 26 in both the 2005 and 2007 seasons. The most players ever used in a season was back in 2001, with 35 players taking the field throughout that year. What makes this even more remarkable is that Lamar Liolevave and Josh Drinkwater played just the one NRL match each.

Three players play every game
James Tedesco, Mitchell Moses and Kevin Naiqama played in all 24 games for Wests Tigers this season. Tedesco and Moses played every minute of every Wests Tigers match, with Naiqama missing minor parts of the Raiders (Rd 22), Sea Eagles (R15) and Cowboys (R11) games.

Tedesco (City) and Naiqama (Fiji) also played during the Representative Round in May; while Naiqama also appeared in the NRL Auckland Nines tournament at the start of the season.

Nearly…. but not quite every game
Luke Brooks, Pat Richards, Sauaso Sue and Ava Seumanufagai only missed one match each all season, while Martin Taupau played every match bar his three-game suspension.

Taupau looked as though he would go on to play two seasons straight before his suspension in Round 20, having not missed an NRL game since joining the Club at the start of the 2014 season.

With Pat Richards and James Tedesco notching up 17 tries each, Wests Tigers were the only Club to have two players in the Top 10 try-scorers for the year.

Richards and Tedesco finished in third place behind Semi Radradra (24) and Curtis Rona (22).

While on statistics – both Luke Brooks and Pat Richards were among the best players in the competition in try-assists and line-breaks respectively.

Brooks finished fifth in total try-assists with a total of 16 – trailing Jonathan Thurston (28), Benji Marshall (22), James Maloney (19) and Daly Cherry-Evans (18).

Adding three line-breaks to his tally on Saturday night, Richards finished the season in fourth-place with 20\. Radradra (25), Rona (22) and Alex Johnston (21) finished in front of the veteran winger.

Young guns on the main stage
Despite only using 25 players this season, the Club blooded five players through to the NRL. Kyle Lovett, Delouise Hoeter, Lamar Liolevave, Nathan Milone and Manaia Cherrington all had their first taste of the top grade in 2015.

Lovett played 21 games this season, while Cherrington also featured prominently in the backend of the season with 11 matches.

The Club also welcomed new players in Kevin Naiqama and Josh Drinkwater.

Missed tackles:

Tigers missed 673/7965 = 8.45% of tackles. This places us 13th of all clubs. Storm were the best with 5.81%, Roosters were 6th with 6.83%, Titans were last with 10.44%. All-club average was 7.59%.

Individually, Tedesco missed the most tackles with 31/106 = 29.25%. He can, however, be somewhat excused because fullbacks are making covering / goal line tackles.

Apart from Tedesco, Milone missed 12/42 (28.57%), Brooks missed 75/338 (22.19%), Naiqama missed 54/259 (20.85%), Nofo missed 20/96 (20.83%), Moses missed 95/483 (19.67%).

Of the 25 players we used this year, the regular starting backline (Teddy, Nofo, Naiqama, Simona, Richards, Moses, Brooks) missed 318 or 47.25% of all our tackles. That is 7/25 = 28% of players accounting for almost half our missed tackles.

On the other hand, Ava missed only 11/443 (2.48%), Lovett 21/663 (3.17%), Buchanan 8/233 (3.43%), Farah 25/697 (3.59%), Woods 25/599 (4.17%).

Robbie Farah had the highest average 41.00 tackles per game, next closest was Lovett with 31.57, Woods with 29.95, Taupau with 27.29, Sue with 27.26.

This means 1 in every 5 times our backs lean into a tackle, they do not stick.

Moses made 43% more tackles than Brooks and ranked 8th in total tackles, 11th in tackles per game. Of players to play > 1 match, Moses made the most tackles of any backline player both in total and per game.

Moses (N=24) made more tackles all season than Siro (N=19), Ava (N=23), Lawrence (N=19).

Between 2005-2014, only 6 teams made the Top 8 with a negative F/A. This year two teams made it (Sharks -7, Rabbits -2); the last time two teams with negative F/A made the finals was 2005\. The last time any single team with negative F/A made the finals was 2009.

Minor Premiers

2015 not only marks the 3rd-consecutive year Roosters have won the MP, but since 2005 they had not been MPs until this run.

Since 2005, only 5 sides have been MPs (11 seasons) - Melbourne (4), Roosters (3), Dragons (2), Dogs (1), Parra (1).

Wooden spoon
Since 2005, this is only the second season where the wooden spoon earned 20 table points. The average is 15 points. The wooden spooners also had the 2nd best ever F/A in this same period (-6.42 points per game; 2007 was -2.83).

Newcastle have joined Parramatta on 2 wooden spoons each since 2005\. 7 other sides have managed the spoon in this period (Dogs, Cronulla, Melbourne, Penrith, Souths, Titans, Roosters). This means less than half the competition (7/16) has avoided the wooden spoon since 2005, which includes Tigers.

This accounts for the two seasons Melbourne and Dogs were stripped of points, where Cowboys twice avoided the spoon by this default.

Overall performance since 2005, regular season
Since 2005, Melbourne are the best-performed regular season team. They are ranked first in all assessed categories: first for win percentage (179/264 = 67.80%), first for points scored per game (23.27, average = 19.18), first for points conceded per game (15.10, average = 19.18), total table points (370, average = 272.13), average table position (4.09, average = 8.41).

These stats include the table points deducted for 2010 salary cap penalties, but not the results of those games.

In the same period, Tigers are 9th for win percentage (124/264 = 46.97%; Eels and Sharks are equal worst with 42.42%), 7th for points scored per game (21.39; Sharks are worst with 21.28), 15th for points conceded per game (23.14; Raiders are worst with 24.04), 9th for average table position (9.36; Raiders are worst with 10.91).

Since 2005, Tigers best regular-season position is 3rd (2010). In the same period, Warriors, Knights and Raiders have never finished this high; Cowboys, Titans and Sharks have never done better. All other 9 teams have managed to finish 2nd or above in one season.
